Diana Gitesha Hernandez, Gitesha, (aka HER or DGH) is a poet, musician, and multidisciplinary artist deeply rooted in the East Village arts scene. An explorer of the fusion between poetry and jazz, she blends lyrical storytelling with standards from the great American Songbook and improvisational music, creating performances that captivate and inspire. She hosts regular jazz jams as Diva Dive and curates poetry readings through the Artemis Poetry Collective. Also a painter, printmaker, and ceramicist, Gitesha’s artistry spans multiple forms, reflecting her passion for creativity, and community connection.

DJ Scenick Roots returns to The Kite alongside his brother DJ Sakadachi for the second installment of “Hemoglobin &amp; Oxygen Y’all” an event where the duo play a combination of songs they grew up listening to together and surprising each other with what they have in their libraries ranging from hip-hop, afrobeats, house, dancehall, funk, and R&amp;B. Dance the night away with them. NO REQUESTS, just breathe and vibe. Originally from Rochester, NY, DJ Scenick Roots has been spinning in NYC since 2020 at various rooftop parties, bars, and private events. He’s a dancer/choreographer first and approaches scoring his performances to sound like a DJ set. His seamless transitions between genres will not only have you dancing all night, but open your mind to ways of grooving. He has even played at venues such as Sleepwalk accompanied by his dance company, The Pocket Fuel Groovers tearing up the stage. Sakadachi is a dynamic DJ, music producer, and dancer known for blending diverse musical styles into unforgettable experiences. With a deep passion for rhythm and movement, he seamlessly fuses genres, creating unique soundscapes that ignite dance floors. His broad musical taste and background in dance bring a distinctive energy to his sets, connecting with audiences on a visceral level. Sakadachi’s artistry transcends boundaries, making him a versatile performer who inspires creativity and movement in every beat. He started DJing in NYC in 2021.

Come to Mama! <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.facebook.com/DirtyMotherStringBand">The Dirty Mother String Band</a> is a fine group of musicians who met at jam sessions around Brooklyn. They discovered their shared love of bawdy early blues, jazz, and string band music. Liz Rabson (Uke, Harmonica) is the daughter of acclaimed blues woman Ann Rabson, from Virginia but has lived in Brooklyn for twenty-seven years. She is a multi-instrumentalist, these days primarily playing the ukulele. She performs with various local bands, co-organizes the Brooklyn Ukes jam and teaches ukulele at the Jalopy Theatre School of Music. She is the music organizer at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club Boathouse and is active in the Brooklyn folk and roots music scene. Sarah Gancher (Fiddle) is a playwright and fiddle player who grew up playing early jazz in Oakland, California. Sarah Klein (Upright Bass) is an avid knitter, aspiring gardener, and upright bass player. Originally from Florida, she's currently based in Brooklyn, where she hopes to one day find a parking spot. Alex Deane (Guitar) originally hails from Nashville where she developed a love for acoustic music and singing with dear friends. You can find her singing and playing guitar or fiddle at jams and living rooms around Brooklyn.

Join us for an evening of acoustic music featuring East Coast-based songwriters Nick Prato (Boston, MA), Nora Meier (Boston, MA), and Ellie MacPhee (Brooklyn, NY). These artists will perform stripped-down arrangements of their original songs, blending indie folk and Americana with their own unique styles. A verbal processor and big reader, Nora is always writing. Devra Hoff plays music from her upcoming debut record for Switch Hit Records, Solve/Coagula, featuring Teeny Lieberson and Nicole Patrick. With a special musical set by the profound and hilarious actor/writer/comedian River Ramirez, the evening is going to be special!&nbsp;Devra (she/they) is a bassist and composer who’s spent most of her career as a collaborator, performing and recording with a wide range of bands and artists, primarily in left of center indie and jazz realms, including Cibo Matto, Yoko Ono, Nels Cline, Idris Ackamoor, Marc Ribot, Faye Carol, Mike Watt. She has toured extensively internationally for decades, performing at many major pop and jazz festivals such as Glastonbury, Primavera (Madrid, Barcelona, Porto), Lollapalooza, Newport Jazz, Saalfalden Jazz, Berlin Jazz, Summer Sonic (Tokyo), Corona Capital (DF, Mexico), etc., and has recorded on well over 100 releases. In recent years she has been primarily collaborating creatively with Sharon Van Etten, Julia Holter, and the punk/jazz project Mendoza*Hoff*Revels, which she co-leads with Ava Mendoza. Devra’s first solo record, Solo Bass (2008), was named by avant-pop icon Laurie Anderson as one of her top 5 favorite records of all time. In 2021 Kill Rock Stars released Voices From the Empty Moor, an acoustic bass-anchored exploration of the work of folk artist Anne Briggs. Bird Call's The Life is Extraordinary EP is a collection of Chiara Angelicola’s most masterful songwriting and production written under the influence of isolation during Covid-19 and the artist’s experience through postpartum depression after giving birth to her daughter. The Life is Extraordinary EP is the second record self-produced by Angelicola following Year of the Dogfish LP (2019) and was recorded and mixed by long-time collaborator Gabriel Galvin (Rain Machine, Erin Durant). Mastered by Amy Dragon at Telegraph Mastering. The EP features performances by Angelicola on piano, synths, wurlitzer, and vocals, Jeremy Gustin on drums/percussion, Scott Colberg (Calexico) on bass, Kirk Shoenherr (Tegan &amp; Sarah, Chet Faker) on guitar, Dave Smoota (TV on the Radio) on trombone, and Fred Lyenn Jacques (Mark Lanegan, Lyenn) on bouzouki and synths. Nicomo will open the evening with a quartet set. For nearly two decades, Bird Call, the nom de plume of Guatemalan/Italian art pop artist Chiara Angelicola, has garnered loyal ears from avante-music fans and critics like NPR, The Guardian, and Nylon. Born and raised in Mill Valley, CA, Chiara received her vocal and jazz piano training from her mother during her youth and began her musical career singing, songwriting, and playing keyboards during her undergraduate studies in Santa Cruz. After recording and self-releasing four records, Angelicola signed to British label Zap Records and released Will We Get to Mars? in 2013 produced by Bryan Senti (Mark Ronson, Rufus Wainwright, Feist), gaining recognition from underground music lovers and prominent music critics like Under the Radar who stamped Bird Call’s sound as "dangerous and romantic, emoting over a bed of cinema-worthy synths." Angelicola has gone on to share the stage with artists such as Angel Olsen, Empress Of, Majical Cloudz, Rain Machine, Cassandra Jenkins, and many others. Come celebrate the holidays and the release of Nuclear Family Fantasy's new Christmas tune, Thank God It's Them! With performances by Stu Spasm and City Ice, the event will also include a mini pop up gift shop featuring goods made by artists: wall hangings by Cheyenne Timperio, ceramics by Sarah Leber, ornaments by Carri Skocze, and sculptures by Stu Spasm. 15% of all ticket sales will be donated to NY Cares. Growing up in the projects of the Lower East Side of New York City, Matt Devin Patrick was fascinated by the relationship of creativity and the streets. But after his first band signed a contract with David Geffen, he took a detour into a life of crime, homelessness, and addiction. In 2023 after putting his life back together he would mine his experiences into songs and enlist childhood friends Tom Kotik and Drew Oakley to form post punk indie trio, City Ice. Nuclear Family Fantasy's singer/songwriter Mossy Ross belts out tunes criticizing the American Dream, and the suffering that trying to achieve it can cause. Their songs convey the struggles with addiction and mental health that often result from believing in the "If you work hard in America, you can achieve anything" rhetoric. Just in time for the fortieth anniversary of its release, NFF's new Christmas tune, Thank God It's Them, is a searing criticism of the controversial Band Aid song, Do They Know It's Christmas? Stu Art Gray, a.k.a. Stu Spasm, is a well known musician, artist, and writer; and the subject of the documentary, "I Should Have Been Dead Years Ago," currently screening in film festivals worldwide. Stu's former band Lubricated Goat were infamous in Australia for a naked TV performance in 1988 which left nothing to the imagination. He currently has two main bands, the Unthinkable and the Art Gray Noizz Quintet. He will be performing this show solo, fully clad.

Swing Night

If Wonderful Christmastime is grating on your last nerve, join <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://www.brittainashford.com/">Brittain Ashford</a>, her band, and special guests to marinate in and reflect on the season. There will be cookies! While Brittain Ashford has spent much of her career recording and touring in support of her original music, her unlikely appearance in the Broadway musical The Great Comet of 1812 took her a slightly different direction. Lin-Manuel Miranda once suggested that she could sing while he wept into a bucket, and The New York Times said she should have been nominated for a Tony. Since her time on Broadway she has returned to writing and performing. She’s released two albums under the moniker Prairie Empire, a solo album of show tunes “run through a David Lynch filter” called Drama Club, and numerous singles. Her new album, Trotter, has been heralded by indie press as, “beguilingly rich”, "Profoundly moving…” and “captivating”. Her music has been featured on MTV’s Catfished and HBO’s Search Party.

Contributors&nbsp;Hrannar Björnsson,&nbsp;Stephanie Skaff,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Celine Ipek&nbsp;will briefly read from the issue. McSweeney's Publisher Amanda Uhle,&nbsp;Quarterly&nbsp;editor Rita Bullwinkel, and longtime McSweeney's collaborator James Yeh will all be present to raise a glass to this issue's remarkable debut fiction writers. Hrannar Björnsson is a writer and comedian from Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. He writes and performs comedy with his group, Tiny Idea, and he has an MFA in Writing from Sarah Lawrence College. Stephanie Skaff is a multi-disciplinary artist. She's made performances and public art projects. In 2015, she earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Hunter College. She lives in Brooklyn with her partner, their son, and a spotted dog. Celine Ipek is an MFA candidate in fiction at Columbia University, where she received the Felipe De Alba Fellowship. She lives in Brooklyn.

Radical Book Buzz 

Celebrate the upcoming release by Hat &amp; Beard Press of I Feel Famous: Punk Diaries 1977-1981&nbsp;by Angela Jaeger. There will be a short audiovisual presentation by Angela, followed by a book signing. Drawn from her actual diaries as a teenage music enthusiast living in New York’s East Village, Angela’s story unfolds chronologically, charting her late adolescence in tandem with her transition from observer of the nascent punk scene to eager participant. Gradually becoming a nightly fixture of her neighborhood’s vibrant underground rock milieu at CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, by 1978 she had continued to fulfill her punk fantasy abroad. She followed the Clash on a tour across England, finally returning home in 1979 to start her own band. The diary entries are illustrated with the visual expressions of Angela’s enthusiasm — her drawings of punk personalities and fans, previously unseen photos, and ephemera culled from her personal archive.&nbsp; Angela Jaeger is a singer, writer, and teacher who founded the late 70's No Wave band the Stare Kits and has recorded with Pigbag, Bush Tetras, Trevor Horn, David Cunningham, and The Monochrome Set, amongst others. A born and bred New Yorker who has lived in Barcelona and London, she currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Angela Jaeger’s I Feel Famous: Punk Diaries New York-London 1977-1981

Three very different authors, all published by Eponymous Books. Linh Luu, JC Hopkins, and Arthur Nersesian describe their works and process in this panel discussion: Luu's The Napper, (Thuy Nguyen is your typical spoiled rich international student in her freshman year of college, except she is depressed and cannot stop taking naps to escape from the flashbacks of her emotionally traumatic childhood.) Hopkins' I was a Teenage Communist, (The story involves a group of diverse, non-conformist teenagers in high school during the early 1980’s.) and Nersesian's Shit Show (A mystery that originates in Moscow during World War II and is solved on the 93rd floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center, half a century later, before the towers come tumbling down.) Come join us — Q &amp; A and book signing afterwards!

The Eponymous Writers Panel 

A 4 Horn, 2 Guitars, Bass, and Drums band led by <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://dtreut.com/">D.Treut</a> singing from behind keys/drums/sax. Drawn from bands like Sun Ra, Count Basie, and Chicago and inspired by NYC’s downtown jazz scene, the influence of a big horn afrobeat revitalization, with the mysticism of Dr. John and Moon Dog to make a large band feel like a group improvisation. Highlighting Treut's skill as a multi-instrumentalist he wrangles his crew to get a ‘train nearly off the tracks’ large band sound. The band’s familiarity with Treut’s musical sensibilities come from their shared time in avant garde circles. &nbsp; D. Treut's music is defined by unconventionality — he has explored the jazz improvisational, rock, and pop realms with equal vigor, extracting from each to create something original and undefinable. Classifying D. Treut's style as 'outsider music' is somewhat undervaluing, given the complex, intelligent musicality of the work. Yet, the moniker captures the non-conformist spirit of the music. The music is high-concept – almost too conceptual for the casual listener, the music is defined by incongruity; D. Treut reveals an almost Harry Nilsson-esque pop sensibility, providing the listener with an uncommon accessibility (a departure for D. Treut who prefers to exist in the abstract). The listener is left with a surprising but gratifying experience. D. Treut, known for his experimental/jazz stylings, isn't pulling out all the stops here; only the relevant ones.

<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.instagram.com/laura__loriga/">Laura Loriga</a> (organ, voice) will open the night with a solo set, followed by Anni Rossi (viola, electric viola, voice) and duo <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.instagram.com/day.so.far/">Day So Far</a> (voice, violin, keys, synths, drum machines).&nbsp;Laura Loriga is a songwriter and pianist from Italy, who in the last ten years has developed her work between London and New York. Her writing is based on piano, organ and voice, and it is often enriched by other electric and acoustic elements. The result is a series of darker and variegated compositions, close to folk and classical tradition as well as to experimentation. Last year, Laura released Vever, her fourth record and the first one in her name, written in New York between 2018 and 2020 (God Unknown Records/Ears &amp; Eyes Records), which features among others the collaboration of Josh Werner, Otto Hauser, Anni Rossi and Janis Brenner. Besides her own work, Laura has collaborated with various other artists, including band Giardini di Mirò and songwriters Jaye Bartell and Grimm Grimm. In recent years, she has also contributed to the writing of a number of soundtracks for film, including Shelter, Farewell to Heaven, Lucus a Lucendo: About Carlo Levi (Caucasus Factory) and Mindcage (Lionsgate).A classically trained viola player and multi-instrumentalist, Anni Rossi launched a songwriting career in her early twenties, drawing comparisons to and other equally anachronistic musicians. Using the viola to guide her way through folk-classical-pop songs like "Wheelpusher," not to mention her unique Internet-based take on ‘Radioheads "Creep," Rossi built up a small following in 2007. After "Wheelpusher" was featured as Single of the Month by the indie label Too Pure in January 2008, Rossi spent the first part of the year touring the British Isles and inked a contract with the longstanding British label 4AD. She then retired to an Illinois studio with producer Steve Albini; the resulting debut album, Rockwell, was recorded in one inspired day and released in March 2009. After parting ways with her label, Rossi recorded her second album, Heavy Meadow, and released it in mid-2010.Day So Far is the darkwave duo of Sarah Bernstein (voice+violin+keys) and Stuart Popejoy (synths+drum machines), making dreamy electronic music with sharp, melancholic lyrics and soaring melodic hooks.

Laura Loriga + Anni Rossi + Day So Far

Jonathan Scott has been tinkering with lo-fi recording since the 80's (heck, most likely even longer than that!) in the guise of BUTTERSCOTT! Around, 1993, he purchased the cheapest of cheap Tascam 4-track cassette recorders, a Radio Shack microphone and he was off to the races; banging out C-90 (that 90 minute tape folks) after C-90 of no-budget, lo-yo tech Archies/Monkees/Beach Boys-esque bubble-gummy power pop toppers! He then proceeded to circulate said tapes to record emporia all over the land (or at least quite a bit on his home turf of the Boston area), but notably at least one legendary NY STORE (MIDNIGHT RECORDS) sold the tapes in their regular mail order catalogues, so 60's bubblerock nerdos from say Germany or the Netherlands could get their aural fix of this precious chocobliss! Many of these tapes featured, in addition to Mr. Scott's unique one-man'bandiness, a veritable cornucopia of guest musos, including members of a least a few rock acts you may/may not have heard of (Six Finger Satellite, Princess Superstar, Nisi Period, The Barnies, etc...). These early days saw a BUTTERSCOTT tape land in the hands of notorious LA meanster scenester KIM FOWLEY (i.e. JOAN JETT &amp; CO THE RUNAWAYS). Mr. F then proceeded to lay BUTTERSCOTT on anyone with ears to hear — among said ears was one MR. JOE FOSTER out of the U former CREATION RECORDS (i.e., OASIS) honcho &amp; present curator of the wonderous REV-OLA label. REV-OLA eventually released a "greatest hits" compilation BUTTERSCOTT cd of remastered 4-track biz entitled THROWING MEATLOAF AT THE SUN which drew critical plaudits (4 stars even!) from that zine of zines, UK's MOJO! Once a hard-to-find pricey import cd, you can now find copies online for under $5 (well, that's showbiz)! Anyroad, live appearances by BUTTERSCOTT these days are a very rare, precious, and beautiful — as Mr. Scott sez, "I AM BUBBLEGUM MAN CHEW MY BUBBLEGUM IF YOU CAN" and you should 'cuz it's doublebubbledeliciousandgoot! Some of you may be familiar with Owen because he makes movies (be sure to check how his big time feature length motion picture, FUNNY PAGES) and acts in 'em too (check out A DIFFERENT MAN). However, Owen is one of the finest curators of moldy old timey vinyl records — most likely bringing wayyyy more than he needs for a single dj set! That said, he's ready to skeedaddle&nbsp;ya doo down any shoop rockin' doo daa doo! Oh, also Owen has been a live member of BUTTERSCOTT beatin' the traps from time to time (although, not this time around)! Kathy Snax is the solo project of Kathleen Mahoney, a Boston-based musician who describes her music as “haunted electropop.” The dreaminess of her ethereal vocals and lushly textured synths are juxtaposed with spacey tape feedback and moments of eerie distortion and noise, infusing her pop melodies with the surreal.

The genesis of "Can I Get An Amen?" begins with the track "Amen, Brother" by '60s soul band The Winstons, tracing the transformation of the song's drum solo in its original context as part of a B-side vinyl single into its use as a key aural ingredient in contemporary musical expression. The work scrutinizes the techno-utopian notion that "information wants to be free," questioning sample culture’s efficacy as a democratizing agent. This as well as other issues are foregrounded through a history of the Amen Break and its peculiar relationship to copyright law. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nkhstudio.com/amen">Nate Harrison </a>works at the intersection of intellectual property law and cultural production. He has exhibited and lectured at institutions including the American Museum of Natural History, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Haus der Kultur der Welt, Berlin. Nate earned a BFA from the University of Michigan, an MFA from California Institute of the Arts, and a PhD from the University of California, San Diego. Nate serves as Dean of Academic Affairs at SMFA at Tufts University. &nbsp; Textual Records is a label dedicated to the distribution of sound, music, and text by contemporary artists. As a form of publication, the label focuses on the simultaneity of inscription — the textual, sonic, and musical markings created within the context of art. Dictate a postcard to the newly elected president with Sheryl Oring, the artist who uses a manual typewriter to give Americans an unfiltered way to share their hopes and concerns through her “I Wish to Say” project. Oring has traveled the country listening to stories for the last 20 years dressed as a 1960s secretary. She’ll be transforming The Kite into her impromptu office, offering attendees a channel to voice their hopes, fears, and expectations for the nation's future and have their words materialize on postcards through the keys of a vintage typewriter. A copy of all postcards will be sent to The White House. Come speak your mind! Since launching her "I Wish to Say" project in 2004, Sheryl Oring has typed thousands of postcards to the last four U.S. presidents. Her work has been featured at universities, museums, and public spaces nationwide, including Bryant Park (NY), the National Cathedral (DC), and the San Diego Museum of Art. Oring has received grants from Creative Capital, Franklin Furnace, and the NY Foundation for the Arts, among others, and is the first artist on the National Coalition Against Censorship's Board of Directors.

The Flushing Remonstrance are the duo of Catherine Cramer (percussion, electronics) and Robert Kennedy (keyboards, electronics), and are NYC’s premier group devoted to live film accompaniment.

The Films of Kenneth Anger 

This event brings together experimental musicians and visual artists based in New York City to create a unique tapestry of sound and image. Each artist's unique perspective will be woven into the event, creating a multi-layered experience that evolves with the number of audiences. The boundaries between performer and experiencer will blur, making this a true experiential event. Nestled in the embrace of Togakushiyama and Iiyama, twin spiritual peaks rising 1200 meters above sea level and steeped in Japan's spiritual heritage, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.thefactorsmusic.com/jody-tenku">Jody Tenku</a>&nbsp;was nurtured by the raw beauty of nature. Testu creates intermedia performances, experimental videos, concept soundtracks, audiovisual experiences, sound art, and performance art installations. Tesene and Stucke are interested in creating environments that challenge the traditional audience experience. This documentary is based on a&nbsp;Lux&nbsp;feature from Issue 6, and we’re thrilled to be premiering this short here in New York. Editor, organizer and Alabamian Cheryl Rivera will be joined by Labik and Robin Kaiser-Schatzlein, author of the&nbsp;Lux&nbsp;article, in conversation about the film, Bama, and mutual aid. This event is free and open to the public!Lux&nbsp;is a feminist magazine of politics and culture founded in 2021. We publish a glossy print edition three times a year featuring our award-winning writers, and a regular newsletter. Our coverage runs from in-depth political reporting — on underground abortion networks, for example, or on abolitionists’ 911 alternatives — to reviews of the latest batch of bisexual novels and reports on feminist politics from Afghanistan to Mexico.

8 Ball Radio Presents makes its debut at The Kite, featuring three emerging acts from different corners of NYC's underground music communities. 8 Ball Radio is a volunteer-run, public-access online radio station based in Chinatown. Focused on community-oriented programming, the station places an emphasis on creative freedom and collaboration without hierarchical structures. It serves as a part of the 8 Ball Community, a nonprofit collective that also engages in other cultural projects. DORIS is the musical alter ego of visual artist Frank Dorrey, known for his playful and surrealist creations. As DORIS, he distorts and pitches sampled vignettes to craft mischievous, fun house-like vignettes that paint a vivid, often dreamlike, textural soundscape. Drawing on an array of influences from underground music, DORIS' sound is a fresh take on contemporary production, blending elements of hip-hop, electronic, and ambient music into a unique, genre-defying experience. Blake Christopher is a Southern artist known for his innovative approach to production and deep, introspective lyricism. His signature sound seamlessly fuses hip-hop with the emotive tones of his soul influences, springing forth a fresh take on contemporary rap. Fundraising Happy Hour for Catskills Agrarian Alliance

Trixie Whitley is ready to listen to her heartbeat — whether it aches for the state of the world, calls out for her child, or just syncs with her sticks on the drumkit. A musician whose life has been a tapestry of melody, dance, and self-expression, Whitley’s new era is all about digging into the “primal,” infusing her songs with all the joys, sorrow, and intricacies of motherhood — and life itself. “I felt such a deep maternal instinct at a very young age,” she says. “I want to embrace all of the complexities of being a mother and finding my way in an industry that doesn’t embrace motherhood at all.” That all comes to glorious fruition on her new EP, Dragon of Everything which touches on everything from maternal love to loss of bodily autonomy. It was named, quite aptly, after an illustration by her daughter that also graces the cover of the record. “I need to listen to my womb — my gut,” she says. That’s a big part of these recordings.” A life-long musician who has been drumming since she was 10, Whitley struck out on her own after touring with Daniel Lanlois and Black Dub in 2013. She’s since released three EPs and LPs, toured the world, and collaborated with the likes of Robert Plant, Marianne Faithful, and Meshell Ndegeocello. Dragon of Everything marks a shift from Whitley’s last release, 2019’s Lacuna, which was a nod to her “rave kid” past. “I've always had a deep, deep love for heavy rhythm music and dance music,” she says. “Electronic sounds and very organic, primal sounds.” This time, though, she wanted to go all organic.&nbsp;

Three trans women and their all-girl bands perform across genres in an evening of powerful songs. Mya Byrne lands squarely in the nebulous descriptor of Americana, often compared to Lucinda Williams and the Band by way of Nick Drake, and featured this past year in Rolling Stone, No Depression, and All Things Considered for her joyful and inspiring country debut, “Rhinestone Tomboy”. Swan Real is lead composer for the 99% Invisible podcast, and writes quirky power-pop at its finest, hardest, and most delicate, like Modest Mouse meets Courtney Barnett. Nedezuga is a musical polyglot, an in-demand arranger and session artist with insightful and achingly raw songs that pull as much for the Stanley Brothers as they do from Slayer. This show is a sneak preview of her upcoming album.

You can dance how you want and dress how you want — you bring yourself, and we’ll bring the music. This all started in a small Alphabet City studio (hence the origin of the name), but that “be a little weird because you’re around your friends” ethos still stands. The 18th edition is hosted at The Kite for “Your Worst Halloween Costume”. That cat costume that you’ve worn every year for the last five halloweens? Wear that. The hyper realistic zombie costume you wore that one year that made you realize no one wears scary halloween costumes any more? Yes. No costume? PERFECT. No costume IS a terrible costume. Vibes will be “I’m finally done with Halloween”, so come, have a drink, dance to some house music, and meet some cool people. Former horse girl turned finance bro turned music industry wannabe (yeah, she’s one of our co-founders too), Kristen London will be in that trusted opening slot with some sultry grooves and even funkier basslines. Vibes will be jazzy, soulful house music with a few surprises thrown in (who listens to the opener anyways). After her set, she’ll be the one on the dancefloor doing the sprinkler. Say hi to her. She needs friends. Jason Orrell aka jOrrell&nbsp;is a Brooklyn-based musician, DJ, and yoga teacher. His exposure to raves and the NYC club scene in the early 2000s ignited his life-long passion for house music. After attending art school, he DJed for the Local Project Art Space at the infamous 5 Pointz in LIC. He spent the 2010s teaching movement and producing music, and in 2024 joined Multiple Expressions, a music collective focused on bringing expressive sounds to venues throughout NYC. Szobi&nbsp;got into the dance scene with breakbeat parties in his hometown Budapest, Hungary in the late 2000's. It quickly became clear that dancefloors are his happy place — his goal is to create this for others when he’s on the decks. After moving to NYC, he jumped into the local dance scene, with emphasis on anything with some thick synths. He started Dancing in Socks in his studio apartment to bring friends together and create a space to perform.

The event belongs to a tradition that extends far back in time and across continents, forward to pioneering parties like Basement Bhangra, and to contemporary events like Papi Juice, Discostan, and others. Bollyween is Disco Auntie’s annual Halloween party.&nbsp; offering rain is one of Disco Auntie’s co-founders and resident DJs. Born and bred in the heart of New York City and with roots stretching across continents, offering rain draws from their diverse background to craft vibrant, poly-cultural soundscapes. NIMBU is a Brooklyn-based producer, rapper, singer-songwriter, and DJ. Featured by Rolling Stone, Live Nation’s One to Watch, Apple Music and UMG, NIMBU’s refreshing sound fuses together dance, alternative hip-hop and classic Bollywood. Hasan Khalid is a conceptual artist, creative director, and DJ based between Brooklyn and the Mediterranean Sea. Their work exists at the intersections of visual and auditory mediums to access liminal spaces of post-human existence — magical, surrealist, and imperceptibly sensual. Their sets often consist of 80s New Wave, Rare Italo, Bossa Nova, and Chicago house, spun between the warm, fragrant sounds of the SWANA region. As a leader, she has released eight albums: most recently, Alula: Captivity (2023), and Portals, Vol.2: Returning. Her active projects include jazz-leaning Portals, experimental R&amp;B My Tree, and protest band Alula. Some of her compositional practice integrates music with cognitive science, influenced by her Ph.D in Music Cognition. Davis&nbsp;is an advocate for social justice in the realms of gender (This Is a Movement) and in the movement for carceral justice (Justice for Keith Lamar). Alex Tatarsky makes performances in the uncomfortable zone between comedy, dance, theater, and performance art — sometimes with songs. Original shows include Sad Boys in Harpy Land, MATERIAL, Dirt Trip, and Americana Psychobabble. Current research obsessions include compost, ghosts, and Renn Fayres. Stemlines&nbsp;(She/They) is the endless quest of Nnenna Udumah to explore the limitless world of music with a focus on electronic production and performance. Her music is marked by hypnotic drums, melodic R&amp;B-inspired vocals, and expansive storytelling that allows her to elude the confines of genre. Through her music, she investigates the vast emotional landscape of human existence while feeding her insatiable desire for experimentation and discovery. Tilghman Alexander Goldsborough is a poet who writes texts and makes other text-based objects and projects. His books include The Western (1080 Press, 2023) and Object 7 ( ,a spirit loosely, ,bundled in a frame, ) (Futurepoem, 2024). He stays in Brooklyn, NY.&nbsp; A Motor City born and raised educator and artist. Most Turnt Nerd is a producer, author, poet, saxophonist, professor, director, and storyteller. In 2018, upon graduating from the University of Michigan, he independently published a book of poetry titled, 6 Mile Negus on the Honor Roll at Michigan. In 2022, upon graduating from Harvard University and taking class at MIT, he released music under the moniker Most Turnt Nerd. Gordon went from a felonious inmate in a county jail to a Masters’ candidate at the top institution in the world in the matter of five years. He created the Most Turnt Nerd to tell his story in a way that would galvanize other youngsters who face opposition from the police and still desire to use their minds to elevate their lives.

Molly's work has been nominated for a National Book Award and three Emmys, and she has made animations with AOC and Jay Z. Her artwork is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Most recently, she was a 2024 Cullman Center fellow at the New York Public Library, where was working on her third book, a history of the Jewish Labor Bund.

Kamra’s debut album Shift Circuit is a contemporary take on the Chitlin' Circuit for and by Black musicians from the 1930s through the 1960s. On the album Kamra sings a gossamer-like version of the kind of gutter blues that would make any listener blush. Come out for an evening full of music — with supporting sets by sandile (solo), Amelia Murray (full band), and Yaz Lancaster. In June of 2022, a queer, nonbinary Zimbabwean multidisciplinary artist <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.instagram.com/africanarchy/">sandile</a> performed their first ever solo show. A true Pisces Venus, their songbook was a diaristic and dramatic saga of their experiences navigating love, friendship, family, and fantasy. And those songs, whose first breaths were whisper-sung in fleeting moments of inspiration, delivered in dreams to the artist as they slept on a creaky twin bed in their first apartment, written to stay close to the heart, finally transformed. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.instagram.com/performanceenhancingdrug/">Kamra</a> is a singer-songwriter living between their farm in the Western Catskill Mountains and Toronto. Their music fuses string instruments, experimental sensibilities, field recordings, and band jams. Kamra’s practice centers collaboration, painterly storytelling, and transfigurations that emerge after a spiritual experience. Channeling the legacy of Black femme folk singers, Kamra puts their twist on the genre by blending the sentimental deep rich tones with soaring falsettos floating listeners off their feet. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.instagram.com/amelia_murray/">Amelia Murray</a> is a singer and songwriter, based in Brooklyn, NY. Join X Artists’ Books and Francis Kite Club for an afternoon of conversation and oracle reading exploring the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.xartistsbooks.com/books/itineraires-fantomes-oracle-deck">Itinéraires Fantômes</a> oracle deck! The Itinéraires Fantômes oracle deck was created by Alexandra Grant with Hélène Cixous in celebration of Hélène’s work. The images on the cards come from family, friends, and artists who have been inspired by and inspired Hélène’s writing. Grant will be joined by artist and curator Leonardo Bravo to have a conversation about the deck and Bravo's card, "Le Télégramme." Iman Richardson and Dannielle Tegeder, New York-based artists and diviners, will read guests' cards using the Itinéraires Fantômes deck free of charge. Itinéraires Fantômes oracle decks will be available for purchase at the event ($75). Leonardo Bravo is an artist, educator, and curator. His work in the museum and non-profit arts field has exemplified building public and private partnerships that highlight the power of the arts to transform and catalyze vulnerable and underserved communities. Bravo is the Director, Public Engagement within the Learning and Engagement Department at MoMA where he oversees adult and artist related programs and is shaping a civic engagement strategy to work with communities throughout the New York region. He was also the founder and organizer of Big City Forum, an interdisciplinary, social practice and curatorial research project that brings attention to emergent practices across design, architecture, and the arts. Big City Forum provided an ongoing exploration of the intersections between these creative disciplines and new ways of knowledge making within the context of public space and social change. Bravo has been an adjunct professor with UCLA's Department of World Arts Cultures/Dance within the School of the Arts and Architecture, and has served on the board of CREATE CA advising on arts education policy that impact students throughout the state of California. He holds a Master in Fine Arts from University of Southern California, Los Angeles with a focus in Fine Arts and Critical Theory and a BFA from the Otis School of Art and Design, Los Angeles. Alexandra Grant is a Los Angeles– and Berlin–based visual artist whose work explores issues around communication across languages, literary traditions, and cultures. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries globally and she is represented by Miles McEnery Gallery in New York and carlier | gebauer in Berlin and Madrid. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions around the world. She’s also co-founder of independent publisher X Artists’ Books and the creator of the grantLOVE Project, which has raised funds for arts-based nonprofits. Grant received her Master of Fine Arts from the California College of Arts and Crafts and her Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College.

Itinéraires Fantômes

The event presents selections from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://www.zeeliebrownlovesyou.com/">Zeelie Brown</a>'s upcoming album which compiles three years of work, thinking about homelessness, trauma, and redemption. It mourns the loss of communal ways of life and farming in the Alabama small town where&nbsp;Zeelie&nbsp;comes from, while hopefully sounding a future of Black joy where no one has to war for their basic needs. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.patreon.com/zeeliebrownlovesyou">Zeelie Brown</a> is a jazz cellist and multimedia artist whose first art museum was the pine woods in Alabama and the limestone walls of San Antonio. Zeelie's work investigates the vernacular culture of the Black Gulf and Global South as a means of overcoming the legacies of genocidal white greed that threatens to drown our world.

Pablo Helguera's Beautiful Eccentrics is a weekly column exploring a range of topics around art, often from a historical or social perspective and often employing humor. This evening will be themed around the subject of art and politics during these divided times. We will perform Civil War-era music, read excerpts from past columns, have special guests, and hold a trivia game.

Pablo Helguera: The Carnival of the Political Animals

The quartet will perform original compositions by Wataru Uchida and Paul Sanwald, as well as modern jazz standards.&nbsp;Wataru Uchida on saxophone, Paul Sanwald on bass, Dov Manski on piano, and Renan Teuman on drums. NYC-based saxophonist Wataru Uchida studied with Chico Freeman and has jammed with Terence Conley of the Count Basie Orchestra, learning straight-ahead jazz. In 2009, Wataru&nbsp;performed with Bill Saxton. He led his quintet at the Museum of the City of New York for the 150th anniversary of Japan-U.S. trade and oon Best Original Film Scoring at Tisch School of the Arts in 2014. Wataru&nbsp;recorded four albums with artists, such as Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta, Abelita Mateus, Vanderlei Pereira, and Mark Whitfield Jr. Paul Sanwald is a New York-based bassist and composer. Paul started playing music professionally as a teenager, and has worked steadily for more than 25 years as a sideperson and leader. Paul currently plays in a variety of settings, including with the New Conductors Orchestra, Litha Orchestra, and Sanwald / Mizell / Brade, a trio. Paul has toured internationally and recorded with Dem Brooklyn Bums, Elizabeth and the Hot and Silver Trio, The Blue Saracens, Flipside Phonics, and The Fatmouth Quartet. Dov Manski is a pianist, composer, and electronic musician who has performed and recorded extensively over the past 20 years. Manski has shared the stage with many notable musicians including George Garzone, Cecil McBee, Shahzad Ismaily, Kendrick Scott, Thomas Morgan, Bob Moses, and many others. In 2021, he released his second album for Sunnyside Records, “The Hue of Silence” created in collaboration with painter Erin Parsch exploring the intersection between aural and visual arts. Dov currently resides in Brooklyn. Renan&nbsp;Teuman is an architect and drummer living in New York City since 2017, originally from Istanbul, Turkey. He has studied with renowned musicians Ferit Odman, Cem Aksel, Dave Allen, Mark Ferber, Greg Hutchinson, and Steven Crammer. He has been performing in various clubs across NYC.

They combine deep-space synthesizers and electronics with silver-surfing baritone guitars and cathartic drumming.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://vugmusic.bandcamp.com/track/addict">Vug Arakas</a> is a singer/songwriter based in New York City, slowly releasing his second album 'The Cost to Dream'. Originally from Columbus, OH, Vug spent 6 years of his life in Los Angeles, most of which were spent recording, working as a waiter at a bowling alley, and grieving his father's untimely death 'the wrong way'. Vug calls this album a screenplay put to music, though each song is a confession. But not without finding some light at the end of the tunnel, reaching for a bigger understanding and coming to terms with reality. Vug has been compared to Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, and Warren Zevon. The album was co-produced by Vug and Robbie Chemical in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at Gary's Electric with some of the best session musicians New York has to offer.

Ambient + Experimental Nite at The Kite is an occasional Sunday evening, a deep listening space curated by Jonathan Kaiser and Marshall LaCount. It looks for ambient, experimental, noise, and drone musics and their intersections with other genres. Ultimately it is a simple and chill community experience, and meditative way to check-in/start the week.&nbsp;&nbsp;Walt McClements is an accordionist and multi-instrumentalist based in Los Angeles. His compositions focus on processed accordion, creating patient and emotional meditations that nod to drone and ambient music. His latest record Rain on the Road, is a duo collaboration with the harpist Mary Lattimore. Shield Maiden is a songwriter from the Pacific Northwest who makes ethereal music from the emotional wells of being; whose reverb-soaked vocals and haunting melodies touch on the pain and beauty of being. sexdeathvoid is a Brooklyn-based experimental duo. Their improvisations are reflections of, and odes to, the city and its people. They recently released a nearly 10 hour long album "Cityscape in Full Relief."

British Mod hostess Lady Dawn and resident DJ Phast Phreddie The Boogaloo Omnibus are bringing their exciting dance party back to The &nbsp;Francis Kite Club. Our parties attract a diverse range of mods, soulies and dancers of all ages, and while there is no dress code, if you want to dress in 60s finery, you’ll be in good company!&nbsp; Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus is a club disc jockey originally from LA, who specializes in Modernist Vintage Astro Sounds: Soul Music, Go-Go, garage, mod, exotica, surf, twist, R&amp;B, organ grooves, mambo, ska, Doo Wop, jerk, rockabilly, and other assorted reet rhythms. He now lives in the Hudson Valley and he will be making a rare appearance in The City at this event. Lady Dawn moved from the UK’s vibrant 60s mod and Northern Soul dance scene in 2000 only to find no equivalent in New York City. She set about finding dance space with a wooden floor (a rare thing in an era when dancing was mostly illegal in New York) teaming up with vinyl record collectors and gathering fellow enthusiasts to help build a thriving 60s scene. As well as promoting and hosting, Lady Dawn is responsible for Subway Soul’s distinctive, pop art graphics.

Helen Gillet is a musician, composer, cellist, singer (Belgian French &amp; English), improviser and looping artist. Her prolific career has won her awards of Offbeat Best of the Beat, Gambit Big Easy Awards, featured artist at the New Orleans Jazz Museum and has been nominated three times, most recently in 2023, as a rising star in Downbeat Magazine's Critics Poll. She has played, recorded with many musicians over the past 20 years, including members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, AACM (Chicago), ICP (Holland), Members of Morphine, Kidd Jordan, Marianne Faithful, Cassandra Wilson, Delfeayo and Jason Marsalis, Steve Earle, Iron &amp; Wine (North America Tour 2018), Zachary Richard, opened up as a solo artist for Les Claypool at the Orpheum Theatre in New Orleans in 2003 and Jeff Tweedy at Lincoln Center in 2019. She has performed at a variety of festivals and venues worldwide including the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Dark MOFO Festival in Tasmania, Darwin World Music Festival, New Orleans Jazz Festival, New Direction Cello Society Festival at Berkeley College of Music, Kennedy Center and at The Big Ears Music Festival in 2024 and many more. Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archeologist exploring synthesized sounds, texture, and rhythm using an acoustic cello. For someone with her varied background, New Orleans, with its mix of cultures and music, seemed like a natural place to call home. Born in Belgium, and raised in Singapore from the ages of 2 to 11, Helen Gillet was routinely shuttled between the homelands of her Belgian father and American mother, planting the notion that a healthy ecosystem in life and art is one of immense variety. Over the years, working in New Orleans with musicians of all stripes, from avant-garde jazz and classical to pop and funk, Gillet has developed a singular polyglot style. The core of her work is solo performance with live looping, layering cello parts and vocal lines. Rhythmic figures emerge with bowed or plucked ostinatos or a variety of rubbing and slapping on the body of the cello, then enhanced with melodies played or sung in her haunting alto. Her mixed musical vocabulary is commensurate with her disparate travels — French chanson of the 1940s, Belgian folk tunes sung in Walloon, a mix of rock and punk from the likes of PJ Harvey and X-Ray Spex, and her own affecting originals, like audience favorite “Julien,” sung in a mix of French and English. Gillet’s solo performance is known for its enigmatic quality as she fabricates each song with innovative use of the cello and true mastery of live looping technology.

These are poems of longing and growing at once.” Marked For Death is a quartet featuring members of Super Yamba Band that performs adventurous original compositions that draw inspiration from an array of artists such as Yusef Lateef and Moondog to Slayer and the music of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. The group is led by saxophonist Walter Fancourt and supported by drummer Joseph Yount, bassist Seth Barden, and Guitarist Eric Burns. Grace MacNair is a poet living in Brooklyn, NY. A 2023 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Poetry, Grace's poems have appeared or are forthcoming in The Threepenny Review, Poetry Northwest, The Missouri Review, Frontier Poetry, Best New Poets, and elsewhere. Grace's micro-chapbook, Even As They Curse Us, is available from Bull City Press. Joseph Earl Thomas is the author of the memoir Sink, and the novel, God Bless You, Otis Spunkmeyer. Emily Lee Luan is the author of 回 / Return, a winner of the Nightboat Poetry Prize, and I Watch the Boughs, selected for a PSA Chapbook Fellowship. Electro-kraut digital hardcore supergroup, The Miz'ries: noise sheriff Quinn Collins plays broken records on a turntable with crazy effects, mad genius inventor Jeff Snyder plays his own analog synth creation whilst Neuseelander songstress Leila Adu sings and plays electronic drum pads. The Miz’ries have been described as "a noise band that plays 3-minute pop songs", and as "the music that plays in the club the bad guys hang out in". llama/lama is the mind-melting, genre-bending, tongue-in-cheek collaboration of composers Quinn Collins and Paul Schuette. Drawing sonic material from turntables, modular synthesizers, real (and false) radios, handmade mbiras, shopping malls, digital ephemera, and custom-built audio hardware, llama/lama plays prime numbers with prime numbers. They make high brow, low-fi noise music for all occasions, sharing bills with jug bands, puppet shows, math rock quartets, and new music ensembles in varied settings including public parks, basements, bars, art galleries, and contemporary music festivals.

Imagine Brett Anderson crooning over an NYC sax solo, with a funk attack rhythm section of the early 80s. Sweaty Rump Shakin' Punk Soul is a great way to describe the band, the combination of a James Brown styled soul review and sweaty punk rock show. “In this band, New York and New Orleans meet at the crossroads and no one moves an inch." - MyersFormed in Brooklyn during the pandemic, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://linktr.ee/tahitisyndrome">Tahiti Syndrome</a> is the musical collaboration between Simon Sun (guitar/vocals) and Dave Spinley (sax) forging a unique blend of a noise pop, no-wave, post punk, and psych rock sound that melts your face. Expanding their creative endeavors, in 2023 they shot their first short film, a black and white sci-fi crime noir entitled, ‘SWITCHOUT: a Silent Film for a Sonic Experience’ and composed a soundtrack that is written to be performed live on stage with each screening. They released ‘Tremble’, their first EP on all digital streaming platforms in July 2024 which was mixed and mastered by Andy Heermans, the bassist for John Cage in the 1980s.&nbsp;

Thoughtful and reflective with a knack for rendering outside-world concerns in the landscape of the personal, Bright Brown continues to venture into new frontiers, casting the Stick in a fresh light as a songwriter’s instrument with each successive song. Joy Askew came to New York City from the North of England in the 80’s and has enjoyed an embellished career playing keyboards and singing alongside music icons such as Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, Joe Jackson, Rodney Crowell, Jack Bruce, and Quincy Jones. She has performed with her own band on stages from NYC’s CBGBs to festivals in UK, USA, Japan and Europe and opened for David Bowie and David Byrne among others. Now as a re-invented musical poet she has been a dedicated songwriter since the late nineties and her ninth album as an artist, Everything Is Different, was released in May 2022. Joy also sings in a Brooklyn choir that was featured on a Sufjan Stevens EP, collaborated with a British brass band and released a downtempo jazz electronica album along the way. Her band in NYC features Tony Mason on drums and Andy Hess on bass, along with guitarist Luca Benedetti.

Daniel Hoffman is a writer and psychotherapist from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In the early 2010s, his work was featured on various blogs. For a period he was also a ghost-writer for Guideposts, a magazine that features inspirational, religious-themed true stories. More recently he has published and presented on the tropic of the treatment of severe mental illness in community health settings. He is currently a student at the Psychoanalytic Association of New York. Gabi Shiner (she/her) is a multidisciplinary comedic performer whose work has appeared at Union Hall, Brooklyn Comedy Collective, The Tank, The Windjammer, Good Judy, The Wild Project (East Village Queer Film Festival), TV Eye and all around town. She has written satire for Reductress and her tweets and memes have been featured in Dazed, Complex, and Vulture.&nbsp; Eion is a comedian, writer, and video maker from Upstate New York who regularly features at The Tiny Cupboard in Bushwick, and produces and hosts the comedy music show, “Let’s See What Happens” at The Gutter in Williamsburg.

He’s a self-taught singer, guitarist, harmonica player, and lyricist who patterns his style on troubadour types — Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Aimee Mann, Adrianne Lenker, Cass McCombs. Based in Brooklyn, Dustin performs regularly at venues in the borough, and has also appeared at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago, IL; The Bitter End in Manhattan, NY; and the Levitt Pavilion in Westport, CT.

Gathered in a harmonious "jam circle," they play ancient fiddle tunes in a mesmerizing mantra-like unison, while the rhythmic beats of Appalachian flatfoot dancing reverberate around them. Our "regulars" are seasoned musicians and dancers, guiding the jam with expertise and generosity, welcoming participants of all skill levels. At its heart, this is a vibrant and inclusive community of musicians and dancers, united in their passion for traditional Appalachian music and fostering genuine connections with one another. The host of The Kite Old-Time Jam is Mark Piro, an old-time fiddler, guitarist, and mandolinist. Mark has been organizing and leading old time jams in Manhattan for 20 years. Past and present venues include The Baggot Inn, Slainte, Grisly Pear, Paddy Reilly's, Salmagundi Club, and the Green Room. This year they decided to try to match or beat the magic of the first one. In light of world events it was decided to be a benefit for direct aid to Gaza. The lineup for this year’s program brings together a dynamic collection of artists from a community of friends.

Black August commemorates political prisoners and freedom fighters in the long arc of the struggle for Black Liberation, drawn on the radical inheritance of ancestors and demanding the abolition of the carceral state. As part of a shared struggle of all oppressed peoples everywhere, we remember the teachings of militant psychoanalyst Frantz Fanon and the necessity of collective study. This program of four films travels across territories divided as West Africa — Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal — and Algeria in North Africa, and the United States, blurring false borders to show interconnected episodes of resistance and revolution from colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism. With over ten years experience as a disc jockey, Monday Blue has worked with organizations and brands such as The Meteor, Soho Grand Hotel, Weeksville Heritage Center, Soul in the Horn, The Pulitzer Prizes, Spelman College, Black Girls Love Vinyl, 651 Arts, Virgin Hotels NYC, H&amp;M, Andscape, and Buy From A Black Woman. Monday Blue plays both digital and analog, but her heart beats with vinyl. A featured DJ at Soho Grand Hotel in New York City, Monday Blue is also the official tour DJ for the Buy From A Black Woman Inspire Tour presented by H&amp;M. Additionally she performs in the theatrical realm. Monday Blue was the onstage DJ for Stacey Sargeant’s production Buh Wha’ Trouble is Dis? as part of New York Theater Workshop’s 2019 summer residency at Dartmouth and also lent her skills to Life In Sepia: Vermont’s Black Burlesque Revue in 2021. Monday Blue is the founder and resident DJ of Doyennes of Disc, a vinyl party featuring all women selectors with Brooklyn’s BierWax serving as homebase. After a childhood of moving too often for seeds to catch root, singer-songwriter&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://melissamaryahern.bandcamp.com/music">Melissa Mary Ahern</a>&nbsp;has called New York City home longer than anywhere else. Sweetness and sorrow go hand in hand in Melissa’s music. Her honeyed vocals deliver melancholic lyrics with a precision that in one breath can cut you open and stitch you right back up again. Her songs explore her experiences with substance abuse, a struggle that was heightened by her various work in nightlife, starting at the early age of 19. The tragic loss of her oldest brother to cancer led to a series of revelatory experiences that eventually helped Melissa achieve sobriety. She reflects on these themes of struggle, love and loss through her characteristically soft vocalizations and dream-like melodies. Melissa has collaborated with Sufjan Stevens, played numerous venues around New York City, and is releasing her first LP, Kerosene, with FatCat Records in early 2025. Nestled in Ridgewood, Queens, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://open.spotify.com/artist/5j0V56Zqx0qP692182kRbc?si=dNXiUdd0STS_XjUX5YIRjA">Lu Carter</a> is a singer-songwriter whose music explores the intricacies of finding solitude within city life. Her music, woven with heartfelt lyrics and gentle guitar strums, evokes a sense of nostalgia and hopefulness. Drawing inspiration from the city's energy and ambiance, Lu crafts simple melodies, inviting listeners on a journey through the tapestry of human emotion. ﻿Best known for her rendition of Townes Van Zandt’s “Buckskin Stallion Blues,” which featured prominently in the Golden Globe-winning film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://www.amyannelle.com/">Amy Annelle</a>'s heartfelt music has resonated globally. Her new album, The Toll, showcases Annelle’s deft musical language — one that transcends genre boundaries, and features lush instrumentation, stirring harmonies, and elegant arrangements. The Toll is imbued with a lifetime of lived experience, offering intimate and raw narratives that are deep-seated and rooted in authenticity, complex yet playful.&nbsp;

Presented by Portland's Church of Film for their 11th anniversary, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://youtu.be/6VdKlM4CpoM">this collection</a> explores the history of Armenian animation at its beginnings: the Soviet Republic's Armenfilm studio! In particular, the spotlight will be on one of the world's greatest and most beloved animators, Robert Sahakyants. Included will be some of his animation masterpieces that had the animation world spellbound, and his cynical, surreal, and darkly hilarious tales such as LESSONS, THE BUTTON, and WIND. We will also be examining some works of Sahakyants' forerunners and contemporaries in Armenia! Church of Film is a long-running underground screening series from Portland, OR. Curated by Muriel Lucas, has held weekly screenings since it was founded in 2013. The program was designed to provide alternative cinema, and alternative cinema environments, with the hope of expanding accessibility to cinema art. Screenings have been held in traditional environments like theaters, but also ballrooms, bars, parks, and in activist spaces such as temporary autonomous zones and on street walls in protest spaces.

Church of Film Presents: Lamps of the Underworld

Come to The Kite for a multitude of sonic landscapes and tapestries infused with Goddess Spirituality and Spanish Culture while providing solitude, comfort, and peace for those who unfortunately have been displaced. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.carriebeehan.com/">Carrie Beehan</a> and Company's songbook DISPLACED 2024 explores the resilience and triumph of the human spirit in the face of pressing global issues. It features collective band Carrie Beehan, QuiShaun Hill, Louisa Bradshaw, Joff Wilson, and Sara Fendley. International multimedia performer, artist, and longtime East Village resident Carrie Beehan worked as a news and documentary editor for German television in Berlin from 1986-1992. She emerged as a performer and recording artist with her first recording contract in 1998 with BMG/Universal. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.instagram.com/sandzilg">Sandra Rubio</a> was born in a small town in Cádiz, Spain and has been writing and playing music since she can remember. Life took her to the US from 2002 – 2014, where she composed music for off Broadway Theatre including “Post No Bills.” Back in Spain since 2014, Sandra has been writing, performing, and composing music. Sandra is currently working on her first solo studio album, which is planned for a 2025 release. Using various instruments and synthesizers, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://linktr.ee/tackless">Tackless</a> weaves through soundscapes toward islands of moods. Tackless is the music of composer John Piatkowski (The Roadside Graves, Fun Machine, Ari Why and the Invisible College). New album coming in 2025 on Our Days Are Numbered records. 1KindWord has been DJ'ng since 1993 and creating ambient sound collages for performance and live action art. Depending on the setting, 1KindWord is often blending a multitude of genres to make the selections resonate with the crowd. Those sunshine vibes have brought 1KindWord to Brooklyn Industries, The Cake Shop, Asbury Lanes, Parlor Gallery, and unforgettable spaces in Barcelona, London, and Prague.

Officially kicking off the celebration of the Queen of Pop’s birthday at The Kite with the hosts of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/all-i-want-to-do-is-talk-about-madonna/id1485875648">All I Want To Do Is Talk About Madonna</a>, the long-running podcast that discusses Madonna’s career and music, song-by-song, album-by-album, year-by-year. Mark Snyder and Kenny Finkle will be LIVE for an evening of frank conversation, outrageous confessions, casual nudity, and some special secret surprises. It’s the steamiest month of the summer — and this show promises to make it even hotter! Truth or Dare, anyone? <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://finklefactory.org/">Kenny Finkle</a> first fell for Madonna when he was twelve. He was on a cruise with his family, and he heard Physical Attraction coming out of an aerobics class his grandmother was taking. In addition to his obsession with Madonna, Kenny is a theatre maker whose plays have been published and produced internationally. In his spare time, he is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Marymount Manhattan College where coordinates the Writing for the Stage Program. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.instagram.com/markbsnyder2024/">Mark Snyder’s</a> first encounter with Madonna was the “Open Your Heart” video in 1986; he was ten years old and started packing for New York. Mark is a writer, performer, and reader of culture and art. His plays are published by Concord Theatricals and he regularly appears as a featured guest on podcasts, radio, and in live conversation. His book of essays I Am Rooting For All of Us is forthcoming.

Live in New York: All I Want To Do Is Talk About Madonna

Come join us for a night of laughter and support a great cause! The Bad Aunties of Relative Arts present a live comedy fundraiser to help families in Gaza, hosted by Shea Vassar and Gabe Pacheco. Let's come together at The Kite for an evening filled with hilarious jokes and good vibes. Your attendance will make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Don't miss out on this opportunity to have fun while giving back! Suggested donation&nbsp;is $10. All proceeds for this event will be split evenly between two families in Palestine. Relative Arts has multiple artists in the shop who have created pieces for purchase with all funds to be donated to Palestine relief. Putting to practice our belief that direct aid is the most impactful, we are sending support to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/7s3sqq-support-nours-familys-journey-to-safety">Nour and her family</a> as they survive continued displacement.&nbsp; Earlier this summer, Shea was matched with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://gofund.me/c6f53b8a">Mai and her family's fundraiser</a>. All donations raised will be used to help the nine family members still in Gaza find safety with Khaled, Mai's brother in Belgium.&nbsp; Relative Arts is a brick-and-mortar community space, open atelier, and shop that showcases contemporary Indigenous fashion and design in NYC’s East Village. Our mission is to provide a peer-run space that fosters the advancement of Indigenous futurism through collaboration, celebration, and education. We are Indigenous owned and operated by Korina Emmerich (Puyallup) and Liana Shewey (Mvskoke). Howdy Cat Comedy is dedicated to creating live comedy experiences with intentional lineups that properly reflect the diversity of New York City. Created and run by Shea Vassar (Cherokee), Howdy Cat believes in the liberation of all Indigenous diasporic communities all over the world. That's Poetic, a comedy-poetry hybrid show where a poet writes new work based on the jokes being told, is in residency at Friends and Lovers in Crown Heights until September 2024. Gabe Pacheco is a Brooklyn based upbeat bilingual performer who has appeared at several national festivals. His voice is on John Fugelsang’s Tell Me Everything, on Sirius XM and the “Katie Halper Show”. He is a member of the Story Pirates community. His album “Risky Behavior” is out on 800 Pound Gorilla Records. He hosts a weekly live show Funhouse Comedy in Williamsburg and a weekly politics and pop-culture podcast “Halal Cartels.”
