    NOCHE COLOMBIANA
features Bay Area musicians who have steeped themselves deeply in the folk music of Colombia. Kicking things off in 2024, the Ivy Room hosts two such bands that have gained loyal followings in recent years. Neblinas Del Pacifico begin the night with high-energy Afro-Colombian marimba de chonta music of the Pacific Coast, full of rich polyrhythm, soulful harmonies, infectious camaraderie and warmth of spirit. Los Bahianatos close out the evening with accordion-centered dance music of the Caribbean coast and Magdalena river valley, including cumbia and vallenato, interweaving regional folk anthems with popular hits of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Doors open at 9:00pm with DJ Jose Ruíz spinning tasty classics from Colombia and beyond.

Los Bahianatos (Accordion Music of the Caribbean Coast and Magdalena River Basin)

Los Bahianatos specialize in Colombian dance music featuring the button accordion, including cumbia, vallenato, salsa colombiana and música sabanera en acordeón. It’s a repertoire stacked with hidden gems and international hits by some of Colombia's most influential accordionists and composers of the 20th century, the music of the juglares, including Alejo Durán, Calixto Ochoa, Andres Landero, Adolfo Pacheco, Lisandro Meza, Alfredo Gutierrez, Miguel Durán and Enrique Diaz. Founded in Oakland, California, during the early months of the pandemic, Los Bahianatos remain the premier cumbia and vallenato group en 'La Bahia’. Featuring: José Rivera on vocals, guacharaca and güira; Chris Reid on accordion and vocals; Brax on the bass guitar; and Dave Eagle playing caja vallenata, congo, tambor and campana.

Neblinas Del Pacifico (Marimba Music of the Pacífico Afro-Colombiano)

Based in La Mission en San Francisco, Neblinas del Pacífico play marimba de chonta music from the Afro-Colombian Pacific coast: music of rivers and mangroves, of polyrhythm and harmony, of spirituality and everyday life, of roots and tradition, of celebration and resistance. The members of Neblinas have roots in Colombia and Indonesia. They partner with and support Black-led grassroots community initiatives in Buenaventura, Guapi, Timbiquí, Tumaco, Quibdó, and Cali. Featuring: Federico Ardila, Pipe Arrechea, Juliana Mejía, May-Li Khoe, Andrés Reyes on marimba de chonta, bombos, cununos, guasás, and vocals.

    DJ José Ruíz

José Ruíz has been a mainstay in the Bay Area music scene for over 30 years as a DJ, radio host and promoter. Jose’s confidence and impeccable taste in music is deeply rooted in the time and research he dedicates to learn about the genres he plays. His respect for the origins and tradition of the music he loves can be heard in depth as a radio host, and felt when he fills the dance floor. Jose holds residencies at Comal restaurants in Berkeley and Oakland, the Sausalito Seahorse, and at La Peña’s popular monthly event, Baila! He also hosts a weekly radio program, En Clave, on KPOO 89.5 FM, and is one of the principal visionaries behind The Annex Sessions, a weekly event in El Cerrito featuring a wide spectrum of folk music from throughout the world.
