After adding Damian Detroit (Drums) the band kicked off in June 2003, stopping for nothing. Now, with over ten years of touring internationally and over two thousand live shows, the touring trio’s current home is out on the open road.The Koffin Kats began by putting together songs with such subjects as dealing with the horrors of the real world, as well as Science Fiction. The band started in small local bars playing for beer, hoping for gas money, and eventually made their way out of the Midwest. The next couple of years contained positives including numerous North American tours, and negatives concerning changes at the drumming position. During this time they released their first three albums: Koffin Kats (2003), Inhumane (2005), and Straying From The Pack (2006).The three album releases and their supporting tours gained attention for The Koffin Kats and helped get the band noticed in the wide world of punk and psychobilly. In 2007 Vic and Tommy connected with drummer Eric “E-Ball” Walls to record the band’s fourth studio album, Drunk In The Daylight (2008), and catalyzed what the band is now known for: love for their fans and the road, and playing everywhere for everyone willing to watch and listen.In the years following the release of Drunk In The Daylight, The Koffin Kats have established their name performing in Europe, and have also been included on tours with some of the tops acts in psychobilly, including, but not limited to, Mad Sin, Nekromantix, and The Meteors. In 2009 the trio released their fifth studio album, Forever For Hire, and Tommy departed at the year’s end to pursue a normal life. Shortly thereafter, “EZ” Ian Jarrell took over the guitarist position and joined the band on tour. While on the road they worked on the material that would become featured on their split album with fellow psychobilly act 12 Step Rebels, From Our Hands To Yours (2011).The Koffin Kats signed with Sailor’s Grave Records in late 2011, and released Our Way &amp; The Highway in January 2012. The trio supported their sixth studio album’s release with non-stop international touring, finally ending in summer of 2013. In autumn of the same year, they released another full-length album with Sailor’s Grave Records, Born Of The Motor.Early 2014 brought another change to The Koffin Kats’ member roster. Ian Jarrell left the band to handle personal business at home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Not wanting to bring someone too far removed from The Koffin Kats family into the fold, Vic and Eric enlisted John Kay (Guitar). John was the engineer on some previous KK recordings.The founding lineup returned in 2016. Six years after his departure, Tommy Koffin returned to playing guitar with The Koffin Kats. With Vic Victor on lead vocals and upright bass, and E Ball Walls on drums. In 2017, the trio self released the album “Party Time In The End Times” under the Koffin Kats Records label. The band toured throughout the following years until the Covid 19 Pandemic brought live entertainment to a halt.During the unexpected break from touring, the band took time to write and record. Vic and Tommy put together an acoustic release called “Victor &amp; Koffinfunkle.” Back in writing mode they then focused on new material. This brought about the early 2021 self release of “Ya Can’t Take It With Ya.” A 6 track EP.The band continues to tour and is currently working on new material to release throughout 2023, their 20th anniversary year.THE LAST GANG—The year is 2021. America is still fighting its way through an ongoing pandemic, currently fueled by the ignorance of millions who have decided science isn’t good enough for them. Countless lives have been lost or disrupted by an inefficient government loaded with corrupt politicians, egged on by snake oil salesmen who are inexplicably given nightly platforms on cable TV or allowed to spread their disinformation through social media. Make no mistake: Rome is burning. We are fiddling.Pissed off yet? So is The Last Gang. This California punk quartet had big plans for 2020, with a seemingly endless string of tour dates keeping them on the road in support of their Fat Wreck Chords debut, Keep Them Counting. Crowds were getting bigger. Sing-alongs were getting louder. Spirits were getting higher. The only problem? The band was trying to write a new record simultaneously, and it wasn’t going well.“Our downfall is we want to tour a lot, but it’s sometimes hard for us to write because it takes so much out of me,” begins frontwoman Brenna Red. When the world came to a standstill in March 2020, it was actually a blessing in disguise for Red. She could finally focus on everything happening outside of their tour van — and she quickly realized it wasn’t pretty.“Because COVID happened, I was allowed to not rush, and we stepped back and re-wrote songs,” she explains. “Then I went to Fat Mike’s to write with him, and he challenged me to write more Clash-influenced reggae. I listened to London Calling to get inspired, but I think Joe Strummer once said if you want to be inspired, don’t listen to your idols — listen to your idols’ idols. So I also listened to a lot of Toots And The Maytals and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and a ton of Trojan Records compilations.”One listen to Noise Noise Noise, and you’ll discover a band who has not only pushed their musical boundaries in new and unexpected ways, but a lyricist in Red who has unlocked a new side of herself, spitting barbs both personal and political at whoever might listen. We’re obviously punk at our core,” she says. “People expect to hear something, and that can become tedious and somewhat boring. But when you throw somebody a curveball, if they hate it, that’s fine. But more than likely, they’re gonna go, ‘What is this?’ and it’ll pull them more into the album.”Noise Noise Noise is nothing if not full of curveballs. The album opens with the “Guns Of Brixton”-esque title track, the first of the album’s many forays into guitar upstrokes and elastic basslines. The next curveball comes in the very next track, “WFTW,” the rare punk song that’s four minutes long and feeling a little bit like Searching For A Former Clarity-era Against Me!with Red cramming as many syllables into her verses as humanly possible. It’s also one of many new songs elevated by lead guitarist Ken Aquino, making his recorded debut with the now-quartet.“Ken is a great lead guitar player, but my huge thing I love about Ken is at his core, he’s a melody man — he can sing pretty,” she gushes. “He adds so much to our band.” Aquino also used to work in the same studio as producer Cameron Webb (Motörhead, Sum 41), who just so happened to be behind the boards for Noise Noise Noise (which was also co-produced by NOFX’s Fat Mike and Useless ID’s Yotam Ben Horin). Red was thrilled to reunite with Webb, who previously produced Keep Them Counting. “I know he’s not going to let me sound bad,” she says. “He’s going to push me.”Look no further than “Shameless,” a true gem of the album, a melodic punk banger with Red turning in a career-best vocal performance. The curveballs keep coming deep into the tracklisting, with the sludgy 6/8 tune “Intelligence Is A Plague.” In it, Red fires salvo after salvo at the ignorant masses as well as the publications that prey upon them (marking what is probably the first time alt-right “news” outlet Breitbart has been name-checked in a song).“It was inspired by this overwhelming feeling of ‘Why aren’t we listening to the people who can tell us how to fix these huge problems?’ COVID, climate change, you name it. To me, it’s like, ‘I don’t know what to do, so I’m going to listen to you.’ But those people don’t want to be humble. They’d rather be ignorant and feel like they’re right.”This gets to the crux of Noise Noise Noise: These songs speak to her, and she hopes they speak to you, too. “I write music just to be alive,” she concludes. “I hope there’s something that can be taken from it to make you feel that electricity inside of yourself, whether happiness, pain, bittersweet memories… Just pick apart the art and put it inside of your own life.”LAST THREAD—

Featured musicians include: <h2>— BEN BLOOM</h2>—Ben Bloom is a guitarist, performer, recording artist and composer with a rich and diverse career spanning over 25 years. Ben co-founded the instrumental psych/funk band Polyrhythmics and has recorded/performed with and composed music for many of the finest and funkiest, West-Coast, recording and touring projects including: Unsinkable Heavies, Rezin Tooth, Rippin Chicken, The Oscillators, Big Kitty, Funkways, The Funk Revolution, Rezin Tooth, Delvon Lamaar Organ Trio, Seattle Secret Sound Society, War Pigeon and many more. Ben’s unique approach to guitar playing and composition, stems from his love for the great rhythm, funk, and R&amp;B guitar players of the 60’s and 70s. While a skilled lead player who is fully capable of lighting up a stage, Ben is happiest sitting in the pocket and treating his guitar like a percussion instrument, adding syncopated lines, funky rhythm chops and wah wah drenched lines to support and enhance the sonic moment both in studio, and on the bandstand. <h2>Billy D Thompson</h2>— Billy D Thompson is a drummer, songwriter, producer, and engineer based in Sacramento. He brings a unique and joyful approach to the drums at every performance. Both playful and powerful, Billy D has a reputation for welcoming the audience into the music. He’s toured extensively with Boot Juice, and his own band The Gold Souls, and played many California stages with Ten Foot Tiger and Sun Hop Fat. He runs Warm &amp; Fuzzy Music, collaborating with many of Sacramento’s great up and coming artists in the studio. <h2>Grant Schroff</h2>— Grant Schroff has been earning a reputation as a first call drummer, composer and producer for the last 15 years. He is a founding member of Seattle’s psych-funk powerhouse, Polyrhythmics. Holding down the drum chair as well as composing many tunes for the band. Grant is based in Seattle but has toured the United States, Canada and Europe extensivily. He has also recorded and/or toured with Delvon Lamar Organ Trio, Skerik, Lucky Brown and Unsinkable Heavies just to name a few. Currently he is working on his first record as band leader under the name Champagne Bubblebath. <h2>Jason Gray</h2>— Jason Gray is well known as a bass player’s bass player within the deep funk and soul realm. The third co-founder of Seattle’s premier large format Afro-Psych band - the Polyrhythmics, as well as serving as a long-time first call side man for local and regional artists. His heavily rooted bass lines have been inspiring people to move to the groove all across Europe and North America. Also an accomplished studio engineer and producer, he has operated Blue Mallard Recording for the last 15 years in West Seattle. This is where many a Seattle band has passed through to add top-quality recordings to their legacy.<h2> Background</h2>— Started in June, 2023, Instrumental Funk Sessions at the Ivy Room showcase local and touring musicians collaborating in unique combinations that highlight the musicality and virtuosity of each performer. Consisting of 10 tracks in 42-minutes, it’s an expansive, focused and fearless collection, representing a world where Duke Ellington and Augustus Pablo rub shoulders with crate-digger exotica, the freak-funk of Parliament and the ‘anything fits’ outsider ethos of acid-fried punks like The Meat Puppets. A trio featuring Mike Dillon (Ricki Lee Jones, Ani DiFranco, Les Claypool) on vibraphone, marimba, Prophet 6, congas, and bongos, Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) on drums, cymbals and vocals, Punkadelick is the unified vision of six hands creating a world that often sounds like the work of an ensemble three times the size. During 2020 and 2021, while many music venues were still shuttered, the group began touring, sweating their way through cuts Dillon and Haas had composed during quarantine writing sessions. Locking in on stage, it quickly became clear the band was functioning at a level that made the hair on their arms stand at attention—even for three live music veterans accustomed to life on the road. “It became obvious to let this become a collaboration,” Dillon says. “This is really something all three of us are doing because we have so much love for one another and a love for the music that we started creating.” “There’s only three of us, but we move together like a big, nasty school of fish,” Haas adds, laughing. During the tail end of a 2021 tour, the band booked time to record with engineer—and functioning fourth band member—Chad Meise, and Inflorescence sprouted. Opener “Desert Monsoon,” sets the stage with a spiritual-jazz intro of organ, vibraphone, percussion and wordless vocal coos before crackling to life as a swaggering funk strut. The title track, and “Pandas,” dig into thick dub textures built around Glaspie’s drumming and Haas’s subwoofer-straining bass synths. “Apocalypse Daydream,” which appeared as an exotic head-nodder on 2020’s Shoot the Moon (titled “Apocalyptic Daydreams”) is reborn as a meatier jazz-rock slab where Dillon and Haas circle each other like Television performing as a lounge act on a cruise ship sailing seas of psilocybin. Bending ears and surprising audiences has long been part of Dillon’s MO and Glaspie and Haas act as perfect foils for forays into the weird. While Dillon bristles at the “punk jazz” tag, punk rock and jazz remain core influences to the band, in sound and spirit. “We’re students of the titans of music. We grew up listening to punk and rock ’n’ roll but we also love instrumental music—particularly the forefathers of Black American Music. In our minds, Led Zeppelin and Milt Jackson, Parliament-Funkadelic and The Minutemen, The Bad Brains and Frank Zappa are interconnected influences,” explains Dillon. “All that comes together in how we approach instrumental creative music. Both punk rock and jazz are not prefab things, they’re about the freedom. We have no genre restriction in this band, and people who get it really respect that.” Maybe the greatest example of the band’s punk-steeped sonic free-for-all is “Slowly But Surely,” a track Dillon told Haas to compose as if he were “writing for Queens of the Stone Age.” The song plays like QOTSA translated to piano runs, vibes and deeply swinging drums—big-riff stoner rock upended and played with huge smiles by America’s premier proponents of the unclassifiable. “We try to challenge our listeners. We’re touching a nerve with people who maybe don’t want to see the same songs done in the same variations all night long,” continues Dillon. “Part of my mission is taking these instruments that are primarily designed for the orchestral or jazz world and taking them to the rock world, the club world, running them through pedals and effects. We’re not afraid to be soft, or to surprise. That’s what we all do in this band — get beyond our own conceptions of what music is supposed to be.” “We are so blessed and lucky to do what we do for a living — it’s apparent in the music,” Glaspie chimes in. “It doesn’t matter how the day is going, but we get to the club, set up and crush the gig, all the other stuff doesn’t matter. We’re likeminded individuals who love life, love people and want to spread happiness.”

The crazed garage punk outfit Throw Rag are local boys, and the parallels between the landscape of their youth and the music they make are inescapable. Throw Rag's music brings together elements of vintage rockabilly, the Irish folk-punk of the Pogues, the minimalist pop suss of the Ramones and the Undertones, an oddly piratical band persona that recalls, of all people, the near-forgotten U.K. post-punks Tenpole Tudor, plus some good old-fashioned low desert country and blues along with the requisite dose of snotty garage band attitude. Yet somehow the group manages to synthesize all of these disparate influences into something entertainingly unique.<h2></h2><h2></h2>

But what about when you’re not so sure? When you’re unsteady, angry, swayable, and doing your damned best anyway?&nbsp;There’s something refreshingly humane about that uncertainty; about having the guts to try, even if you might be wrong. This is the central tenant of Humbird’s third full-length album, Right On, a radical ethos in this soap-box age, and an effort worth turning up the amps for, resulting in the project’s most electric, playful, mettled record yet.&nbsp;Siri Undlin (the songwriter behind the moniker) and her collaborators tracked live and to tape over the course of two muggy weeks in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. For a collection of songs unafraid of ambiguity, it’s music that bares its teeth. Anger and dismay sizzle in response to current events. Heartbreak feels like sandpaper, while wildflowers bob and sway in an ever-expanding universe.&nbsp;Produced by Shane Leonard and featuring regular contributors Pat Keen (bass, synth, percussion) and Pete Quirsfeld (drums and percussion), the majority of the songs showcase the locked-in rock trio, a progression from the contemplative folk musings of Undlin’s previous releases. Even so, Right On incorporates friendly winks to the more whimsical, soundscape-y improvisations that audiences have come to expect from a Humbird performance - electrified, gritty, Midwest Americana with a little magic fairy dust thrown in.&nbsp;“Right On,” the title track and first song of the album, opens the record with a tone of resigned tenacity. ‘I’m not mad, but I should be / since true love proved unlucky / I cast the dye, I stained my hands / on wrongful judgments and half-baked plans.’ As the song moves through time and space, “being wrong” feels less and less like a failure, and instead transforms into guiding wisdom. The warm tremolo of the guitar maps along the grooves of the rhythm section, creating an atmosphere of inviting imperfection, a clever catalyst for the chorus’ simple melody to launch and land right in the tender part of your sternum.&nbsp;Other notable tracks include “Child Of Violence,” complete with psych-rock phaser pedals, which explores the legacy and impact of white supremacy in middle America; “Cornfields and Roadkill” focuses in on land stolen for profit, and old-growth forests traded for mono-crops in a sonic landscape reminiscent of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. “Song For The Seeds” is a slow-burning synth number, imploring the listener to tear up their lawn. It wields a refrain that will germinate in your mind - a proper earworm.Through observation and deft questioning, the lyrics land less like a political agenda and more like a hard conversation with a friend. All the while, you can hear the summertime pace where the recording took place, and the steady confidence of songs that have already traveled many miles on the road.&nbsp;And those miles - they’re hard-earned. For Undlin, growing up steeped in church choirs and traditional Irish ensembles eventually led to conducting extensive folklore and musical research around the world as a Watson Fellow. That work inspired years of DIY touring around North America, including performing around the twin cities one backyard at a time during the pandemic. Undlin continues to expand and experiment as a writer and bandleader in a way that is fluid with each season, and oddly suited for this particular moment. Following the surprise success of the self-released debut album Pharmakon and the pensive reflections of 2021’s Still Life, Right On is the next iteration in her process of witnessing the world in all its complexity and responding with candid consideration.&nbsp;For loyal fans and new listeners alike, Right On is a mischievously kind offering: a whole heap of songs that are unafraid to bask in the perfectly ordinary and also excruciating possibility that sometimes we’re right, often we’re wrong, but no matter what, music can meet us where we’re at and keep us company along the way.&nbsp;

In 2017, Drake was coming off a ridiculously fruitful run of songwriting in bands like Evasive Backflip and Anthony Fremont’s Garden Solutions—his idiosyncratic side-project with Water From Your Eyes’ Nate Amos, Options’ Seth Engel, and NNAMDÏ—and releasing records on Grandpa Bay Recordings, the label he operated with Nate Amos. Wringing as much creativity out of his subconsciousness as possible, Drake put out nine records in 2016 alone, including a commissioned video game soundtrack – and that’s just the music that he made public.Physically overextended and creatively exhausted, Drake watched as key pillars of his life started to crack: he experienced a heart-shattering breakup, his mundane job ate up all his time, and he fell into a deep depression. “I kept staring at the dress shoes that my job made us wear, thinking, ‘What am I doing? Why am I here?’” he says. After saving up a sizable chunk of money, Drake took it as a sign to embark on a full-fledged solo adventure, the kind of self-discovery road trip that rigid schedules can’t afford, and bought a “shitty old pickup truck camper” to drive across the country.“I decided to travel for a few months and record an album on the road, but I had the most insane writer’s block,” says Drake. “I didn’t even know how bad it would feel until I felt it. You can’t make anything that you like or even feel good enough to finish it. So I just had a bunch of these weird carcasses growing in my computer, these half-songs, and I didn’t know what the fuck they were supposed to be.”Over the next string of months, Drake drove to Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado. When his campervan sank into quicksand in the Mojave Desert and a kind stranger towed the vehicle out, Drake cut his losses and accepted a restaurant job offer from a friend in San Diego, but he numbed his self-disappointment by partying for months on end; everything was a blur. Eventually out of money, Drake trudged back to Chicago and found an underwhelming job that paid well and, most importantly, introduced him to a coworker that changed the direction of his life.“She was an amazing influence. One day, she told me to go home, put on The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails, and turn it up,” he recounts. “I’m cleaning my apartment listening to it and I just stopped and sat there, like, What the fuck? This was someone pouring their heart out, even the really dark shit, and with a zoned-in, singular vision. Trent Reznor had this moment, this burst, and saw it through – and I took that as a cue.”Inspiration pulsed through Drake like it hadn’t in years. Free from expectations of the perfect comeback song or his next great masterpiece, he started writing music with no audience in mind – including himself. “I started a new file named ‘One day: GO!’ and started writing so fast without trying to do anything. “I stopped trying to be a certain type of artist, or the type of artist I thought I wanted to be. I just wrote. It was a stream-of-consciousness exercise that finally freed me. It’s weird how easily that switch flipped, but it did, and it was beyond exciting.” Drake didn’t return to his former self. Instead, he found the clearer, truer version of himself that he initially hoped to discover. And now, he had a pool of songs to help him get back on his feet.Recorded with a cheap interface on his “shitty, run-down laptop that slowly died throughout the entire process of the album,” Drake began compiling ideas that would eventually turn into the 14 songs on Save Point 1. He experimented with new techniques and plug-ins, allowed himself to shred guitar solos with a unique self-taught approach, and even picked up an old violin he had laying around. Guitar, bass, and a few drum parts were recorded live, while Drake turned to his keyboard to design virtual instrumentation for the rest: strings, horns, synth, and the rest of the drums. The resulting material is giddy and dreamy, an Olympic-height diving board from which to dive through indie rock and videogame soundtracks, thrilling math-rock riffs that turn experimental, and synths that glow in rainbow hues. Just turn to the Tera Melos-meets-The Postal Service glitchpop of “Heaven’s in the Rot” or the slow-motion acoustic glitter that is “Dragon It Out” to hear it in motion. Drake even composed a two-part “Haunted” suite that funnels his unpredictable experimentation into a darker, weirder direction.In the midst of this, Adult Swim commissioned Drake to compose original music for Thoron the Conqueror, a 2023 short film. Drake ended up penning both the soundtrack and score, expanding upon the visual’s neon-hued tones with music that was at once glittery and rubbery to reflect its enigmatic lead character. “The process of composing that score helped me get out of the way of my own ego, so to speak, and open my mind to even more possibilities,” he recalls.Inspired to go bigger and bolder when he returned to his Save Point 1 tracks, Drake pushed himself to grow as a singer, too. “I definitely was utilizing a lot of vocal exercises, trying different things out with enunciation and volume, and figuring out how to help my voice sound the best it can,” he says. It’s most audible on “fallinlove.gottadoit” when Drake segues from outright yelling to soft, sugary crooning in a way that accents the song’s bold trumpets. The same is true of the auto-tune takes, too, like on the shimmery “Paradise” where Drake elongates his notes and tries singing with a more delicate delivery.Save Point 1 is also the first record Drake wrote since befriending, and becoming deeply influenced by, David Berman. The late Silver Jews musician was writing his new Purple Mountains album and, after stumbling across Drake’s videogame soundtrack, emailed Drake in hopes of collaborating. “David had just gone through a divorce, and I had gone through my big breakup, so we were both just fucking depressed,” says Drake. “We would go to bars, hang out, and David would send me poetry. That changed everything for me, because it got me into poetry – including David’s. His lyrics blew my mind; I never knew how powerful lyrics could be before I met him, and he completely influenced me to take my time with every single line and push myself to be a better writer.”That consideration and attention to detail is all over Save Point 1. On “The Grind,” Drake sings about keeping himself alive with a 9-to-5 job while trying not to lose his creative drive. His production is equally as slick and free-roaming as his Sooper labelmate Sen Morimoto, but Drake distinguishes himself with a snappier tone. Take “Doomsday Serenade,” which speeds up drum’n’bass with jazzy guitar riffs in a manner more akin to video game soundtracks than the indie rock gloss of his peers. Even “Train Track Pillowcase” finds a pocket of hope amidst its worried lyrics. “I wanted there to be some levity because it’s true: the darkness can be ridiculous in a way,” says Drake.As its title implies, Save Point 1 isn’t just a new beginning, but a reintroduction for Marcus Drake the musician, the producer, and most of all the person. Perhaps the best sign of it all is that he’s releasing the album under his real name. Over the years, he put out various solo records under monikers like Marque Drake and Jamarcus, modifications of his own name – a partial ownership of who he was while slightly distancing himself simultaneously. With Save Point 1, Drake is assured in who he is and the type of music that he—and only he—makes. “This feels the most like me album that I've ever done musically,” says Drake. “A big part of these songs, even extending back to the truck camper-era, was to find what music I’m making that I actually enjoy making and that feels authentically me. That’s what this album is: a reconstruction of who I am as a musician. And now, I’m finally here.”

Guided by this interplay, seemingly disparate influences, from chamber music to hot jazz, are focused through emphatic lyricism.In 2011 a group of friends at UC Berkeley had recently graduated and were contemplating job options. Finding that by hauling their spinet piano to nearby subway stations and busking together they could make enough to survive in the Bay Area, the path forward was clear. After the first few haphazard street shows and a generous write-up in the San Francisco Chronicle, the newly-formed John Brothers Piano Company began receiving opportunities to bring their wild sound in off the street. They landed a weekly residency at an after-hours club where they played from 2-6AM every Friday night for a year and have since been invited to play at The Fonda Theatre, Regency Ballroom, Great American Music Hall, Monterey Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ, Stern Grove Festival, Coup-de-Grace Festival, and Outside Lands. In addition to headlining their own shows across the US, John Brothers Piano Company has supported a variety of international touring artists including Karen O, Joan Osbourne, and Booker T.John Thatcher Boomer (piano, clarinet), Arlo Perlstein (trumpet, piano), Jimi Marks (drums, piano), and Kent Kessinger (bass) inject their diverse musical instincts and backgrounds into every composition. However, the defining quality of the band lies not in what genres it bends or blends, but in the fact that performance has always been their rehearsal space. From their first sidewalk street shows to the weekly speakeasy, an audience has been present throughout the development of their sound. In an era when Punk devolved into metal they went in a direction uniquely their own.The original line-up of Ralph Spight (Guitar, Vocals), Larry Boothroyd (Bass) and Devon VrMeer (Drums) caught the collective attention of the underground with their 1986 debut release "Voltage and Violets" (Mordam/Konkurrel), an angry brew of off-kilter rhythms and cut and paste histrionics. On 1988’s "Things I Hate To Admit" (Mordam/Konkurrel) they stretched out further from placid instrumentals leading to furious diatribes about the late 80’s cultural miasma. In a live setting VF was a well-oiled machine, a tight and relentlessly challenging barrage of Devon and Larry’s syncopated attack and Ralph’s alternately musical and noisy approach to both guitar and singing.After Devon’s departure VF roadie Tim Solyan was recruited to fill the drum chair and the resultant 1990 album "White Bread Blues" (Mordam/Konkurrel) was a roller coaster ride through a flaming funhouse. Produced by No Means No drummer John Wright, the album made Victims Family a headlining act throughout Europe and North America. Wright was also brought into produce "The Germ" (Alternative Tentacles/Konkurrel 1992). After splitting for a time in 1992 they came back in 1994 with "Headache Remedy" (Alternative Tentacles/Konkurrel) and 1995’s live set "Four Great Thrash Songs" (Alternative Tentacles/Konkurrel). Then after ten years and six albums VF disbanded or so it seemed.Back in California Larry formed Saturn’s Flea Collar with Austin TX transplant Jason Christian and, needing a guitarist, called on Ralph. The trio explored effects laden sci-fi acid punk on the 7" single "Stretch to Activate" (Alternative Tentacles/Konkurrel, 1996) and the full length "Monosyllabic" (Alternative Tentacles/Konkurrel 1997), toured Europe and the U.S. and disbanded.SFC begat Hellworms which carried the VF torch through their excellent full length "Crowd Repellent" (1998, Alternative Tentacles/Konkurrel) and the "Glamorous Drug Problem" 7" (Very Small Records, 1999).With the departure of drummer Joaquin Spengemann, Ralph and Larry decided to revive the Victims Family name as an umbrella under which to play both old and new material from all three bands. After months of frustrating drummer auditions and false starts, David Gleza (ex-of My Name) was recruited and the trio began writing and recording an album entitled "Apocalicious", (Alternative Tentacles/Konkurrel, 2001). After several tours and a split single with Fleshies (Alternative Tentacles,2001) Gleza left the band to return to his native Washington State. Frustrated with their inability to keep the band together,Ralph and Larry called it quits. Ralph forming The Freak Accident and Larry formed Triclops with members of Fleshies, Bottles and Skulls and Lower 48.In 2004 Victims Family regrouped for two marathon twentieth anniversary concerts in Northern California with Tim Solyan, which also featured Ralph and Larry’s other groups The Freak Accident,Meow Meow and the Meow Meows,Saturn’s Flea Collar and Hellworms. This began a sporadic regrouping of the classic line up of the band with Solyan on drums. When they were approached in 2008 by Gerry Stumbaugh of their hometown’s Saint Rose Records to re-issue first three records, now long out of print in North America, they agreed, and began playing concerts in support of the release. The release of the “White Bread Blues" reissue (Saint Rose Records,2010) the band began playing live shows in earnest again, supporting No Means No at Petaluma’s venerable Phoenix Theater and Alternative Tentacles 30th anniversary show at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall.An invitation from the band Sabot to play Chris Rankin’s birthday party in Tabor,Czech Republic led to a 9 shows in 9 days swing through Europe in April-May 2010. Another 13 shows in 12 days swing in May of 2012 preceded the release of the first new Victims Family material in over 10 years, the “Have a Nice Day/Let’s Cancel The Future” 7” (Alternative Tentacles). Victims Family has continued to play shows throughout the Western US as time and worldwide pandemics permit and Ralph and Larry have remained active as members of Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine as well as their other projects.2024 has seen the band release their first new music in over a decade in the form of a Split LP with Portland Oregon band NASALROD entitled “In The Modern Meatspace”. The two bands have formed a close alliance over the past few years, sharing stages up and down the West Coast resulting in the combined album on Nasalrod bassist Mandy Morgan’s Nadine Records label. Victims Family plans to close out 2024 opening California shows with San Diego indie rockers Pinback and Canadian dates opening for Dead Bob, the new project of NOMEANSNO drummer and sometime VF producer John Wright.<h2>NASALROD</h2>—Described by the legendary Lydia Lunch as “harsh, hard...catchy, weird, arty" and "a very unique blend that defies category,” Portland's Nasalrod is a collaborative vision. The intensity of drummer Spit Stix (a founding member of the seminal L.A. punk band FEAR) is a major driving force behind the ferocious spazz-rock and roll quartet. The band is currently performing its frenetic act in support of their new split 12" record with Bay Area luminaries Victims Family (this record is currently available in the Alternative Tentacles catalog).Armed with a notoriously frantic live show, Nasalrod has found that originality and insanity can go hand in hand. Hard-rocking yet poignant, his music combines a love for American rock masters like Springsteen and Petty with ‘60s West Coast psychedelia and more contemporary torch-bearers like My Morning Jacket and The War on Drugs — all brought to life by a band of Northern California’s most in-demand players.Lyon has played Outside Lands and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, toured nationally and internationally, and also knows what it’s like to busk on the street. King Dream songs deftly balance hope and world-weariness. They seem wise beyond their years, and they also have a way of sneaking up on you. Their shout-along choruses and searing guitar solos are at home in a darkened saloon, to be sure, but also — you know the giddy, ragged vulnerability that arrives when you’ve been awake for way too long on a road trip? Between the good times and the clinks of beer bottles these songs inspire a wistfulness, deep in your bones, for a place you’ve never been.Glory Daze is King Dream’s first full-length since the band’s 2018 self-titled debut, and it represents a massive leap forward. Ambitious in scale and scope, it clocks in at 24 tracks, divided into three parts. Technically, these songs are a record of Lyon not only maturing as a lyricist and musician — experimenting with different production styles, moving easily between fist-pumping anthems and ballads and electronic and R&amp;B-influenced sounds — but also developing into a self-sufficient producer and engineer, a silver lining to the constraints of the pandemic.Part One, or IV, released April 7, began as a four-song EP at the beginning of 2020; over the course of two years it grew into eight soulful alt-rock anthems, a snapshot of a very specific moment in time:“Oh my god this must be the longest year / lost summer fantasies turn to fears,” sings Lyon on “Lost Summer,” over a plaintive, jangly guitar line that wouldn’t be out of place on a mixtape with the Cars, the Replacements or R.E.M. “I don’t know what day it is, weeks to months, maybe years / and the truth is I miss the music, miss my friends / I miss the magic nights, we thought these times would never end.”Written during the doldrums of the early pandemic, the track finds Lyon mourning both the abrupt end of his own extended adolescence and lamenting his little brother’s experience — graduating high school over Zoom and spending his first year of college without meeting any classmates. “When I was his age I was touring with my best friends in my mom’s minivan, playing music we believed in, making friends wherever we went,” says Lyon. “I didn’t know how to tell him what he was missing, and even if I could, or knew how, what good would it do?”“Wish I Could Call You Now,” meanwhile, captures Lyon in a rocky moment with his now-wife, overcome by doubt, confusion and fear about whether the relationship could stand the test of time. “You’re gonna spend your brightest years / counting on a love that never appears / then you’re gonna panic and settle down / with the next best thing to come around,” he sings over a driving rhythm that name-checks Jim James while bowing at the altar of Tom Petty. “I been here all along / I had that fear but now it’s gone / they don’t know you like I do / they don’t know what we’ve been through.”For Lyon, the evolution of the song — which appears in two versions on Glory Daze — reflects the growth of the relationship: “It went from a song that I kept like a secret, to a fist-pumping anthem, to a duet we now sing together.”Part Two, or V, out January 19th, sees Lyon moving into a more experimental space, fusing bedroom R&amp;B with psych-rock, and flexing new muscles in self-recording and production.On “The Wild Card,” a sexy, chilled-out synth groove that wouldn’t be out of place on a Childish Gambino record belies what Lyon describes as a lyrical panic attack. Written on the eve of the 2020 election, while fires decimated much of California, the track touches on the American political landscape, police brutality and his own shame about the lack of diversity in his music scene:“Falling farther into fascism we need a revolution / murder porn glued to your screen sedated in a debtor’s prison,” he intones. “Move to the suburbs where you feel safe / send your kids to the schools where they all look the same / everyone looks like their friends / now I feel like one of them.”“The 2020 fires were a dystopian hellscape,” says Lyon. “We couldn’t go anywhere, we had no power, it rained ash, and looked like something out of Blade Runner. We watched people murdered by the law on YouTube. I felt like a hypocrite, wanting diversity, marching against police brutality for BLM, yet living in the country, in an overwhelming white friend group I’d found through playing indie rock and Americana music.”But Glory Daze is also unmistakably a full-band effort, and its sound also reflects the group’s confidence and cohesion: What began as a studio band is now a tight-knit collective with decades of experience between them, including Adam Nash (guitar) and Nick Cobbett (drums), as well as Zak Mandel-Romann (bass), a close musical collaborator of Lyon’s since high school.Narratively, Glory Daze traverses vast territory: a period in which Lyon separated from, reconciled with, and married his now-wife (Caitlin Gowdey, Rainbow Girls, who appears on several tracks and plays keys live with King Dream when she can); toured and recorded as a sideman with a slew of Bay Area artists (Whiskerman, the Stone Foxes, M. Lockwood Porter); dealt with the grief, anxiety and loss of community wrought by a pandemic and years of sociopolitical turmoil; and careened into his 30s with a healthy dose of reflection, self-doubt and, ultimately, an audible sense of confidence and satisfaction. The result is an expansive, multifaceted album that invites the listener to climb in, lean back, and trust that getting there’s at least half the fun.“I make driving records,” says Lyon. “And this one’s about an hour-forty long, so I hope you’re going somewhere far.”<h2>ANIMAL PRINCE</h2>—Animal Prince is the retro-pop project from singer-violinist Fae Nageon de Lestang and percussionist Grant McLeod. Fae’s vocals are a captivating instrument, drawing the listener into a landscape that’s playful yet polished, soulful but never self-serious, layered with string arrangements, synth grooves, hooks, harmonies and the occasional actual birdsong. Borrowing from bossa nova, fairy folk, yacht rock and chamber pop, Animal Prince would be at home on a mix with Caroline Polacheck, Emily King, or Feist, but the sound is uniquely their own: tender, danceable and delightfully feral.<h2></h2>

It's a place where I can slow down, stay focused, and let the music flow. The spirit of my late father, a man who loved horses and motorcycles, still lingers. I often dream of him and feel his presence in my music. I hope to dedicate my future work to him and my mother, who I hope will join me in California someday.This record is a special one. In 1990, he stepped out as a solo artist, blending the uncompromising spirit of punk with country, folk, and roots rock flavors to create music that had a personality of its own without losing touch with the sensibility of . Possessing one of the richest and most expressive voices in American punk, Doe's vocal abilities were adaptable to the diverse roots rock sounds of 1990's Meet John Doe and the more introspective singer/songwriter approach of 2000's Freedom Is … Doe indulged his interest in classic country music on 2009's Country Club, recorded with Canadian roots rockers , and 2016's The Westerner and 2022's Fables in a Foreign Land showed him comfortably transitioning into a contemporary folk artist with a keen eye as a songwriter.John Doe was born John Nommensen Duchac in Decatur, Illinois on February 25, 1953. Doe spent time in Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Maryland and earned a degree at Antioch College in Baltimore before he relocated to Los Angeles, California in 1976. Doe was interested in poetry and was attending a poetry workshop in Venice, California when he met a fellow aspiring writer named . Around the same time, Doe, who had played bass in bar bands before moving to California, had answered an ad in a local newspaper from a guitarist eager to start a punk rock band. The guitarist was Billy Zoom, and when Doe brought to a rehearsal to show off some poems he thought would make good lyrics for a song, the band that would become began to coalesce. With the 1980 album Los Angeles, became the most talked about band in Los Angeles, thanks to the off-kilter harmonies of Doe and , the supercharged rockabilly guitar of , and the clattering rhythms of Doe and drummer D.J. Bonebeak. Four more albums would appear between 1981 and 1985 before left the band after Ain't Love Grand -- an experiment in pushing their music into a hard rock/metal direction, which failed to give the commercial breakthrough they desired. (Doe found time during this period to record with a pair of side projects, the acoustic country-folk combo – which also featured and Bonebrake – on 1985's Poor Little Critter on the Road, and 's group , popping up on their 1981 masterpiece A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die.)In 1987, returned with the album See How We Are, introducing new guitarist , and while the album received positive reviews, it once again failed to break the band to a larger audience. After bringing out a live set, 1988's Live at the Whisky a Go-Go on the Fabulous Sunset Strip, the band split up. By this time, Doe had been dabbling in acting, appearing in 's Salvador (1986), Allison Anders' and Kurt Voss's noir-ish L.A. scene drama Border Radio (1987), and the blockbuster Road House (1989). He had also been playing gigs on his own, and he signed a solo deal with , which had released his debut, Meet John Doe, in 1990. Doe butted heads with the album's producer during the recording sessions, and when it failed to sell to 's expectations, Doe was dropped. As it happened, 's breakthrough with Nevermind in 1991 led to plenty of major labels taking a second look at many noted underground bands of the '80s, and signed a reunited (with on guitar) for a new album, 1993's Hey Zeus! ' imprint stepped up to bring out Doe's next solo project, 1995's more rock-oriented Kissingsohard, which appeared the same year as Unclogged, a semi-acoustic live set from . Not long after the release of Unclogged, quietly broke up, though in 1998, to the surprise of many fans, the original lineup of Doe, , , and Bonebrake reunited for a handful of shows in Los Angeles. The reunion gigs were wildly successful, and continued to tour periodically from then on, when the schedules of the members permitted. While acting kept Doe busy for much of the rest of the 1990s (his résumé included roles in Pure Country, Wyatt Earp, Georgia, Boogie Nights, and Brokedown Palace), he recorded an EP in 1998 for the indie label, For the Rest of Us (it included a track Doe co-wrote with , "This Loving Thing"), and he reissued it in an expanded, album-length version in 2006 as For the Best of Us.In the 2000s, Doe devoted more time to working as a solo recording artist, offering a casually personal sound on Freedom Is…, released by the label in 2000. In 2014 released The Best of John Doe This Far, a collection of highlights from his solo career. In the spring of 2016, Doe found himself looking back and looking forward; he released a new solo album, The Westerner, while also publishing a memoir. Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of LA Punk offered an inside look at the scene that produced , with contributions from a number of his musical peers. A second autobiographical effort, More Fun in the New World: The Unmaking and Legacy of L.A. Punk, appeared in bookstores in 2019. In 2020, released their first album of new material since 1993 (and the first studio effort with since 1985), Alphabetland, which was hailed as an exciting re-creation of the band's powerful original sound. Arthur Leon Adams III (Phenomenauts, BLAMMOS) wrote his first song in bed under a blanket with a flashlight when he was 9 years old. His songwriting has improved somewhat since then. Kathryn Evangeline Adams played in rock bands on the Lower East Side and the West Village while the internet was still in diapers, so don’t bother looking it up. They met at a party in Oakland, CA and started writing and recording songs together. Blades—the funky California-based duo of Wil Blades on Hammond organ and clavinet and Scott Amendola behind the kit—and all fears will be assuaged. Blades’s cutting solos and deep bass lines make for a thick stew of soulful harmony and daring improvisation. And Amendola’s beats are simply unstoppable, simultaneously pushing the duo to heights unknown and sending the listener into a joyful sonic trance. But, in a move away from their debut album, ‘Greatest Hits,’ the new album from Amendola Vs. Blades is bursting not only with creativity, but with personnel. ‘Everybody Wins’ features only three tracks that are exclusively duo. The rest of the album sees contributions from guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise), saxophonist Skerik (Les Claypool, Garage A Trois), percussionist Cyro Baptista (Herbie Hancock, Sting), and keyboardist Rob Burger (Tin Hat Trio, Laurie Anderson). Unsurprisingly, the music is as outsized as the roster of guest musicians. Moving between any number of styles and moods, ‘Everybody Wins’ is sure to expand minds and preconceptions.The guests, of course, didn’t find themselves in the studio by chance. Amendola, for instance, plays alongside Baptista in the Nels Cline Singers, headed up by Wilco guitarist Nels Cline. And Parker and Amendola met at Berklee College of Music in the late ’80s, later appearing on the drummer’s albums, ‘Believe’ and ‘Lift.’ Parker also appears on Blades’s 2014 album Field Notes. Burger, a musical compatriot of Amendola in San Francisco circa the mid-90s, joins the duo on “Fabulous:Stupendous,” adding lush synth strings, and vintage keyboard sounds to the predominantly through composed Amendola composition. It ultimately propels the track into deep aural dimensions. Indeed, these musicians have more than just shared experiences in common; the additional players are coming from the same free-flowing arena that Amendola and Blades operate in.“Jeff, Skerik, and Cyro are all extremely broad, versatile musicians,” explains Blades. “Scott and I are the same. They just fit with what we do; they straddle a lot of stylistic boundaries, all while maintaining their musical voices. We can go in so many different directions musically, and it's really fun. Everyone is really open-minded and down to go wherever the music takes us!”It takes them a lot of places. The opening “Hi-Lo” is a thrilling, dark-hued funk piece with some odd-meter progginess thrown in. “’Fess Up (Before Ya Mess Up)” is a New Orleans groove paying tribute to NOLA piano great Professor Longhair. “Wall Town” is a laid-back, but purposeful latin-jazz number featuring some shimmery soloing from Parker. And “Hambela” works with a boogaloo groove recalling Lou Donaldson’s Blue Note LPs from the late ’60s. But the standout track might be the epic “Metropolian Hustle,” which begins in an experimental vein before moving into jittery jazz and psychedelic dub. The song has a special emphasis on collectivity.“‘Metropolian Hustle’ is more of a sketch of a song that’s about the ensemble with open sections, and not about individual solos,” says Amendola. “There’s a form, but when we play it live we’ll be doing a lot of cueing. We’re not counting bars. The idea is that the band, whether the duo or with guests, can play around with the melodies, etc. There’s a particular vibe happening in the three different sections.”More than just a confluence of friends and influences, ‘Everybody Wins’ is a celebration of Blades and Amendola’s decade-plus adventure together. The musicians first united in 2006 to perform the Duke Ellington album Far East Suite and the ball hasn’t stopped rolling since. And despite a little distance on the horizon—Blades recently relocated to L.A.—there is no end in sight for the duo that sounds like an eight-piece band. The extra-musical bond keeps growing, too.“The ‘Vs.’ is about how we mess with each other,” says Amendola. “It’s one fun part of our personal connection. Our friendship. We take the art of what we do seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Gotta have fun, mess with each other . . . and keep improvising!”

She co-owns a recording studio in Chicago, Fox Hall, where she produces records for her own projects and other artists.In 2015 Sima formed Finom (fka OHMME) along with Macie Stewart, and it has been her primary project for the past decade. Finom has been celebrated as “the heart of the Chicago music community” by Vice Magazine. They have released three acclaimed albums including Parts (2018), Fantasize Your Ghost (2020), and Not God (2024) with Joyful Noise Recordings. The band has been featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, Pitchfork, Paste, Chicago Tribune, Spin, Interview, and Rolling Stone and was recently commissioned to write and perform a piece with Seattle’s Pacific Northwest Ballet and Orchestra.An Armenian-American artist and descendent of genocide survivors, Sima has focused much of her work on building connections and healing divides through music. Over the last ten years, she has traveled to Armenia and the Caucasus to perform, participate in workshops, and foster creative cross-cultural opportunities between artists in Armenia and the United States. Fronted by consummate bar-boogie-ing showman Arnold "Action" Jackson (also known as Ajax Green, who played in '90s SF alt-country band Granfaloon Bus and more recently with garage power-pop trio the Wrong Words), the group powered by the massive drum kit of band engine Doug Pooch (aka Russ Blackmar) -- who has blown-up photos of himself on his double-bass heads.While the line-up has changed since the early days, the current version of the band has included guitarist Brian Mello (formerly with the Morning Line, the Bellyachers and currently a member of Harold Ray and East Side Dynamite) for a number of years. Gothabilly/Rock and roll.<h2>STIGMA 13</h2>—STIGMA13 was an Alternative Rock &amp; Metal band that begun in 2007 as a tribute to Sôber, but soon started to make own songs. After a Demo called "Trozos De Una Vida" [2009] the band toured along many pubs in Spain, to later dissapear in 2013 with the release of a farewell Album called "Calígine" under the Label Coitus Interruptus Records.

He writes all lyrics and songs.‬ He has performed at many music festivals in Japan such as FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL and‬ SUMMER SONIC, and performed with international artists such as Devendra Banhart, The‬ Growlers, Mild High Club, HYUKOH, etc. He was also featured in BTS's RM's 2nd album‬ "Right Place, Wrong Person"‬‭ Yuma Abe has been expanding his activities not only in Japan but also in other Asian‬‭ countries such as Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Taipei, Seoul, and‬‭ Bangkok, performing at live tours and festivals.‬‭ He had an interview with Haruomi Hosono, whom he has admired for a long time, and made‬‭ radio appearances. He also appeared in the "Yellow Magic Show 3," an event‬ commemorating the 50th anniversary of his music career, and became a topic of‬‭ conversation.‬‭ In 2021, he began his solo career and released his first solo album "Fantasia" on June 2 of‬‭ the same year.
