Initially recognized for his skill as a string band musician, Blount has charted an unprecedented, Afrofuturist course on his pilgrimage through sound archives and song collections. In his hands, the banjo, fiddle, electric guitar and synthesizer become ceremonial objects used to channel the insurgent creativity of his forebears. From transfixing solo sets to full-band festival appearances complete with crowd-surfing and ecstatic chants, Blount’s performances - like his recent Smithsonian Folkways releases, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://folkways.si.edu/jake-blount-and-mali-obomsawin/symbiont">symbiont</a>&nbsp;and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://folkways.si.edu/jake-blount/the-new-faith">The New Faith</a>&nbsp;- seamlessly merge centuries-old traditional songs with the trappings and techniques of modern Black genres. Heralded at their outset by Rolling Stone as "America's Best New Band," the resilient Silos mix punk, roots, rock, and sage art-damaged truth telling. Salas-Humara’s narratives take on the weight of attentive, convincing poetry and wry wordplay. The Silos have created a sound that's hard to pin down - “The band's austere style inflects the astringent twang of The Velvet Underground with the drone of R.E.M. and adds countryish echoes that recall Gram Parsons," offered The New York Times. Their latest effort and 12th studio album “Family” was released in 2022 and work has begun on a new album to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2025. Growing up just outside New York City, I began playing guitar in the hallways of my high school, learning the songs of The Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Smashing Pumpkins, and Dave Matthews Band. I graduated, went to college for a communications degree, and finished feeling way more inclined to make music than anything else, so I hit the road. In these past 15 years, I’ve played in every state in the U.S. and toured extensively throughout Europe. I’ve had the honor of playing with a slew of incredible musicians wherever I’ve gone.&nbsp;I just released my ninth LP, Natural, and I’ve also released three solo EPs as well as a song-a-week project of 2008 called “52”. I also am in three bands that have recorded albums over the past few years -The Open Sea with Rosi Golan, Bluebirds of Paradise with Chrissi Poland, and most recently a duets album with Judy Collins called Silver Skies Blue, which was nominated for a Grammy award for “Best Folk Album” of 2017.&nbsp;Sometimes my music is heard on TV or in movies – The Path, The Lincoln Lawyer, Private Practice, Army Wives, and One Tree Hill to name a few. Once Phillip-Michael began guitar lessons, the significance became so clear that he shied away from soloing and most things blues. Instead, he fell in love with songwriting wen an English teacher told him “A great writer can make their reader identify with anyone.” The trouble was he couldn’t find his story in the blues.With a fierce independent streak and a passion for performing, Scales fronted his own indie bands, wrote and recorded his own music, and worked to make a name for himself on his own terms. All the while, his “Uncle B” just smiled a knowing smile and encouraged him to “stay with it.” Their relationship grew closer as Scales began to discover “the blues” in his personal and professional life.When his Uncle B passed away, Scales began incorporating more of the blues into his music as a way to honor him. “These days I’m finding more of my story in the blues. A lot has led me here between politics, my identity, and the idea of Legacy.” The result is a sound he calls “Dive Bar Soul” which takes a bit of indie rock storytelling and couples it with the passion of the blues. His single “Find a Way” has begun attracting national radio attention and he released his debut album, “Sinner-Songwriter” on French Blues Label, “Dixie Frog Records” in October of 2021.His single “Find a Way” attracted national radio attention in 2022 and garnered an invite to perform on the Ellen Degeneres Show. Small shows led to larger shows, which eventually led to regional and then national touring. John played harp and sang in local bands, often opening the show for nationally touring blues acts and quickly caught the ear of established blues musicians. It didn’t take long before he was releasing his own recordings, “The Jack Of Harps” (2002) and “Come And Get It” (2004), featuring Junior Watson, and performing in Junior Watson’s band.

Tickets are nonrefundable.A lot has changed since Americana, acoustic folk artist Mike Mangione left his hometown of Chicago for L.A in pursuit of a music career.&nbsp; At the time, the most common musical advice one would hear was to get out and play often.&nbsp; So, after a year and a half of gigging around L.A, Mangione purchased a van and began a life on the road, sleeping at rest stops and averaging over 150 shows a year.&nbsp; It was at this time, playing as an unknown soloist, that Mangione discovered three key elements of his music: Sonic subtlety, use of silence as an instrument, and patience.&nbsp; Fast forward 18 years, two bands, 8 releases and hundreds of thousands of miles later and these three components continue to make up the foundational pillars of Mangione’s music today.&nbsp; Subtlety, silence, and patience combined with maturation and time has given birth to a woven lush complexity.&nbsp; But it is not only the beautiful ethereal soundscapes that make Mangione’s music so special.&nbsp; It is how he desires to use it.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;“Songs utilize a broader palette through the power of imagery, poetry and mystery,” Mike Mangione, Americana and acoustic folk artist, argues, “to create a complete picture that is accessible to each individual from where they are at in their lives.”&nbsp; Each song is a form of communion between artist and audience.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mangione writes every song with that target in mind, as each song is a “dwelling place you can enter.”Mangione released his sixth full length studio record,&nbsp;Blood and Water, in March 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;The album was produced by three-time Grammy winner, Larry Campbell.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mangione first became aware of Campbell when he was touring with Bob Dylan for seven years.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mangione continued his appreciation of Campbell’s work when he became musical director and collaborator for many years with Levon Helm, another of Mangione’s musical idols. For the album Campbell arranged a stellar band with Justin Guip (Hot Tuna) on drums, Byron Issacs (The Lumineers) on bass, Tom Mangione on electric guitar, and Will Bryant on keyboards and accordion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Larry Campbell also played on the album with guitars, pedal steel, and fiddle.&nbsp;&nbsp;All of Mangione’s previous albums have garnered numerous favorable reviews in the press.&nbsp;Tenebrae&nbsp;(2008), was&nbsp;New York Magazine’s&nbsp;pick of the week.&nbsp; Offering&nbsp;(2010) inspired&nbsp;Blurt Magazine&nbsp;to refer to the “tear-stained folk, Memphis-styled gospel and bluesy-flavored pop” as “luminous.”&nbsp; Red-Winged Blackbird Man&nbsp;(2013) received four stars from&nbsp;American Songwriter Magazine.&nbsp; But I’ve Seen the Stars&nbsp;(2017) was described by&nbsp;No Depression&nbsp;as "a country-blues/indie gem.”Blood &amp; Water&nbsp;is the title and theme of the new record.&nbsp;&nbsp;“All things of significance and value in our lives require a certain level of sacrifice,” Mangione explains.&nbsp;&nbsp;“’We often run from sacrifice and rarely talk about it as being valuable but it is the gatekeeper to most things that lead to a fulfilling life.&nbsp;&nbsp;We should learn to embrace and celebrate sacrifice as a necessary labor to the fruit of our lives.&nbsp;&nbsp;This record reflects on that reality in songs like “Anastasia,” “The Turnabout,” “Love Ain't No Easy Thing,” “Against the Grain” and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;The blood signifies the sacrifice, an open wound, pain and the giving of self.&nbsp;&nbsp;The water represents cleansing, rebirth, growth, life and becoming anew.’”&nbsp; &nbsp;

With smoking grooves, served up with hot harmonica and smooth stinging guitar they play original songs peppered with nods to Slim Harpo, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells and the three Kings.&nbsp;Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, the Reverend has been playing the blues since 1971 when he first saw Freddie King play at the Kinetic Theatre in Chicago. After a 15-year hitch in the Navy, he moved to Milwaukee where he began a long friendship and collaboration with Madison Slim, long time harmonica player for Jimmy Rogers.&nbsp;Since 2015, the band has featured Westside Andy on harmonica. Andy is one of the premier harp players to come out of Wisconsin along with Jim Liban, Steve Cohen, Madison Slim, Matthew Skoller and Cadillac Pete Rahn. Upon graduation from New College in Sarasota, Florida, with a thesis addressing rhythm &amp; blues varieties featuring a hearty emphasis on Louis Jordan and Buddy Johnson, Cebar dedicated himself to trodding the boards in earnest and spent substantial amounts of time testing the waters out New York way while exploring band dynamics with a soul and New Orleans-minded crew called the R&amp;B Cadets back home. The Cadets ranged about from 1980 to 1986 and featured the grand original tunes of John Sieger alongside the winning assortment of B sides and obscurities that were the fruits of Cebar’s research. Concurrently, he kept alive the spark of his solo work with a small group which came to be known as The Milwaukeeans. Throughout the early 80s, this combo featured Rip Tenor on tenor sax, Alan Anderson on upright bass, Robyn Pluer on vocals and Paul on acoustic guitar and vocals, and drew most of its repertoire from ’30s, ’40s and ’50s jazz and R&amp;B.

And then, suddenly, she’s off and dreaming, belly laughing with a distant friend or considering taking up “the work of birds.” When she comes back down to Earth, more often than not, she finds bliss in a comforting middle ground. “There aren’t enough hours in the day, I’ve counted,” Conway sings early in the record, before slyly adding, “For loving you.”Partner&nbsp;is Conway’s first full-length release since 2019’s&nbsp;Surrounded Middle. Wagoner was voted Violinist of the Award in the 2023 Wisconsin Area Music Awards and both are recent inductees into the Madison Area Music Awards Hall of Fame. Details are blurry, it started in the prehistoric, pre-internet, pre-documenting-everything era. The thin days of shoegaze. When all the titans had gone away to have kids or get their degrees or whatever one does when they’ve gone out of fashion. Perhaps it could even be said that Brief Candles only got labeled as shoegaze back in those emo-laden times because they were the closest thing. Maybe because they showed up with pedal boards and delay on their vocals. It’s hard to say, that was many effect pedals ago, hundreds at least. One thing that can be said with certainty is that they’ve always sounded distinctly themselves. Yes, they love shoegaze and post punk. They would never disavow such a thing. There are though, tinges of kraut rock grooves, crunchy 90s indie rock, new wave and psych. All of those things a group of people love, crammed together in various combinations to make music that could be called original, or at least derivative in an honest way. Their new album, “Unfinished Nature”, continues that fine tradition - trying to find that special place the 4 of them exist in.

There is also this other EP they released, called "Live from the Algoma Club" - its a live album - three songs. That one came out in 2020 (not on June 1st). Here is something interesting that happened after "The Diamond Engine" came out: it got over 400,000 streams on Spotify.

"I’m not just making different music now. It feels like I'm breathing in a different atmosphere," she says, reflecting on her evolution from acclaimed roots-Americana band The Stray Birds to her current solo journey. Produced by Maya de Vitry and mixed by Grammy-award winning engineer Justin Francis (Madison Cunningham), The Only Moment(out July 12, 2024) is de Vitry’s 4th full-length record and is an unabashed blend of indie folk, indie rock, and indie pop, with elements of Americana and alt-country.Originally from Lancaster, PA, de Vitry’s 2019 debut Adaptations earned accolades from Rolling Stone Country, NPR Music, and No Depression and she has since attracted an organic and devoted following on the strength of her recordings and her live performances.
