<p>Etran de L’Aïr (or “stars of the Aïr region”) welcomes you to Agadez, the capital city of Saharan rock. Playing for over 25 years, Etran has emerged as stars of the local wedding circuit. Beloved for their dynamic repertoire of hypnotic solos and sun schlazed melodies, Etran stakes out a place for Agadez guitar music. Playing a sound that invokes the desert metropolis, “Agadez” celebrates the sounds of all the dynamism of a hometown wedding.</p><p>Etran is a family band composed of brothers and cousins, all born and raised in the small neighborhood of Abalane, just in the shadow of the grand mosque. Sons of nomadic families that settled here in the 1970s fleeing the droughts, they all grew up in Agadez. The band was formed in 1995 when current band leader Moussa “Abindi” Ibra was only 9 years old. “We only had one acoustic guitar,” he explains, “and for percussion, we hit a calabash with a sandal.” Over the decades, the band painstakingly pieced together gear to form their band and built an audience by playing everywhere, for everyone. “It was difficult. <p>Eluding all expectations of the current alternative rock space, Glixen come from Phoenix, Arizona and have taken their sound coast to coast on tour in North America. As influences, lead vocalist/guitarist Aislinn Ritchie cites My Bloody Valentine, No Doubt, and T.A.T.U. In the same breath, also citing heavier acts such as HUM and My Vitriol. Their music can be described as Americana Rock with a healthy flavor of blues and southern gospel.</p><p>“It feels like a homecoming even though it’s totally foreign” says Chad Henry who is ‘coming home’ to writing songs again after a two decade hiatus. Being a singer and band leader, however, is totally new territory. It’s a role he wasn’t necessarily seeking, but was required after a torrid pace of songwriting in early 2024 following his departure from a corporate career. “Honestly, I thought the part of my life that involved creating original music was over” says Chad. “It’s been a healing process to rediscover how important music is in my life”.</p>

<p>Cinder Well is the musical project of California-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Amelia Baker. The music unfolds at its own deliberate pace, with tension building in ways reminiscent of bands like Bell Witch. Rather than relying on distortion, the weight and resonance of Cinder Well's music comes from its deep lyricism and expansive arrangements.</p><p>Amelia Baker’s musical roots trace back to the DIY anarcho-punk scene in Santa Cruz, California, where she was a member of the cult folk-punk band Blackbird Raum. Her exploration of folk-punk led her to Ireland, where she immersed herself in Irish traditional fiddle music and ballads. Cinder Well’s first two full-length albums were recorded at The Unknown, a converted church studio in Washington, and received critical acclaim, particularly No Summer (2020) for its stripped-down, introspective sound. The 2023 album Cadence, recorded in Venice Beach, California, explores themes of grief, time, and nature with a richly layered sonic palette. <p>“Play on, there’s no such thing as better days,” Damien Jurado sings on “Roger,” the sweeping wash of a song that opens Reggae Film Star, his 18th full length album and second release from Jurado’s own Maraqopa Records label. But as he enters his 25th year as a recording artist, it’s clear these are, at the least, very good days for Jurado on the creative front. In these 12 songs, which evoke half-recalled dreams and overheard conversations, the cosmic rushes headlong into the autobiographical and specific moments on the clock fade from past to future to scenes set only in the eternal now.</p><p>Playing out like a backlot documentary filmed on the location of an unnamed TV or film set—maybe a sitcom taping, or perhaps it’s a low budget science fiction B-movie, or could it be a talk show?—the album is populated by performers awaiting call times, camera operators praying for their shot, and studio audiences rapt with anticipation. The stars here eschew glitz and glamor. <p>At the dawn of 2017 Devin Champlin brought a couple of his original songs to Dean Johnson with the invitation to sing in harmony together. That proved to be joyful, and they tapped Sam Gelband to join in with his sturdy baritone to be the middleman. Quickly this bore fruit, so they invited Charlie Meyer along for the ride with his lovely bass playing skills. At that, The Sons Of Rainier were born.</p><p>Devin Champlin has been writing songs since he first picked up a hand-me-down guitar at the age of twelve. Through his teen years and early twenties he found his cultural home in DIY punk music and skateboarding. At some point in there he picked up his dad's banjo more often than not and spent over a decade learning, playing and performing different styles of traditional American folk music, mostly Acoustic Blues and Southern Fiddle Tunes. He toured the country numerous times with acts like The Gallus Brothers, and The Crow Quill Night Owls, collaborating occasionally with elders of the scene and even being inducted into the Jug Band Hall Of Fame (yes that exists). His personal songwriting was always percolating inn the background, making sporadic appearances at house shows and the like. With The Sons Of Rainier, Champlin found a loving home for many of these songs where they could be nurtured by the hands and voices of his compadres. The arrangements rest on the foundation of Devin's songwriting, and is brought forth with warm tube amps, Dean's unpredictable, weeping guitar lines, a loosely tuned snare, upright bass, and close three part harmonies. It is 45 rpm folk music that is sweet and haunting. It's a polaroid of a stolen slow dance.</p><p>In 2018 the band released Down In Pancake Valley. Recorded live over two summer days in Bellingham, the album is filled with nostalgic lyrics brimming with longing, and understanding that float over a relaxed, lo-fi couch of sound. <p>LSD and the Search for God hit the Northern California coast in 2005––seemingly from another place and time––dosing San Francisco with hypnotic shows built upon swirling guitars, otherworldly drones, fuzzed-out pop melodies, and dreamy vocal harmonies.</p><p>With reviews of early shows and recordings drawing comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Yo La Tengo, Spacemen 3, and Sonic Youth, the band quickly developed a must-see reputation within the underground psychedelic music scene.</p><p>When LSD finally released their self-titled debut EP (Mind Expansion Records, 2007) it sold out from the record label prior to the official release date. It earned critical acclaim and continues to frequently appear on lists of essential shoegaze releases. The EP was twice reissued on vinyl (Deep Space Recordings, 2008, 2015), twice on cassette (Cellar Door Tapes, 2015), and selected tracks were featured on three compilations: Mind Expansion Vol. 1, M.E. Vol. 2, and Australian nugazer compilation Take Me on the Wildest Spree (Rubber Records/EMI, 2008).</p><p>LSD's most recent release, Heaven Is a Place (Space Age Recordings, 2016), captures a snapshot in time soon after Ricky Maymi (Brian Jonestown Massacre) temporarily joined the band on drums. Like the self-titled EP, it garnered critical acclaim and frequented many Best Of lists. <p>Based in Philadelphia, Blau has a legendarily broad résumé. He has worked on 250 albums during the last three decades, his experience ranging from Earth and Microphones to Laura Veirs and Matthew E. White. And his own catalog has forever been that of a polyglot, bending funk and folk and pop and punk into experimental forms with total glee. To call Vultures of Love the culmination of all that is to imply some stopping point, as if this is some destination Blau has now reached. But he moved to Philadelphia in part because he likes to be part of music that is going somewhere, that is seeking some frontier. <p>Hillstomp is a 2-man band comprised of Henry Hill Kammerer and John Johnson. Henry plays guitar and banjo like a hurricane, and if you close your eyes you’d swear he’s playing 2 parts at once. John Johnson beats mercilessly on his drums, with the fury of a demon loose from hell. Once you get past the pure ferocity of his playing, you notice the parts are intricately crafted patterns that provide the framework for Kammerer’s guitar and banjo sorcery. </p><p>The whole thing started as a love letter of sorts to North Mississippi blues played by the likes of RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. It first caught on in college towns like Eugene and Olympia, but soon bigger cities got it as well. The band stayed there for a few years and then started to morph - adding banjo and writing more and more of their own music. The fast and loud songs kept coming, but now they were interspersed with ballads and slow-burners to give the sweat-soaked dancers a chance to breathe. They have set out on national headlining tours, tore their way through Europe a few times, and opened for many of their heroes along the way. </p><p>Hillstomp sounds like a boom box blasting from a shopping cart. Two madmen have strapped an engine to the cart and it’s too big and running too hot. They've got a banjo and a megaphone, a washboard and a kick drum. They've stocked the cart with guitars, buckets, car parts, and microphones and they are hurtling towards a blown out bridge while the bad front wheel flaps manically. The fools think they can jump the bridge and land safely on the other side. They are very wrong but no one has told them because...well, they just seem so happy. And there you are, bouncing alongside them and deep down you hope they make it. <p>Rose City Band’s country psychedelic rock, led by Ripley Johnson (guitarist and vocalist for Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo), evokes the American west's wide-open spaces and free spirits. Initially focused on "porch music," the band now thrives as a live ensemble featuring pedal steel guitarist Barry Walker, keyboardist Paul Hasenberg, bassist Dewey Mahood (aka Plankton Wat), and drummer Dustin Dybvig. Their album "Garden Party," recorded at the Center for Sound, Light, and Color Therapy in Portland and mixed by John McEntire, celebrates summer's communal gatherings and nature's beauty. With contributions from Moon Duo bandmates John Jeffrey and Sanae Yamada, the album captures the energy of a live band with radiant guitar interplay and driving rhythms. <p>Duster is a reclusive experimental electronic slowcore(?) band consisting of two multi-instrumentalist members — Ewing Clay Parton and Canaan Dove Amber. Parton sometimes appears as "E. Parton," "C. Parton," or "Clay." Amber sometimes appears as "C. Amber," "D. Amber," or "Dove."</p><p>The band formed when Parton and Amber started recording themselves on cassette four-track machines at home in the mid to late 1990s. They released a few records between 1997 and 2000, and then took a brief break until 2018. In 2019, they released a self-titled LP on Muddguts, and Numero Group reissued all their previous records as the "Capsule Losing Contact" box set. <p>Nekromantix, formed in 1989 in Copenhagen by Kim Nekroman (formerly Kim Gaarde), is a psychobilly band known for their fusion of punk rock, rockabilly, and horror-inspired themes. Nekroman, originally a Danish Navy submarine operator, built a signature coffin-shaped upright bass and developed the band's unique sound. The band has released nine studio albums, including their U.S. debut Return of the Loving Dead in 2002, which helped establish their presence in North America. Their music, characterized by energetic performances and dark humor, has made them a staple in the psychobilly scene.</p><p>Though the lineup has changed over time, with Nekroman as the only constant member, the band continues to tour and release music. Notably, Nekroman also collaborates with his wife, Patricia Day, in the rockabilly band HorrorPops. <p>Tsunamis had one of Chile's most explosive musical debuts in 2004 being the first Chilean DIY / independent band to be featured on Mtv, becoming a major exponent of the alternative new sounds of the region, causing a deep impression that has stretched across decades.</p><p>The post punk project Tsunamis, created by Berlin based / Chilean artist, songwriter and noise-maker Goli Gaete O'Ryan invokes raw, noisy electric guitars to the likes of The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Sonic Youth and Spacemen 3. Ignited by all of rocknrolls history including subtle songwriting, germinated from folk, drones and ambient-experimental music, Tsunamis 20 + year career is as diverse as the many collaborators with whom Goli Gaete has worked with. Some of them include his lifelong Tsunamis partner Pancho Fernández also from Los Tábanos Experience, Seba Ilic drummer for Panico, Yajaira, the renowed Ana Tijoux and Colombina Parra, amongst many others.</p><p>Working together with BYM Records since 2014, Tsunamis latest Double LP " 7 Mares" was released Xmas 2020, an album that would go on to win the 2022 Pulsar Award for Best Rock Artist. His low, guttural baritone, often foregrounded in the mix, adds a dramatic tension to the music, oscillating between dark, claustrophobic production and lighter, more open moments.</p><p>Nichols' innovative approach also honors the roots of the blues. On tracks like his rendition of Blind Willie Johnson's "You're Gonna Need Somebody on Your Bond," he intertwines gospel influences with a contemporary edge, maintaining a connection to the past while pushing the genre forward. The album's standout track, "The Fatalist Blues," raises existential questions about fate and free will, reflecting Nichols' struggle to define his individuality in a world that often feels constrictive. <p>Dion Lunadon is a New Zealand-born musician and songwriter best known for his role as the bassist in the influential noise rock band A Place to Bury Strangers. Prior to his work with APTBS, Lunadon was a member of the New Zealand garage punk band The D4, where he played guitar and provided vocals. His music is characterized by its raw energy, aggressive sound, and a blend of punk, rock, and noise elements. Lunadon also embarked on a solo career, releasing his self-titled debut album in 2017, showcasing his intense, high-octane style. <p>SF based band chokecherry is dark, black widow energy wrapped in the foil of our generation. Self-produced with a head rush of garage band sonics overlaid with a siren ensemble of layered vocal poise, “Glass Jaw” puts an original fingerprint on a historic scene. This being just their debut single, the song amassed over 1 millions streams on Spotify without a single editorial playlist. With their second single, “Around Around Around,” the duo continued to show they are paving their own way with a fusion of influences including shoegaze, classic rock, and grunge. <p><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">A new trio to deliver a mix of free improvisation and punk, all of it</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">wild-eyed and fierce as hell. Guitarist Joe Baiza (Saccharine</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">Trust, Universal Congress Of) and bassist Mike Watt (Minutemen,</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">fIREHOSE, Stooges) both need no introduction, but if you insist:</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">they're defining figures of the 1980's California hardcore/post-punk</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">scene and did as much as anyone to expand the music into something</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">beyond categorization, pulling things in from all over the imaginary</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">genre-map, including free jazz's improvisation and exploratory fervor.</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">Drummer Chris Corsano (Rangda, Björk, Bill Orcutt) came up in a world</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">heavily indebted to Baiza and Watt, fully embracing the ethos of "Punk</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">is whatever we made it to be." He's brought that approach to free</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">improvisation/experimental/etc. since he came on the scene in the late</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">'90s. Flash forward to late 2023 when the trio first met out in the</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">Mojave Desert. They cut an album for Yucca Alta records (due out in</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">September), followed by a pair of SoCal shows. Now they're embarking on</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">a West Coast tour.</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">Or, as Watt puts it:</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">"this is mike watt's reckoning of what this is: late last year drummer</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">chris corsano was put w/me for a gig in the joshua tree</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">desert parts (by derek monypeny) and his first suggest was to get joe</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">baiza which I was way into. we did that gig: totally improvised</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">instrumental music. we did it sitting down: chris sitting down, me and</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">joe baiza are sitting down. for me, it's was a very interesting</span><br><span style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34)">conversation to be involved in and I got big time fuckin excited.</span></p>

<p>Cola is a Canadian indie rock band formed in 2020, featuring former members of the bands Ought—Tim Darcy (vocals, guitar) and Ben Stidworthy (bass)—along with drummer Evan Cartwright. <p>The Deslondes’ music is a genre-defying mix of classic country, hobo folk, crust punk, rural blues, Third Ward jazz, rockabilly, and r&amp;b, drawing from a wide array of influences like Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint, George Jones, and the Band. Their sound reflects a freewheeling, anything-goes philosophy born out of their origins as a neighborhood hangout on Deslonde Street. Each member brings their own voice and style to the mix, creating a rich, diverse sound that is both fresh and deeply rooted in American musical traditions.</p><p>Despite lineup changes and years on the road, the band’s bond has only strengthened, giving their music a sense of comfort and commitment. The addition of New Orleans musician Howe Pearson has reinvigorated their sound with upbeat rhythms and harmonies reminiscent of their early days. <p></p><p>Balkan Bump is the global electronic music project orchestrated by trumpet player, producer and ethnomusicologist Will Magid.</p><p>Balkan Bump’s music blends heavy electronic production with global influences, featuring traditional Balkan brass melodies, Middle Eastern sounds, and American hip hop. The live shows range from solo performances to a 12-piece band with diverse instruments like the sitar, saz, oud, clarinet, and trumpet, gaining global renown at major music festivals such as Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The project debuted with the single “Aymo” featuring Gramatik and Talib Kweli, with Gramatik supporting the live show and releasing Balkan Bump’s debut EP on his Lowtemp label. Balkan Bump has collaborated with artists such as Beats Antique, Moon Hooch, CloZee, Fakear, Manic Focus, and The Gift Of Gab, and has been featured in major publications like Billboard Magazine and NPR. <p>“Holding a guitar, it’s my comfort blanket,” says Joshua Hyslop, the Vancouver-based folk-pop artist.
