I try to create honest, common sense understanding with my songs.”Toronzo Cannon was born in Chicago on February 14, 1968, and grew up in the shadows of the notoriously tough Robert Taylor Homes. Theresa’s Lounge, one of the city’s most famous South Side blues clubs, was close by. As a child, Cannon would stand on the sidewalk outside the club’s door, soaking up the live blues pouring out, while trying to sneak a glance inside at larger-than-life bluesmen like Junior Wells and Buddy Guy. He also heard plenty of blues records growing up in his grandfather’s home, and listened to soul, R&amp;B and contemporary rock on the radio.Cannon’s sister gifted him his first guitar at age 22, and his natural talent enabled him to quickly master the instrument. Although his initial focus was reggae, he found himself increasingly drawn to the blues. “It was dormant in me. But when I started playing the blues, I found my voice and the blues came pouring out.” He absorbed sounds, styles and licks from Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Hound Dog Taylor, B.B. King, Albert King, Freddie King, Jimi Hendrix, J.B. Hutto, Lil’ Ed Williams and others. Although influenced by many, Cannon’s biting, stinging guitar sound is all his own.From 1996 through 2002, Cannon played as a sideman for Tommy McCracken, Wayne Baker Brooks, L.V. Banks and Joanna Connor. But he was determined to prove himself. In 2001, while continuing to work as a hired-gun guitarist, he formed his own band, The Cannonball Express. By 2003, he was working exclusively as a band leader. His first three albums—2007’s My Woman (self-released), 2011’s Leaving Mood (Delmark) and 2013’s Blues Music Award-nominated John The Conqueror Root (Delmark)—document his rise from new kid on the block to promising up-and-comer.Cannon fulfilled that promise with the 2016 release of his Alligator Records debut, <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.alligator.com/albums/The-Chicago-Way/">The Chicago Way</a>, with his maturity as an artist on full display. Host, musician, and author Richard Barone, who will moderate the discussion; David Browne, senior writer at Rolling Stone; renowned historian Stephen Petrus; and&nbsp;author&nbsp;Terri Thal, who was at the center of it all as wife&nbsp;and manager&nbsp;of Dave Van Ronk and first manager&nbsp;of&nbsp;Dylan, will engage in lively conversation, each from their unique perspective. He teaches the course “Music + Revolution” at The New School’s School of Jazz &amp; Contemporary Music, and hosts Folk Radio on WBAI New York.&nbsp;David Browne is a senior writer at Rolling Stone, where he has written cover stories on the Grateful Dead, Whitney Houston, Robin Williams, and Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes. He is the author of eight books, including biographies of Sonic Youth and Jeff Buckley. His latest book is "Talkin' Greenwich Village: The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America's Bohemian Music Capital," a decades-spanning history of the scene that has its roots in his years as an NYU student and club-goer long ago.&nbsp;Stephen Petrus&nbsp;is Director of Public History Programs at LaGuardia and Wagner Archives at LaGuardia Community College.&nbsp; He received his Ph.D. in history from the CUNY Graduate Center.&nbsp; At LaGuardia, he has co-curated six exhibits, including&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.laguardiawagnerarchive.lagcc.cuny.edu/EdPrograms/LGBTQ_Exhibits.aspx?Exhibit=1986-Gay-Rights-Bill">The Battle for Intro. 2</a>&nbsp;on the struggle to pass the gay rights bill in New York City from 1971 to 1986.&nbsp; He held Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships at the New-York Historical Society and at the Museum of the City of New York, where he curated the exhibition&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://global.oup.com/academic/product/folk-city-9780190231026?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;">Folk City: New York and the American Folk Music Revival</a>&nbsp;and co-authored the accompanying book.&nbsp; His most recent publications include a chapter on Lou Reed's song "Dirty Blvd." in the book From Broadway to the Bronx and an essay on singer-songwriter Eric Andersen's album The Shadow and Light of Albert Camus in the book Mingle with the Universe.Terri Thal was at the center of the Greenwich Village folk scene, as confidante and manager to Dave Van Ronk, Bob Dylan, Maggie &amp; Terre Roche, the Holy Modal Rounders, and others. A campaigner for social justice, Terri went on to work for not-for-profit organizations. Her new book is 'My Greenwich Village: Dave, Bob and Me.

Over the course of a career that dates back to 1994, he has been a force of to be reckoned with on the guitar, and his tempestuous, soulful playing has never been more powerful. An imposing figure with a shaven head, tattooed arms, a goatee and a performance style he describes as “the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson,” Popa Chubby is an endearing character who is one of the genre’s most popular figures.His career has always been about moving forward and carving a place for himself in the imposing terrain of the music business, overcoming odds to continue growing and maturing as a creative force. He has built a constantly increasing base of fans across the world, where in many territories he is a star. A native New Yorker, Horowitz’s first gigs were in the NYC punk scene as a guitarist for what he reflects was a “crazy Japanese special effects performance artist in a kimono called Screaming Mad George who had a horror-movie inspired show.” Right from the starthe was immersed in rock ‘n’ roll as theater, and learned from George and others playing CBGB’s at the time that included the Ramones, the Cramps, Richard Hell, whose band, the Voidoids he joined that rock ‘n’ roll should be dangerous. He reflects, “Musicians like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols weren’t just bands. They were a threat to society.”The Blues however was the foundation of his playing style. He recalls, “Since I’d grown up on Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin, when I started playing blues in New York clubs I understood that the blues should be dangerous, too. It wasn’t just from playing in punk bands. Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters were dangerous men. They’d cut or shoot you if they thought it was necessary, and Little Walter packed a gun and wouldn’t&nbsp; hesitate to use it. That danger is a real part of the Blues and I keep it alive in my music.”Popa Chubby is his own man for better or worse. He reflects, “I’m living in a wild time, and that is where the inspiration is drawn from. There are my issues, but the picture is much bigger than me and my situation. Everything is breaking down in the world. The lines are being redefined. We all need something.”

Golden Dimes is the collaboration of five suburban dads, all lifetime musicians, brought together by fate and a mutual love of great food and drink, good humor, and positive vibes. The band recently wrapped production on their third EP, entitled HELICOPTER. Offering a modern take on classic Yacht Rock, the Dimes purvey smooth, mellow rock featuring lush production, vibey grooves, and sophisticated melodies. The band returned to Restoration Sound in Brooklyn NY for this set, produced by Jason Spiewak (Ian Flanigan, Ernie Halter, Pat McGee) and Lorenzo Wolff (Taylor Swift, Steve Earle, Randy Newman). The music was mixed by Grammy-winner Craig Alvin (Kacey Musgraves, Little Big Town, Will Hoge) at Noble Steed Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Golden Dimes offer music carrying messages of unity, self-awareness, and responsibility thoughtfully viewed through the lens of people who are old enough not to be young, but young enough not to feel old. A Philadelphia musician who proudly carries a torch for the city’s soul legacy, Mutlu makes a connectionwith every audience.Coming up in the Philly scene, he played around town and in area clubs before landing his first touropening for Joe Jackson. Since then he’s toured across the U.S. and Europe with his musical brother,Amos Lee, who discovered Mutlu’s music just as both of their careers were taking off. In addition he’sfound an advocate with Daryl Hall &amp; John Oates, who invited Mutlu to support a national theater tour.Mutlu (pronounced moot’-lu) is a first-generation American whose parents moved from Turkey to theUnited States in the 1970s. He discovered the strength of his voice in high school while singing in aBroadway revue. He liked being on stage but didn’t anticipate pursuing it as a career. However, whileearning a marketing degree from Drexel University, he spent innumerable hours practicing guitar, writingsongs, and playing open mic nights. Nick Cassarino Presents: &nbsp;Americana 808s Debuting new original music, new genre, new life, Cassarino throws down in New York.Nick Cassarino was born into a musical family from Vermont who believed in the healing power of music.&nbsp; He grew up listening to James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Steely Dan, Bob Marley and Earth Wind and Fire. &nbsp;In high school he began studying jazz intensely.&nbsp; He began composing music and performing at premier venues in Burlington VT with his group, The Nicholas Cassarino Ensemble.&nbsp;At 22 he took a leap of faith and moved to New York City to pursue music.&nbsp; It was here that he honed his chops in gospel churches and night clubs.&nbsp; He joined a 10 piece Hip Hop collective called the Lifted Crew and they became the touring band for hip hop legends Slick Rick the Ruler and Big Daddy Kane.In 2013 his electric church soul rock project, ‘The Nth Power’ was formed in New Orleans. A folk singer who Thrives off storytelling, his writing of stories is personal and touching in for what life can bring.&nbsp;His Irish roots are visible throughout his performances around New York City, a mix of Irish folk, American folk and cult classics there is always a little something for everyone.
