The latest offering from Psymon Spine (Noah Prebish, Peter Spears, and Brother Michael Rudinski) out on Northern Spy is a gritty, punchy, guitar-forward studio record from a band obsessed with production. “It’s more unhinged than anything we’ve made before,” says Prebish, adding, “Throughout the writing process, we were always asking ourselves how we could make it really fun to play live.” The end result is a little Sonic Youth, a little YMO, and basks in the glow of early 2000s New York-based dance punk and electroclash. If you were to ground it in something more current: Kevin Parker meets Spirit of the Beehive. It features contributions from Deradoorian, Liquid Liquid, and Sabine Holler, as well as recently inducted band members Zebadiah Stern and Sarah Aument.As Psymon Spine was writing Head Body Connector in 2020, the world was experiencing extreme earthly and psychic disruption, as if we had collectively jumped from one timeline to another, stranger one. A battle with clinical anxiety disorder and prescription drug abuse, which came to a head in 2019, had dimmed the light within. The man who once seemed to ooze spontaneity was now creatively adrift, stumbling along in the fog.In December, he entered a program and, for the first time in a long time, a path toward healing began to emerge. He began to see that inner peace was possible, even with the world outside raging.A few months later, in February, a tornado came and decimated East Nashville, his adopted hometown. Covid-19 took root just days later, changing lives forever. In the early days of his recovery, a different reality was beginning to take shape, both within and without. New worlds were being born; old worlds were dying.Knowing he was struggling to write songs and make sense of it all, Slim was finally able to flesh out a throwaway ditty one afternoon. His close friend Mike then suggested he try penning a song a day. Slim didn't like the idea, but he gave it a shot.To his surprise, the songs came. In a flurry of stream-of-consciousness writing, the new tunes tumbled out, one after another, like little starbursts of joy, gifts from the gods you might say. Slim was tuning out the noise and finding beauty in the madness of a world coming undone. Over the course of a couple of months from March to May, Slim penned more than twenty that were certified keepers. Out of this bumper crop came the songs that make up his new album, Strawberry Mansion, which is being released this winter on Dualtone Records."I wasn't sitting on the songs and I wasn't overthinking them," Slim says of the writing process of those months. "Something cracked open with the slowing down and the stillness of quarantine.After finishing a song, whether he liked the tune or not, he'd call Mike, a videographer, and they'd record it and post it to Instagram. It was a form of therapy, he now realizes. "There was nothing precious about the process and it was a bonding thing between me and Mike as much as anything else," Slim says. "It also gave me a release and maybe some potential form of healing, and was an opportunity to not always listen to the shitty thoughts in my head. I wasn't ever thinking that I was writing songs for a new record."Prior to this creative outburst, Slim's anxiety had grown so acute there were times when he actually feared picking up his guitar and trying to write. With the help of therapy and friends, he was now learning to confront his demons rather than run from them. So, in the midst of a panic attack one day, he picked up his guitar and the song "Panic Attack" was born. It's a raw, off-the-cuff number that rises above the dark subject matter with spirit, irony and humor. "I called a healthcare professional/ Wanna speak to someone confidentially/ Don't know just how I'm feelin'/ But I'm feelin' feelings exponentially," he sings.Album-opener "Mighty Soul" details a world beset by Biblical-grade plagues (coronavirus, the Nashville tornado) and government malfunction. It ultimately calls for healing through community and the recognition that we can all make a difference. It functions as the album's spiritual center, a secular gospel number for all mankind."Morning Prayer" is inspired by the songwriter's effort to pray for the first time in his life. "It's not in the key of any one religion," Slim says of the number. "For this, I'm grateful that my guitar was unknowingly yet appropriately out of tune. It's a song to help me practice compassion, surrender, connection to nature, the spirits and beyond."The second part of "Morning Prayer" is one of the most affecting moments on Strawberry Mansion, with the singer reaching out and offering prayers for his loved ones who are struggling, for all of humanity, really. "For my friends who suffer/ For my mother, father and brother/ For a world down on its knees/ I pray for thee," he sings with great poignancy.The road to Strawberry Mansion, which was recorded at Daylight Sound in Nashville with longtime compadres Paul DeFigilia (Avett Brothers) and Mat Davidson (Twain), began in 2019 with Slim's decision to get sober. Even though the singer-songwriter kicked alcohol years ago, the insidious monster of addiction had crept back into his life in different guises. The last straw came during a road trip with a friend, who, at the end of the journey, let it be known that the man he knew and loved was no longer recognizable. So Slim called his manager and loved ones and soon checked into a program. That experience and his ongoing recovery program have given him a framework for grappling with the personal demons that have always skulked in the shadows, and helped him find light in the void. "It's important for me to talk honestly about these things, because I feel it gives me strength, and it might help others along the way." he says.Strawberry Mansion is the singer-songwriter's seventh full-length album. He released his first record, Electric Love Letter, back in 2004. Since then he has graced the stages of Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and the Conan O'Brien show, winning fans over with his heart-on-a-sleeve sincerity and rousing live shows.Born Sean Scolnick in 1980, Slim took part of his artistic moniker from his hometown of Langhorne, Pennsylvania, a place he's still very much connected to despite making his home in Nashville. Since the advent of Covid-19, he has been traveling back to PA once a month to see his mother and grandmother, and, like many Americans, finding strength in his origins and family bonds. The title Strawberry Mansion refers to the neighborhood in Philadelphia where both of his grandfathers grew up, a place he calls "dirty but sweet, tough but full of love, where giants roamed the earth and had names like Whistle and Curly." That idea of a mythical wonderland informs the new album from head to toe. Strawberry Mansion is not so much about nostalgia for the past as it is about the possibility of better days ahead in this world. These are songs that remind us we're all part of a collective "Mighty Soul," united in one journey, just like the characters in that old Philly neighborhood. The band does not perform note for note recreations of traditional music, but&nbsp;combines&nbsp;these forms&nbsp;with Western influences&nbsp;to create a hybrid of the traditional and contemporary, that is both exotic and familiar.&nbsp; In addition to their many performances on stage and various media entities, Namaste has recorded a critically acclaimed CD, “Namaste-Colonial Pagoda”.&nbsp;Lynn Stover served with the Peace Corps in Tunisia, where he fell in love with the people and the culture. He learned to sing in Arabic and play the darbouka, a ceramic drum which is prominent in North African and Middle Eastern music.Dave Moyar, long fascinated by African-American music and culture, played electric bass in R&amp;B and funk bands.&nbsp;Julian Aguirre, a guitarist raised in Montevideo. Julian grew up with the rhythms of South America and the influence of electric guitar heroes like Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa.&nbsp; His interest in the roots of this music exposed him to African artists and grooves.Jose Canto Cruz, a Latin Percussionist born in Puerto Rico joined Namaste in early 2023, bringing a new level of excitement and musicality by adding Afro Cuban and Afro Rican rhythms.&nbsp;Trixi Greiner is a teacher and multi-styled keyboardist/accordionist who records and plays with many local bands including her original band Inca Campers, Irish band "Whiskey B4 Breakfast," her polka band "Ein Prosit," a funk band "Bunchafunk," and others. She is excited about also playing with World Beat band Namaste.&nbsp;The rhythm section has since been augmented by Dan White. He has played in numerous combos and big bands in south central PA and Maryland, in styles ranging from rock to swing to country and jazz. He enjoys learning new drum set skills and — as a newcomer to Namaste — expanding his knowledge of world music and rhythms.&nbsp; Namaste first played in January of 2023 at Tellus360 to much acclaim and a packed house.&nbsp; The band is looking forward to this return engagement at Tellus360 with an enhanced line-up and lots of energy.&nbsp;The band plans to continue performing and celebrating the similarities and differences of us all through music.

For most of their life, Zzzahara has been looking backward. Raised in LA’s Highland Park neighborhood, their debut album, Liminal Spaces, confronted the changes the community has endured since Zzzahara’s childhood. That sense of loss, coupled with the persistent memories of a painful coming-of-age, led to many late night parties and an avoidant relationship with self-reflection. Liminal Spaces chronicled that ache, but these days, Zzzahara isn’t looking backward much – they’re not even looking forward. They’re just trying to be here, in the moment, as present as possible. Zzzahara’s sophomore album, Tender, released via Lex Records, documents a period of transition following a devastating breakup. Instead of crumbling, Zzzahara began to look inward by meditating and practicing mindfulness. “If I had to describe what my life is like now, I’d say ‘consistent.’ I’m trying to be consistent with everything I do.” Consistency requires tenderness, a willingness to cradle the soft parts of yourself that often go unnoticed. To make Tender, they locked themselves in their studio and subsisted on cold brew for nine to ten hours a day. To most, this sounds nightmarish, but the monastic experience gave Zzzahara a sense of total control over the output. “I learned so much making my first record and I wanted this one to prove that.” Tender thrives on the intimacy created in a home studio. While Tender can largely be considered a guitar rock album, opener “Dust” is a laconic song reminiscent of a mournful 1950s waltz, while the ebullient lead single “Kensington” sounds-off to the sparkling synths employed by the Cure. The immediacy of these pop songs doesn’t detract from the sincerity of Zzzahara’s lyrics. The dazzling guitar part heard on “Girls on SSRIs Don’t Cry” might hide the song’s pathos momentarily, but the chorus is an open-hearted plea to an ex. As its title purports, Tender is a sincere album, but that doesn’t stop Zzzahara, as they put it, letting their “asshole side loose.” It’s easy to recognize the faults in others, less so in yourself. On Tender, Zzzahara is unafraid of the world seeing theirs.

Each song on Ghost Funk Orchestra’s 3rd album,&nbsp;A New Kind of Love, resonates like the soundtrack to a scene from an imaginary movie. The music could score a romantic drama, an action thriller, or a modern twist on a classic film noir. The spare, cascading vocals accentuate the lush instrumental orchestrations composed, performed, arranged and produced by multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum, whose latest brainchild was conceived and conceptualized during The Great Pause of 2020, a time of tension, bewilderment and isolation. Evoking the grooviness of an era which preceded his arrival on earth, Applebaum draws upon sonic devices of mid-century exotica and the succinct but dense arranging style of the leaders of the pop orchestras which dominated the hit parades of the 60s and early 70s. He blends impressions of this bygone era with an expression of his actual experiences as a young filmmaker coming of age in the 21st century, citing influences such as Sharon Jones &amp; The Dap Kings and Antibalas. A New Kind of Love encompasses a reverence for the past without attempting to recreate it. In the tradition of the “production forward” discographies of such record makers as David Axelrod and the Mizell Brothers, it’s easy to visualize Applebaum as a “mad doctor” figure, hunkered down in a studio channeling this musical representation of his inner world into the 12 compositions which make up A New Kind of Love. His writing stretches his psyche to explore a terrain in which to capture emotional notes of love going well, love gone sour, manifesting love songs based in ghostly affairs. While the studio is obviously a wondrous happy place of experimentation and creativity for Applebaum, he’s a band guy too (having actually fronted punk outfit The Mad Doctors). Applebaum has the wherewithal to bring his dreamy material to the 10 piece all star Ghost Funk Orchestra, leading them to breathe life into this sophisticated body of work which heralds the celebration of a new era for the group. Ghost Funk Orchestra will be touring in concert this summer and fall to celebrate the release of A New Kind of Love, an album which is sure to stand the test of time. Ghost Funk Orchestra began as bandleader Seth Applebaum’s lo-fi recording project in 2014. They have been playing as part of New York City’s psych-rock and soul scenes, but have only just recently released their debut album,&nbsp;<a href="https://ghostfunkorchestra.bandcamp.com/album/a-song-for-paul-2" target="_blank" style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.58); color: rgb(148, 148, 148);">A Song for Paul</a>. Five years might seem like a long time from a band’s conception to the release of their debut album, but A Song for Paul is clearly worth the wait. While Ghost Funk Orchestra and A Song for Paul is Applebaum’s project, he uses nearly 20 musicians to realize his vision. The group consistently find the groove while successfully negotiating Applebaum’s detours into some combination of jazz/prog/psych rock that occurs in nearly every tune. A Song for Paul is dedicated to Applebaum’s grandfather, Paul Anish, whose love of music was a huge influence on young Seth. But the spirit of another great music lover/music maker hovers over A Song for Paul as well, and that would be Isaac Hayes. The Hayes connection is obvious in two specific songs.&nbsp;<a href="https://ghostfunkorchestra.bandcamp.com/track/walk-like-a-motherfucker-5" target="_blank" style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.58); color: rgb(148, 148, 148);">“Walk Like a Motherfucker”</a>, the first full track after a short album-opening introduction, establishes the stoned 1970s funk feel that dominates the album. Although there are no backup singers telling vocalist Laura Gwynn to shut her mouth when she gets to that certain word. It seems likely Black Moses would have approved. And then, of course, another track is titled,&nbsp;<a href="https://ghostfunkorchestra.bandcamp.com/track/isaac-hayes-2" target="_blank" style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.58); color: rgb(148, 148, 148);">“Isaac Hayes”</a>, though it does not appear to be literally about Isaac Hayes

From kitchen floors to bluegrass festivals, they have spent much of their life playing and listening to music side by side. Spanning folk, indie, and pop genres, Jordan and Emma’s music is filled with resonant sibling harmonies, rhythmic fiddling, and grooving banjo. Noel Hill was born in Caherea in West County Clare, Ireland, into a big family with 7 siblings. His parents and grandparents were all concertina players. He was particularly influenced by his uncle, Padraig A Chnoic, (Paddy Hill). He lived in a house which was the last house in the area to hold the traditional Irish House dance, where musicians were always welcomed; particularly towards the end of the year when farm work was done. It was at these events that he learned his early tunes, rather than from the radio, books or records. He started playing at 9 and was lucky to have heard endless hours of Willie Clancy, Paddy Canny, Peter O’Loughlin, Paddy Murphy, and Micky Hanrahan. Much of the music in his repertoire today comes from the music he learned as a child from these great players. Noel wanted to be a piper, but pipes were not readily available. He played the concertina which had been initially purchased for his older brother.Noel Hill joined up with Tony Linnane, Tony Callanan and Kieran Hanrahan to form the group “Inchiquin“. They recorded one album. Hanrahan and Callanan then left to form Stockton’s Wing. His most celebrated album is “Noel Hill and Tony Linnane” (1979) with Tony Linnane (fiddle), Matt Molloy (flute), Alec Finn (bouzouki and mando-cello) and Micheal O’Domhnaill (church harmonium). Inchiquin continued with Noel, Tony and Barry Moore (Luka Bloom) and toured Germany. He has been a professional concertinist since the late 1970s. In the mid 1980’s he lived in New York City.His main recordings are as follows: 1) “Í gCnoc Na Graí (In Knocknagree)”, together with button accordionist Tony MacMahon, recorded live in Dan O’Connell’s pub with a group of Clare set dancers in 1985, 2) The Irish Concertina One 1988. It was voted the “Irish Folk Album of the Year” in 1988. 3) “Music of Dreams (Aislingí Céoil)” in 1993, with Tony MacMahon and Iarla Ó Lionáird and I. 4) The Irish Concertina Two 2005 with Alec Finn, Arty McGlynn, Brian McGrath, Liam O’Connor and Steve Cooney.He has toured worldwide including Europe, USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong, and Australia.He teaches concertina at the The Noel Hill Irish Concertina Schools in Ireland and throughout the United States. He now lives with his two children in Connemara in the Irish speaking region of southwest County Galway.Among the many concertinas that he plays, he has a miniature made by Charles Jeffries, which is 2 inches by 2 inches. It was into one of these households that Noel Hill was born, and as a young child Noel was forbidden to touch his older brother’s concertina. But he couldn’t keep his hands off the instrument and was always stealing away with it. One day when his brother was laboring through a hornpipe Noel gave himself away by taking the concertina and playing the tune with ease. That got everyone’s attention, and he’s had it ever since.Noel Hill has taken the humble concertina from the house dances of County Clare on the west coast of Ireland to stages throughout the world. The concertina, like Irish music itself, is currently enjoying a tremendous increase in popularity, and Noel Hill is at the forefront of this movement, not only as an awe-inspiring performer but as teacher and a well respected authority on Ireland’s music. In his hands the concertina is a new instrument, yet resounds with the integrity of generations, for Noel Hill makes the music new not through experimentation in other genres, but through consummate exploration and illumination from within traditional Irish music.

North Carolina’s Sarah Shook sings with a conviction and hard honesty sorely lacking in much of today’s Americana landscape. Always passionate, at times profane, Sarah stalks/walks the line between vulnerable and menacing, their voice strong and uneasy, country classic but with contemporary, earthy tension. You can hear in their voice what they've seen; world weary, lessons learned—or not—but always defiant. They level-steady mean what they say. Writing with a blunt urgency—so refreshing these days it's almost startling—Sarah's lyrics are in turn smart, funny, mean, and above all, uncompromising. The Disarmers hit all the sweet spots from Nashville’s Lower Broad to Bakersfield and take Sarah's unflinching tales out for some late-night kicks. At times, it’s as simple and muscular as Luther Perkins’ boom-chicka-boom, or as downtown as Johnny Thunders. The Disarmers keep in the pocket, tight and tough. The Minks are part of Nashville’s psychedelic music scene, heavy on the rock and roll. We’re talking low-down, all the way, purse-lipped, eyes-shut, head-whirling kind of groove. In 2015, on a search for creative community, Nikki Barber started the band based on the idea that "if you don't create, you'll combust". Just like a rock and roll circus, you never know what you're going to get, but you know it’ll be good. The band’s palpable sound has roots in every music fan’s top ten—from Lou to Patti to Creedence to Hank - but blends them into something totally original and current. Mixed with raw, jangly instrumentation and soulful saccharine vocals, it’s as much a throwback as it is an answer to the often overlooked underbelly of Nashville’s rock and roll scene. It might sound like a punchline, but it’s not. An ace fiddle player, a sharp guitarist, and a singer with a granite twang, he’s devoted his entire life to the study of this genre. Ask him about it and he’ll explain: “When all my friends went off to college, I went to Nashville. I was 19 years old playing honkytonks and getting an education.” His 2018 debut, Mr. Jukebox, showcased his deep knowledge of country’s history, in particular the beery ballads of the 1950s and ‘60s. His mentors were George Jones, Ray Price, and Glen Campbell, but his most remarkable accomplishment was putting his own spin on their style. Hedley has been a presence in Nashville for nearly twenty years, although you have to know where to find him. You have to brave the tourists on Broadway, bypass the three-story bars blasting Journey, and make your way to Robert’s Western World, a time-capsule honkytonk from a different era, an oasis in a town where twang is constantly being run down by pedal pubs.That place informed the sound and style of Mr. Jukebox, which introduced him to a wider audience beyond the city limits and established him as one of Nashville’s most knowledgeable and exciting artists.After making Mr. Jukebox with a loose group of hell-raising friends, Hedley decided to record his follow-up with professional session players—a Nashville tradition. Producers Skylar Wilson (Justin Townes Earle, Lindi Ortega) and Jordan Lehning (Rodney Crowell) corralled an all-star crew featuring some of the city’s best players, who made Hedley step up his game. During the process of co-writing and recording Neon Blue, the singing professor became the student, learning lessons he’ll apply to everything he does next.- Lauren Morrow -After over a decade as the centerpiece of popular Americana band The Whiskey Gentry, Lauren Morrow packed her bags, her dogs, her cats, and husband and moved to Nashville to pursue a career as a solo artist and grow her craft as a songwriter and performer. Within months, she released her first solo EP to widespread critical acclaim and landed on many Best Of year ends lists from Rolling Stone to Garden &amp; Gun, quickly launching her already budding career and sending it into hyperdrive. Over the next year, Morrow filmed an episode for PBS’ Bluegrass Underground and toured the US playing festivals such as Pickathon and Bristol Rhythm &amp; Roots to name a few. Morrow recently wrapped recording her first solo, full-length album at the legendary Nashville studio, Sound Emporium. Mixed by Vance Powell (Chris Stapleton, Jack White, Phish) and Jaquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, Shania Twain) set to release in 2023, Morrow’s new album, People Talk, showcases her flawless vocals and intricate songwriting, but also her willingness to take risks — an edge that makes her stand out from the Nashville norm. Whether she’s singing an alternative/indie rock banger, a classic-country crooner, or a traditional lovesick ballad, there’s a unique impression she leaves that lingers and is unlike anything you’ve heard before.

As a kid, Alex Siegel loved taking care of his fish tank, impeccably arranging the little aquatic world of neon pebbles and decorations just so. The Santa Monica, California, native loved watching the fish swim around their little bubble, a tranquil living diorama. “I loved watching this little world unfold,” Siegel says. On his new solo LP, Courage, the singer-songwriter recreates that feeling, carefully arranging the musical decor at his disposal to revel in the beautiful miniature dreamscape. Siegel’s impeccable ability to rearrange classic building blocks into brand new shapes is readily apparent from the lux album opener “Tea Leaves”. Rubbery bass and chilly new wave synths provide a misty base, slinky guitar and hazy falsetto vocals dripping over the top. Siegel’s lyrical choices build as well, drawing themes and lines from previously released singles and expanding them here. “The song echoes [2018 single] Daydreaming Pilot, and expands a story about longing and nostalgia,” he says. Siegel’s ability to pair precision structuring with emotionally resonant melodies was strengthened by time shared with another songwriter adept at that balancing act: Jim James of My Morning Jacket. In addition to having opened for James with one project, Siegel also had the opportunity to work on a record with the rock hero in the studio. "I'd been a My Morning Jacket fan since high school, so it was pretty amazing to get to know [James] and work with him," Siegel says. It’s clear from tracks like the lithe and groovy “Charlie” that the Venice, California-based multi-instrumentalist is interested in far more than indie rock and Americana. Having grown up playing in jazz bands and obsessing over everything from bossa nova to hip-hop (and even toured on keyboard with Malian guitar legend Vieux Farka Touré), Siegel is unafraid to incorporate unexpected elements into his tracks. Riding a breezy rhythm, “Charlie” is a touching tribute to Siegel’s childhood dog—though his empathetic songwriting makes the sweet track easy to connect a variety of experiences to. “If I had to summarize/ You brought something more to life,” he sings, the warm memories carrying just past the pain. After spending the beginning of his time as a solo artist mainly releasing singles, Siegel began collecting stray songs over the last couple of years with the idea of fitting them together into an album. “I knew it was going to be called Courage because that’s the key to any project,” he says. “Especially in music when you face so much self-doubt, you just need to have the courage to share this little world you’ve built.” Hunkered down in a spare bedroom, Siegel began experimenting with the frameworks of songs inspired by everything from Chilly Gonzales and Kings of Convenience to Joāo Gilberto and Neil Young. Having played almost every part on the album and recorded largely in the home he shares with his girlfriend, there’s an incredible intimacy to Courage; his classic pop melodies laze in a lush production cloud. Siegel began writing and producing songs as a teenager, tinkering with Ableton and producing electronic music and hip-hop beats. But for Courage, he leans heavily on floating, flowing arrangements. “Fluidity and improvisation were key to writing these songs,” Siegel says. The gauzy “Misty Eyes” plays on that duality, swinging hammock bass and vinyl crackle riding over a plonking drum machine. On “See Ya”, Siegel borrows from a Thai melody, doubling it with blurred vocal effects and smacking snare drum. “I was inspired by a famous Thai song called ‘Duen Pen’,&nbsp;which my friend Nicole had shared with me before she passed away,” Siegel says. That same friend inspired a single last year, “See Ya” acting as a sort of echo to “Sangsuree”. Always building on what came before—both his influences and his own art—Siegel can’t help but compare the art-making process to his childhood pursuit of crafting grand, immersive visions in miniature. “It’s like being a kid and building a house out of blocks, or building a sandcastle. It takes courage to share that imagination with the world.
