All movement – and consequently, a lot of art – is a product of tension and release. In 2017, when multi-instrumentalists Nina Cates and Zack James decided to begin writing songs together, it was an exercise to see whether they could collaborate and anyone would be interested in anything they came up with. Now, Robber Robber’s debut album, Wild Guess, feels more like an exercise in tension and release than an indie record. For all of its nods to its post-punk predecessors and the eclectic Burlington, VT music scene that fed into it, the album feels more like an attempt to translate imagery into sound, communicating all the shades of light and dark you could visualize – and it’s better for that reason.Everything is driven by sheer curiosity and loose, if any, creative parameters, the band says. A person’s twenties is guaranteed to be a tumultuous time in their life anyway, regardless of who they are or what they do, but the members of Robber Robber found themselves in a world that’s maybe never been more chaotic or difficult to move through. It’s a chaos that’s evident in what they create, even if it’s only the obstacle they’re reacting to. Soon after wrapping up a whirlwind tour booked with the mission of spreading their newfound message of radical love, co-founders Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg immersed themselves in the feverish writing of songs that turned their frustrations and fears into irrepressible hope, all while reaching far beyond their bluegrass roots and forging a fiercely joyful sound unbound by genre convention. By the time they’d completed that process of musical alchemy, the New York-based husband-and-wife duo had profoundly refined the band’s vision and voice and arrived at the unfettered radiance of Beacons: an epic double album affirming Nefesh Mountain as a singular musical force—one whose deeply impassioned songwriting awakens us to new ways of navigating an endlessly troubled world.Self-produced and mainly recorded at Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville, Beacons expands on the soulful intentionality Nefesh Mountain have brought to their music since forming a decade ago. “We live in such strange and divided times, and while we wanted this album to be a full-on celebration of American music, one of our main goals was to bring love, hope, and positivity into a world that sorely needs it,” says Lindberg. “In the end we made a choice: instead of getting mad, we just made music.” Although much of the album stemmed from their rumination on the political landscape (political polarization and division throughout the U.S., the Israel–Hamas War, and Russo-Ukrainian Wars), its spirit of purposeful optimism is made all the more potent by Nefesh Mountain’s willingness to speak about their most intimate struggles and triumphs, including the birth of their now-three-year-old “miracle baby” Willow and Zasloff’s journey with sobriety. “This is definitely the most personal album we’ve ever made, which was a big leap for us,” says Zasloff. “At some point it became obvious that if we’re going to really open our hearts, we need to talk about things we’ve never shared before, with the hope that it’ll end up helping others.” The result: a selection of lived-in and truly revelatory songs, each providing a beacon-like transmission of uplift and light.The follow-up to Songs for the Sparrows—a 2021 LP praised by Rolling Stone as a “master class in string music”—Nefesh Mountain’s fourth full-length effort encompasses two distinct discs, the first of which blurs the lines between Americana, blues, country, and psych-folk, offering up an electrified sound created with the help of their longtime live band and guest musicians like pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz (Beck, Joni Mitchell, Willie Nelson). Meanwhile, the second disc to Beacons finds the duo working again with legendary roots musicians Jerry Douglas (on Dobro), Sam Bush (mandolin), and Stuart Duncan (fiddle) and serving up an all-acoustic lineup of songs spotlighting their boundary-pushing form of bluegrass. “Bluegrass has an energy that’s so intense and invigorating, and for this album we wanted to take that even further,” says Zasloff. “There’s a whole ocean of sounds styles that we’ve always loved but denied ourselves for so long,” Lindberg adds. “Finally we decided to throw out the rulebook and play whatever we felt like playing, as long as it’s true to us.”One of the first songs penned for Beacons, “This Is Me” graces the album’s first disc with a wildly galloping, harmony-fueled anthem that captures the pure glory in fully owning your truth. “Over the years I’ve had a lot of people ask me how a Jewish kid from Brooklyn ended up loving bluegrass, but there’s really no answer—you can’t help but be who you are,” says Lindberg. “Because this album is essentially about declaring our bigger purpose, it felt right to start the whole thing off by exclaiming who we are and what we believe in. More so than any religion, we’re about trying to bring people together and find some common ground at a time when there’s so much hate.”Another song celebrating the beauty of carving your own path, “Race To Run” takes the shape of a magnificently rambling piece of country-rock laced with plenty of fiery guitar riffs. “This song came from feeling like we’re all part of this rat race and competing against so much noise out in the world and on social media,” says Lindberg. “It’s about remembering what’s really important for each of us—and once you realize that, you’ve already won.” From there, the first disc to Beacons shifts into the soul-soothing grooves and spellbinding fiddle melodies of “Another Way,” an emphatically hopeful track threaded with Nefesh Mountain’s fable-like yet true-to-life storytelling (from the second verse: “I come from ‘cross the ocean/Lost my earthly goods to the waves/Could’t tell if I was drowning/Or if I was being saved/Good thing the sea ain’t whiskey/And I’m not a diving duck/Those days are long behind me/Thanks to grit and a little luck”). “This album is the first time I’ve ever shared the fact that I’m 20 years sober,” says Zasloff. “It was scary to open up about a moment when I was in real trouble, but it felt like it was finally time to talk about it.”In the process of embracing their most adventurous instincts and charting new sonic terrain, Nefesh Mountain also dreamed up tracks like “Heaven Is Here”—a fast-stomping and free-spirited number that taps into their blues and gospel influences, unfolding in luminous piano lines, exultant harmonies, and a bit of scorching slide-guitar work from Lindberg. “‘Heaven Is Here’ is another beacon song that speaks to the experience of living in this moment and in this world,” says Lindberg. “It’s suggesting that while maybe there’s a heaven or an afterlife, it’s also possible that we have all that we need down here on Earth.”Kicking off the bluegrass half of Beacons, “Regrets In The Rearview” surges forward on dizzying banjo lines and pulse-quickening rhythms as Nefesh Mountain channel the blissful freedom that comes with hitting the road and finding faith in yourself. “‘Regrets In The Rearview’ is also a beacon song, a reminder to stay present and keep moving forward instead of dwelling on the past,” Lindberg notes. Next, on “Better Angels,” Beacons takes on a gripping intensity as the duo present a quietly powerful call for unity and peace (from the final verse: “We can feed the lion and the dove/Be messengers from the mountain top/But if it doesn’t start with love/Who knows when it’ll stop?”). “The initial inspiration behind ‘Better Angels’ was the conflict and crisis in Israel and Gaza and the overall rise in hate we’ve seen over these past few years—it’s incredibly heartbreaking,” says Lindberg. “This song, of course, is also referencing the great quote from Lincoln, which makes it even more poignant for us here in the U.S., a country that’s so divided.” “For me this song is about finding the best parts of ourselves,” Zasloff adds. “We need to somehow figure out how to not hate each other, even if we vote, pray, or see this beautiful world differently.”At every turn on Beacons, Nefesh Mountain showcase their rare gift for transmuting raw emotional outpouring into songs that illuminate the mind and ease the soul. To that end, the bluesy but ebullient “Mother” documents Zasloff’s experience of motherhood with equal parts unflinching clarity and unstoppable joy, arriving at an anthem of indomitability for women everywhere. “Eric and I spent seven years trying to have a baby, which was a very crazy and complicated situation,” says Zasloff, who also has two older children (ages 20 and 18). “It made me feel even more compassionate toward anyone who’s trying to become a parent, so I wanted to write a song about all the different versions of moms out there in the world.” One of the album’s most bittersweet tracks, “Little Longer” brings both tender confession and poetic observation to its heavy-hearted meditation on the relentless passing of time. And on “What Kind Of World,” Beacons achieves a hypnotic grandeur as Nefesh Mountain deliver what Lindberg refers to as “a full-on rant against the darkness of the world.” A shining example of their masterfully expressive musicality, “What Kind Of World” centers on sorrowful strings, rumbling drums, and wistful piano melodies as Nefesh Mountain take stock of the surrounding chaos, ultimately building to a heartrending revelation at its closing lyric: “It’s not for me, it’s for my little girl/’Cause when I look in her eyes I find the pearl/She rides wild horses in her own little world/It’s not for me, it’s for my little girl.”With its tracklist also including standouts like “Man Of Manzanita” (a high-spirited tribute to late bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice, a longtime musical hero for Nefesh Mountain), Beacons radiates so much life-affirming gratitude and wonder even in its most pensive moments—a direct reflection of the deepened sense of purpose they discovered in the late-2023 tour that preceded the album’s creation. “At the time it felt like the whole world was crumbling and we had no idea how to make use of ourselves—all we could think to do was get in the van and try to put some love out into the world,” Zasloff recalls. “Every night it became clearer that we needed to keep being intentionally radical with our acceptance and love, because that’s what brings people together. In a way it might sound soft, but it actually takes a lot of effort to make that choice. This album helped us understand that, and helped us find the strength to keep making that choice again and again.”

The creator of Medium Build possesses a connective charisma that shows in his songs and performances—which can seem like equal parts concerts, testimony, and stand-up comedy. That gift and yearning for connection has been amplified during a transformative season for Nick. In 2023, Medium Build signed with slowplay / Island Records, toured with Lewis Capaldi, and reached the Billboard charts for the first time collaborating with X Ambassadors. Life was pulling him away from his home, dog, and sense of belonging in Anchorage to Nashville. Nick spent his drives looking, listening, and reflecting. This inner and outer journey led to Country, the thematic album draws from Carpenter’s roots as much as it considers his future—while exploring genre. His music is as vast and unique as his backstory, but “if you slow all of my songs down, they’re just three-cord bummer Country tunes,” he admits. Evident in the video single “Cutting Thru The Country,” this collection packs for a trip that explores wide open spaces, musical frontiers, and oneself.Medium Build began as the name Nick Carpenter attached to four-track recordings a decade ago. The storyteller applied aspects of a middle-class church-going Georgia childhood and a Tennessee education to truths learned along the way—ultimately delivering the queer extrovert to find a community in Alaska. There is duality and dichotomy in Medium Build’s life and music—but it is drenched in authenticity. The music has endured, resonated, and connected with a growing base. “Now I’m realizing that my career can last longer than five seconds and I can kind of just breathe and show one thing at a time,” Nick shares. His dynamic catalog mirrors the people who have shown up in his corner: Elton John, Boygenius, John Mayer, and Noah Kahan, to name a few. 2019’s somber and synth-tinged “Be Your Boy” and 2022’s therapeutic “Never Learned To Dance” are fan favorites amid the kaleidoscope of sounds and moods. Country seems much more focused, even if birthed by uncertainty.Now in his thirties, Nick says he only recently learned about his father’s poor rural South Carolina upbringing. As a result, Country music was something Nick’s dad covered up—along with the poverty and corresponding shame of his past. “I had no sense of identity as far as place,” the artist admits. Lately, the father and son began talking about the past and sharing Country tunes—exchanging culture and heritage. As an understanding of his DNA developed, perhaps the twang and American in Medium Build’s songs stood out. However, his Country is something unsurprisingly personal. “It feels self-soothing,” Nick says of the opener, “Beach Chair,” which is a love letter to self in a time of need. “Crying Over U” is deeply specific but conjures emotions in us all—when confronted by closure and what remains in the rearview.Written on the road, Country was fittingly recorded on Nashville’s Music Row. Carpenter and creative partner Jake LiBassi, aka Laiko, embraced experimentation. “We made the album we wanted to make,” he says joyfully and confidently. “It’s so easy to get back in touch with yourself if you can throw off the heavy cloak of duty and just do something that feels good.” At a time when people take the same photo a dozen times in search of a curated aesthetic, Medium Build captures the snapshot. The lyrics and the spirit of Country embrace both wandering and wondering. “I want this to feel lived-in,” Nick says. “It’s sort of me finding a defined place.”&nbsp;On his new album USA, Chicago-bred singer/songwriter Petey bares his soul about all the endless things that keep him up at night. As he muses on everything from masculinity to anxiety to the very nature of human existence, the Los Angeles-based artist drifts between warmhearted sincerity and delightfully warped humor—a deeply affecting dynamic that also defines the absurdist alt-comedy that’s earned him a massive following on TikTok. Built on his idiosyncratic but viscerally charged breed of alt-pop/rock, Petey’s Capitol Records debut ultimately brings a gloriously strange convergence of comfort, catharsis, and unrelenting joy.The follow-up to his 2022 debut Lean Into Life, USA finds Petey working with co-producers John DeBold (Wallows, Remi Wolf) and Aidan Spiro to piece together what he refers to as “an origin story of a typical American male in their 30s.” While the album includes decidedly autobiographical tracks like “Home alone house”—a real-life account of getting busted smoking weed on the beachin eighth grade—Petey’s songwriting often takes the form of impressionistic vignettes revealing the sheer depth and scope of his inner world. On “I’ll wait,” for instance, he delivers an explosive piece of pop-punk whose lyrics offer a candid perspective on mental health. “It’s a song from the mindset of an anxious man who’s acutely aware of the resources available to him, but for whatever reason decides to just wait it out,” Petey explains. “There’s some recognition that doing nothing will make the problem drag out longer, but there’s also an understanding that the uncomfortable moment will eventually end—just like everything else in life.”Mainly recorded at Gold-Diggers Sound in L.A., USA came to life with equal parts intention and spontaneity. “For me making music has always been like throwing spaghetti at the wall, and working with John and Aidan allowed me to be reckless and experimental while giving each song the care it deserved,” says Petey, who plays guitar, bass, drums, and synth on USA. “It helped me fulfill the only real goal I had for the album, which was to make sure every single song would be super-fun to play live.” To that end, “Family of six” unfolds in dance-ready grooves as Petey shares a fantastically surreal meditation on gender expression. “We hear so much today about toxic masculinity, so the idea behind that song is trying to reclaim masculinity in a way that’s actually positive and helpful,” he says. “Each stanza is imagining a parallel universe where the laws of physics are different, and therefore I’m the best version of a man that I could be.” On “Did mention I’m sorry?,” USA takes on a combustible urgency as Petey captures the kind of all-consuming insecurity that tips into self-indulgence. “It’s about someone who’s so self-conscious that it becomes almost narcissistic, because they can’t stop obsessing about their own anxiety,” he says. And on “I tried to draw a straight line,”Petey cycles through a whirlwind of existential questions, offsetting the track’s uneasy bewilderment with sweetly lilting rhythms and majestic guitar work. “That song’s an overview of my mental state when I’m over-analyzing everything,” he says. “It ends with wondering if we’re living in a simulation, and all the paranoid but also calming thoughts that come with that.”At turns philosophical, introspective, and wildly playful, the lyrics to USA mostly emerged as Petey hiked the trails surrounding an abandoned gold mine in the San Gabriel Mountains. “Hiking has become a really good creative vessel for me,” he says. “Once you get used to a trail it becomes second nature, which leaves space for your brain to think in different ways.” A longtime musician who previously played drums in Chicago-based indie-rock band Young Jesus, he first started writing songs at the age of 27 after making his way through a series of dead-end jobs. “I never earned more than minimum wage, and I never felt like I was capable of exceling at anything within the realm of American capitalism,” he says. “But then I wrote a song and put it on Spotify, and that somehow ended up being the thing that worked.” A bittersweet but exuberant breakup song, Petey’s debut single “Apple TV Remote” soon led to his signing to indie label Terrible Records, who later released Lean Into Life and helped pave the way for his signing to Capitol Records in 2022.With the release of USA, Petey hopes that exposing his deepest neuroses might have a liberating impact on the listener. “So much of life is out of our control, which is really scary, but hopefully these songs will help people feel a little better and less alone in their struggle,” he says. “I hope everyone can find some kind of solace in recognizing that life is incredibly complicated for everyone—so instead of spending too much time ruminating on a mistake you’ve made or something that went wrong, maybe the best thing is to go easy on yourself and let it go.”

Ever since Sean Bonnette and Ben Gallaty formed AJJ back in 2004, it’s felt like the world has been playing catch-up. That’s because the band—completed these days by guitarist/keyboard player Preston Bryant, cellist Mark Glick and (relatively) new drummer Kevin Higuchi—has always woven apocalyptic themes and imagery into many of its songs and lyrics. They even self-released a record called Good Luck Everybody in January 2020, as if they knew what was coming. Now though, in 2023, with their eighth studio record and debut on Hopeless Records, Disposable Everything, it feels like the world is finally aligned with AJJ’s doom-laden prophecies – albeit one that still shimmers with hope.

They said it couldn’t be done. Four different songwriters joining forces to form a single band? There was simply no precedent (outside of CSNY, The Beatles, The Traveling Wilburys, The Highwaymen, Monsters of Folk, etc). And yet Fantastic Cat did it anyway, defying the odds and teaming up to record their highly unanticipated 2022 debut, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat. “Do you still believe it?” John Ross asks that question after journeying through the wreckage, after singing of thunder rolling down the track and lighting in a bottle. These are tropes, and he knows it. It’s a moment where he’s returning to the ancient wisdom of his classic rock forebears, trying to find the answers all over again. This is the ground Ross travels in “The Fences Of Stonehenge,” the lead single, opening track, and mission statement of the new Wild Pink album Dulling The Horns. The question reverberates across the album: “Do you still believe it?” And what happens when you don’t anymore?Ross’ response is to start anew. From the late ‘10s through the early ‘20s, Wild Pink was on the classic ascension arc. The otherworldly synth-Americana of 2018’s Yolk In The Fur garnered them press buzz and accolades, while the widescreen gloss and scope of its followup, 2021’s A Billion Little Lights, swung for the fences at the cusp of the band’s breakthrough. Then everything changed: Ross received a shocking cancer diagnosis. Wild Pink’s subsequent release, 2022’s ILYSM, was inevitably saddled with the weight of being an album about mortality and love. On the other side of it all, Ross began to reimagine what Wild Pink was.The genesis of Dulling The Horns goes back to late 2022, when Ross began workshopping new material during soundcheck on the ILYSM tour. Last summer, Wild Pink decamped to western Massachusetts to reunite with engineer Justin Pizzoferrato. Ross decided to record Dulling The Horns live in the room, in an effort to capture Wild Pink’s onstage style — rawer, grainier. Gone are the glimmering atmospherics and studio affectations of recent Wild Pink outings. Instead, Ross’ voice is haggard against the humid distortion coating every song. “I didn’t want to clean up anymore,” he says. “In doing so we’ve arrived at a new place.”After the “digital lacquer” of A Billion Little Lights, Ross had already wanted ILYSM to be more organic and human. But Dulling The Horns takes that prompt further in every way. There will still be occasional synth plinks, sax drones, pedal steel courtesy of frequent collaborator Mike “Slo Mo” Brenner, and even a bit of fiddle. But otherwise, Dulling The Horns is coarse, lived-in, visceral — music intended to be played live, with pounding rhythms and guitars bleeding all over. “I wanted to make economical songs,” Ross explains. “Music that is very much at its core three or four people rocking.” If before, Wild Pink took notes from Springsteen and Petty, they’ve now entered their Crazy Horse era.Greg Mendez is an intuitive songwriter, melodies channeled through ether, a storyteller who across his catalog has chronicled vivid violence and instability — a wallet chain to the head, a crack house arrest, the misdeeds from addiction that hang around like a ghost of past lives — but it's threaded together with love songs, too, with odes to friendship, true dedication, the things that can buoy one through the worst. Mendez has a habit of noticing those things, of finding the light, exacting poetry from even the bleakest, shit-caked situations. In his songs there is an innate ability to balance grit with gentleness, cruelties rewritten through preternatural sweetness, a heart thrumming unendingly, confidently, through the dark.

After nearly a decade in the limelight, constantly jostled by the expectations of his audience, the music industry, and anonymous strangers online, he carved out some time to rest, heal, and reflect for the first time.The result of that unplugged year at home is 2024’s Visitor, a folk-rock record that is intimate, immediate, deeply thoughtful, and catchy as hell. Moreland recorded the album at his home in Bixby, Oklahoma, in only ten days, playing nearly every instrument himself (his wife Pearl Rachinsky sang on one song, and his longtime collaborator John Calvin Abney contributed a guitar solo), as well as engineering and mixing the album. “Simplicity and immediacy felt very important to the process,” he says.This is a return to the approach Moreland took on his breakthrough albums, 2013’s In The Throes and 2015’s High On Tulsa Heat, both of which were largely self-recorded at home with a small cadre of additional musicians. Echoes of these early albums can be heard on Visitor (Moreland makes a passing reference to In The Throes’ opening track “I Need You To Tell Me Who I Am” in two different songs on Visitor), which finds Moreland shutting out the noisy world outside, and the even noisier digital world in his pocket, to reconnect with a muse that’s had to increasingly compete for his attention in the intervening years. Visitor charts his journey back to this muse. If Birds In The Ceiling’s theme was alienation, Visitor’s theme is un-alienation.<h4 style="text-align: start">Tulsa, Oklahoma songwriter Ramsey Thornton is just getting started. His introspective and conversational lyricism mark his welcome to the burgeoning songwriter renaissance. An immediate and gentle warmth in his voice propelled his cover of Paul Simon’s “Graceland” to Spotify’s playlist Bluegrass Covers.</h4><h4 style="text-align: start">&nbsp;However, it is not only in the lyrics, where Ramsey says he “takes note of the overheard,” but in the intricate compositions that accompany them. “Fingerpicking banjo and guitar is central to all of my songs. I pay close attention to rhythmic intricacy,” he said of the music he writes to induce the words. Adding, “Most of the time a guitar or banjo part will come first.”&nbsp;</h4><h4 style="text-align: start">&nbsp;His introduction to music began at an early age with the drums, and he became a multi-instrumentalist in his late teens. At 26 years-old, Ramsey has been writing songs now for a few years, releasing his self-titled EP in 2022. With influences from Nick Drake to Neil Young and Paul Simon, Thornton’s style is decorated with a fun and earnest spirit, turning even the everyday into a touching, beautiful experience.&nbsp;</h4><h4 style="text-align: start">&nbsp;“I often use songwriting as a tool to draw out subconscious thoughts—helps me sort out the things heavy on my mind, even if they’re hanging out in the background,” he said about the songs he writes. Currently his debut EP and some choice covers are available for streaming everywhere. Ramsey signed to La Honda Records in July 2024 with promises of new music.&nbsp;</h4>

In the deep Upstate New York winter of 2022, trees bare and taunting, Nandi Rose found herself searching for an apricitic clarity. She has always found the season difficult; its ruthless theft of birdsong and flora, heavy clouds low and smothering what little light remains. But the cacophonous silence of that winter was particularly brutal. It should have been stirred by the growth of life, a promise of a new chapter, a bright dawn, as Rose learned she was pregnant with her first child. That promise was broken in early December, when stillness took over the ultrasound screen; slow-motion mouths told her the life inside her had ended. Like a snapped branch weighed down by leaden frost, Rose lost a part of her future she thought would blossom.Baldwin tells us we must say yes to life, to “embrace it wherever it is found – and it is found in terrible places – nevertheless, there it is.” This is the guiding force of See You At The Maypole, the sixth full-length album in Half Waif’s prolific catalog. If we look for color in the midst of our own personal winters, the brightness will soon begin to bounce off the snow. Whereas 2021’s Mythopoetics dealt with familial traumas and the patterns we carry with us, Rose––armed with the anticipation of planning her own family––envisioned a new collection of soft and joyous odes to motherhood, and to new beginnings. That writing sparked in the summer of 2021 at a solo retreat in the Catskills, as melodies formed in a small cabin overlooking a luscious and rain-rippled pond. A month later, Rose found out she was pregnant and anticipated nine months of writing through a new, maternal lens, speckled with the verdure of certainty. But when that soundless morning arrived in December, See You At The Maypole took on a new life. One that would seize the uncomfortable reigns of uncertainty.The treatment of a missed miscarriage, as with an at-home abortion, is most effective with the use of two pills: mifepristone and misoprostol. Rose, however, was only prescribed the latter, likely due to FDA regulations on the former. Over the course of the next four months, her body did not recover as it should have. It wasn’t until the spring that she learned she had retained pregnancy tissue and needed an additional procedure, finally allowing her to move forward. “I was literally carrying death inside me,” she explains, “and then my body was frozen.” In that same time, Rose’s beloved mother-in-law was diagnosed with aggressive pancreatic cancer; it felt like the universe was playing an endless, cruel joke. And so, Rose wrote to save herself. Before the sunrise, she wrote in the quiet corner of the would-be nursery while her husband slept across the hall. These were lullabies for no one, whispers dissipating into the fog.While the seclusion of grief feels infinite, Rose brought the songs to her trusted friend and longtime collaborator of the past decade, Zubin Hensler. The pair worked away from others for Mythopoetics, carefully crafting each note and flourish themselves but something else was needed for See You At The Maypole. Rose was learning to loosen her grip on perfection, to splatter the canvas or leave the dropped stitch, and know that it will be beautiful anyway. “How can I take the heaviest material of my life and make it feel like air?” she asked. Live takes, whispered early-morning vocals and distorted phone recordings were all kept. It became a children’s coloring book, broken crayons smudged across the lines.In The Wild Edge of Sorrow: The Sacred Work of Grief by Francis Weller, the author highlights the importance of ritual spaces, and how many communities tend to gather in these spaces when someone has lost a loved one. Though the stem of many of these songs were written in isolation, Rose’s lullabies would soon bloom into a collective calling for anyone experiencing their own personal winter. See You At The Maypole is a room for wailing, not just for catharsis but for connection. Like lung-bursting sing-a-longs alone in the car, notes leaving the open window to be caught by another.&nbsp;“This wasn’t just my story, I wanted to say. It was every story of loss—the loss of a life, the loss of a dream, the loss of trust and hope and faith. A story of finding a way back again,” Rose explains. “My own avenue back to the land of the living was through my relationships with people and with the natural world. It only seemed right that these songs would invite those people in to build the very heart of the sound.” To that end, Hensler and Rose welcomed a wealth of players and friends into the world of the record: Jason Burger and Zack Levine on drums and percussion; Josh Marre (Blue Ranger) on guitar; Hannah Epperson and Elena Moon Park on violin; Kristina Teuschler on clarinet; Willem de Koch on trombone; Rebecca El-Saleh on harp; and Spencer Zahn on upright bass. Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Bon Iver) lent his deft mixing skills to many of the tracks, including lead single ‘Figurine.’&nbsp;New York City-based choir Khorikos adorns several songs, most notably on opener ‘Fog Winter Balsam Jade’ urging a mantra of collective howling. Naming those stomach-prodding reminders of grief but still recognizing their beauty: cutting an apple in the kitchen; watching a bird take flight from the back yard; a morning glory climbing up the corner of the house (‘Collect Color’); a sunset in the rearview mirror (‘I-90’); fog, winter, balsam and jade. The natural world has often been a cradle to Rose––a gentle sway of serenity––but it’s on See You At The Maypole that she had to look to its tougher lessons, and embark on a metamorphosis of her own. “Let me be oak,” she utters on ‘Heartwood’. “I embrace in all directions.”&nbsp;Hensler and Rose recorded some––but not all––at Hensler’s Brooklyn studio, departing the comfort of those reassuring walls and stepping into the constellations of Chatham, NY, Kingston, NY, the St. Anthony of Padua Church in Manhattan, and notably, Imogen Heap’s The Hideaway studio in England. Hidden in the heart of a green conservation area, The Hideaway provided a foundation for moments on ‘Fog Winter Balsam Jade’; the urgent, percussive swells of ‘Ephemeral Being’; the glittering statement of ‘Heartwood’ and ‘The Museum’ –– a languid, uneasy look at bringing life into a crumbling world. There is no shadow without light, and as the strings soar, Rose desperately grasps at the responsibility of motherhood. Sustained, ghostly vocals fill the outro, wrestling with the blessing and insecurity of new parenthood.&nbsp;Dynamic arrangements adorn See You At The Maypole, but there are also moments of simplicity. ‘Figurine,’ a tender ballad written in January 2022, mimics the immobility of pain, but the perseverance of trying to move past it. Rose’s quiet lament of “I love you when it’s snowing, I love you when it’s warm” opens the song, pointing to the seasons of grief, as well as the glimmer of change and growth. “Not everyone will go through a miscarriage but this is a song about how to continue on when you're in a deep, deep sense of loss,” Rose says. “Head up, it’s gonna get so much better you’ll see,” it urges, a chin-up, jewelry box figurine, continuing its dance despite it all.See You At The Maypole is a recognition of personal sadness, and a call to ecstatic togetherness. It’s gathering the colors of our spirit, in all its shades, and making something intricate and remarkable. The ceremonial folk dance performed around a maypole is filled with fauna and flora, with ribbons woven into complex braids incapable of unraveling; these dances are survivals of ancient ritual, honoring the living trees, and the return of Spring and fertility. These patterns––this dance––cannot be completed alone, and so, Half Waif welcomes others to join her, a collective of bleeding color. “We are so much stronger for the colorful experiences we go through,” she says. “That's where we find our humanity and find each other.”&nbsp;

Truly great pop songs do not require a cheery outlook in order to work, nor do they pander to expectations of syrupy sweet easy-listening. Rather, the best pop music is a matter of refinement and pure intention, of dialing groove to melody so that the two might puncture the malaise of everyday living in unison, revealing some brief, sober truth about our shared human condition. On their third LP, Moments of Clarity (Run for Cover), Narrow Head have achieved precisely this feat. Traversing the depths of massive, churning riffs, often distorted to the point of violence, bouncing, lock-grooved rhythms, and crystalline, gorgeously constructed hooks, the Houston-based outfit puts on a masterclass in the art of writing songs that match the pain, pleasure, and confusion of modern living. Each track is sentimental without being precious, heavy without unnecessary griminess, pop-forward without letting the listener off the hook easy: these songs ask for some form of hurt or desire to be paid back to them in return, some promise that the listener is putting equal skin into the game.

“It’s a portrait of who we are as collaborators, as really long term friends and as extended family as well,” leader Emily Sprague says of her band’s new self-titled album. Florist is also the strongest album of the band’s decade-long career, an immersive work that conveys the magic of the earth and of family, and the whole of the band’s heart. It arrives just after the cap of a winding journey. In 2017, shortly after the release of the band’s sophomore record, If Blue Could Be Happiness, Sprague sequestered herself in Los Angeles, thousands of miles away from friends and family, and from the physical void and spiritual crisis left in the wake of her mother’s death. There, she took up surfing and released Emily Alone, which was essentially a solo album released under the Florist moniker. Only after months of self reflection and therapy did Sprague realize that life in a silo is no way to live. That a life directed by fear is not much of a life. “The trauma response to losing my best friend, my mom, was to feel really afraid to get close to anybody ever again,” she says. “It’s sort of cheesy, but I realized that life is better when you share it. The answer isn’t to isolate yourself and be alone.” So she began writing Emily Alone’s companion, the other side of the binary, a record that rings distinctly of Sprague’s tender and poetic spirit, filled with nature and wonder and tears, but without all the loneliness and seclusion. She also adopted a dog, who, she says, “completely changed my life.” “My mind just started exploding with all these thoughts about what it means to live with others, and live with love and care collaboration.” Then, for all of June of 2019, amid a hot and rainy summer, Sprague (guitar, synth, vocals), Jonnie Baker (guitar, synth, sampling, bass, saxophone, vocals), Rick Spataro (bass, piano, synth, vocals) and Felix Walworth (percussion, synth, guitar, vocals) convened in a rented house in the Hudson Valley, to live and work together. It was the first time the quartet recorded that way, and for that long. “In the past we’d meet up for a couple of days, or one day here and there,” Spague recalls. “Living together for a month is a really big part of why the arrangements are the way they are, and also why the instrumentals are such a huge part of the record.” They set up their gear on the screened-in front porch, which looked out onto a canopy of trees, allowing the sounds of nature to play a leading role through out. Then, they experimented. The production and recording of the album directly reflects the organic ways in which the band worked that month, with whispering voices, crickets, rain and birds accenting the aleatoric quality of the instrumentation, each player drawing from the communal energy of the woods and their interpersonal bonds. Poignant, guitar-centric meditation “Red Bird Pt. 2 (Morning)” carries on Sprague’s concern with love, loss and the natural world. “She’s in the birdsong/She won’t be gone,” she sings of her late mother, proffering a merciful sense of resolve. “Feathers” finds her facing her fears over threads of bowed guitar while “Dandelion” meditates on the beauty of our finite existence, pairing synth and fingerpicking with the spirit of Emily Dickinson. “Sci Fi Silence” occupies a liminal space between soul baring confession and contemplative new age, a swirl of analog synth that culminates in a full-band meditation. “You’re not what I have, but what I love,” the band sings over and again until the words grow into a kind of mantra, a thing that at once pierces and heals. The quartet played through muggy days and breezy nights, and often impromptu. “In between working on songs specifically, somebody would be sitting on the porch playing a little instrumental piece, and somebody else would be in the kitchen making dinner and stop, and go to the porch and pick up a random instrument,” Sprague explains. These creative bursts became the album’s ambient instrumental bridges, like “Variation” and “Jonnie on the Porch,” gentle moments that portray their life together in that particular moment. The bells heard throughout the album are from a collection housed in the rental, the animals were their neighbors. The result is 19 tracks that feel like the culmination of a decade-long journey, their fourth full-length album, but the first deserving of a self-titled designation. “We called it Florist because this is not just my songs with a backing band,” Sprague explains. “It’s a practice. It’s a collaboration. It’s our one life. These are my best friends and the music is the way that it is because of that.” After making the record they always knew they could, together, as one, Sprague could no longer live on the west coast without her band and blood. So, she returned home. Last year, she moved back to The Catskills to be closer to her father and her creative collaborators. She misses surfing, but finds peace in the area’s natural landscapes, and through a strengthening sense of physical reconnection. “A goal is to share the band’s connectedness and relationship, but also how we’re all connected,” she says. With Florist, Emily is no longer alone.Lily Seabird is a perceptive songwriter who can channel moments when everything feels raw andoverwhelming into something healing and galvanizing. JP Harris was born shortly, and fortunately, a few minutes before Valentine’s Day 1983 in Montgomery, Alabama. Within a handful of years he was wearing a green velour tracksuit and leading a large Doberman around for street credibility, at the young age of three. He had a charm and strut that would take him far, so the grown folks said; but roughly a decade later, on the opposite side of the country, he would leave his family’s home late one summer night with no designs on fame, fortune, or clothing endorsements, never to return.&nbsp;He had an inkling that the eighth grade was enough education for where he was headed, and set a course for Anywhere, USA.Turns out he was right.

As a person in long term recovery from addiction, Myles sings and screams songs about grief, mental health, addiction, navigating identity, relationships, and cartoon lore. Born in 1953 in Detroit, Michigan, Marshall Crenshaw learned to tune a guitar correctly at age ten and has been trying ever since. His first big break came in 1978 playing John Lennon in “Beatlemania”, first as an understudy in New York, then in the West Coast company, followed by a national touring company. Removing himself from that situation in Feb. 1980, Marshall settled in New York City. Enthralled by the hyper-diverse musical culture of the City, and the local Rock scene in particular, Marshall formed a Rock and Roll band with brother Robert on drums and Chris Donato on bass.After crossing paths with the great and legendary Alan Betrock, Marshall recorded his debut single “Something’s Gonna Happen” for Betrock’s Shake Records label; at nearly the same time, legendary Rockabilly singer Robert Gordon’s recording of Marshall’s “Someday Someway” was released as a single on the RCA label. These two records simultaneously broke big on New York’s WNEW-FM, causing Marshall and his trio’s local popularity to explode.And so began a career that’s spanned four decades, 13 albums, Grammy and Golden Globe nominations, film and TV appearances (Buddy Holly in “La Bamba”) and thousands of live performances. Stimulation is easy to come by these days. Streaming platforms and social media offer us endless fleeting moments of diversion that keep what we call the “pleasure zones” of our brains lit up morning till night. But for such a supposedly hedonistic time, real pleasure—the kind that feeds our soul rather than draining it, that makes us feel good instead of just distracting us from the fact that we feel bad—is in shockingly short supply.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The second LP by Brattleboro, Vermont’s THUS LOVE is full of that kind of nourishing euphoria. It swoons, shakes, and swaggers with a combination of grit and sensuality that’s been hard to locate in music lately. It fills your brain with barbed melodic hooks that once they sink in don’t budge. It punches at the clouds and makes you want to do the same. It’s called, fittingly, All Pleasure. The album came out of a period of dizzying growth and transformation for the group. When they began work on it, vocalist/guitarist Echo Mars and drummer Lu Racine were still reeling from the runaway success of their 2022 debut full-length, Memorial—a set of lush, elegant post-punk that brought praise from The FADER, the NME, and the Guardian, plus a leap from quiet Brattleboro to stages across the US and UK—along with processing the departure of founding bassist Nathaniel van Osdol. Meanwhile, new bassist Ally Juleen and guitarist/keyboardist Shane Blank, longtime musical partners, had uprooted their lives to relocate to small-town Vermont and join a band that was a month away from recording the follow-up to a cultishly adored album. “We were all coming together to make this new thing and take a new step,” Mars says. “We've all been making music for a while, and we’ve all been confronted with aspects of it that are grueling and not pleasurable.” When the group convened in a barn in the woods that Mars had transformed into a recording studio the band calls her “Hobbit Hole,” they kept one simple rule at the forefront: “If it's not joyful,” says Mars, “don't do it.” What emerged from that simple mission is a stunningly gorgeous album, full of big, arcing melodies and a whole range of kinky stylistic twists that will surprise listeners who know the group just for their first album’s chorus-drenched 80s-style psychedelia. “Birthday Song” gives grungy glam rock with a stride that’s new for the band, but fits them perfectly, via a transcendent hook that underlines Echo’s lyrical tribute to communal joy. “Get Stable” transmutes existential panic—“I can’t get stable / Is that what I’m afraid of?”–into sharp-angled punk pop. The anthemic title track—the last song written for the album, and the first to be written by the entire quartet—is something like the album’s mission statement, with Echo and Ally splitting vocal duties as they pay tribute to the power of joyful creation: “I ain’t high but I feel good,” Echo sings, “Like a drug but I don’t come down.”&nbsp; Mixed by Matthew Hall and Rich Costey (on “Birthday Song”, “All Pleasure”, and “Get Stable”) and mastered by Bob Weston,All Pleasurewas recorded as live as possible, with a bare minimum of overdubs, capturing the sheer infectious ecstasy that comes from a group of people sharing space together, making a divine racket. On top of being just a great album, it’s also a persuasive argument for ditching the algorithm, going off the grid, and finding a barn to hole up in with some friends and a bunch of instruments. On “House on the Hill,” Echo sneeringly sums up the empty feeling of living for nothing but likes: “Anything for convenience / anything for the gram,” she sings. “It feels like we’re never gonna get out of here.” Put on All Pleasure, tap into the energy and the message that THUS LOVE is putting out, and you just might find an escape.

On the porch of her one-time Nashville home, Liz Cooper had a multimedia project that combined two of her loves: lips and cigarettes. She painted her own lips with red paint and kissed a canvas two or three hundred times, later dotting them with the detritus left behind in ashtrays by her friends. An overlap of intimacy, indulgence, cheekiness, and sensuality, the piece complements Cooper's roiling second record, Hot Sass. Over jagged, frenetic guitar parts, Cooper sets expectations aflame with the record's title track. Her songs unfurl like smoke spiraling off an incense cone late in the afternoon, with Cooper pushing deeper into psychedelic openness, punk ferocity, and beyond.On new album Longest Day of the Year, Dari Bay is a perpetually shifting art project posing as songs, an ongoing thought experiment disguised as a band. Burlington, Vermont-based artist Zachary James launched Dari Bay as a solo vehicle in 2015, acting as sole songwriter, producer, player of every instrument, and exacting architect of how each sound was placed. Early output was raw and often unhinged, but Longest Day of the Year finds Dari Bay assuming a new form as James folds his experimental spirit into what at first appear to be neutral, unassuming tunes.When Nashville based singer/songwriter Mark Sloan records albums, he takes the word “solo” seriously…and literally. He’s a true Renaissance man, one who plays every instrument, pens the tunes, produces/engineers the proceedings and releases the results on his own imprint. Call him a one man band or the definitive do-it-yourselfer but Sloan—who goes by the barely concealed pseudonym of Slark Moan—gives new meaning to the concept of indie. He’s truly independent of many pressures generated by the music machine that other, often lesser talented artists, are subject to. All of which explains why the uniquely titled Superstition for the Consumer Romantic, his sophomore full length, took about a year and a half to craft.

On Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind, the kaleidoscopic full-length debut from Kate Bollinger, entire worlds lie in the small details. “When I’m recording a song,” the Charlottesville-born, Los Angeles-based songwriter observes, “my indication of whether it’s worth pursuing is if I’m seeing a movie in my head to go along with it.” Blending classic pop songcraft with scrappy punk instincts, Bollinger casts a collage-like vision that’s instantly memorable and uniquely mystifying. Ranging from homespun folk songs to warmly rendered psychedelic rock—like early Rolling Stones as fronted by Hope Sandoval—the resulting album can feel like flipping through your coolest friend’s record collection, finding a new favorite song with each discovery. In order to summon this majestic blend of styles, Bollinger spent years cultivating material, challenging herself to work with new collaborators while moving across the country from her native Virginia to California. Evolving the hermetic approach of her early EPs and solo performances, she arrived at a fuller sound based on intuitive responses and in-the-moment energy. “I came to this realization that most of my favorite music is the result of friends, or players who have known each other a long time, coming together and playing live in the room,” she observes. Armed with endless hooks and wildly shifting textures, Bollinger can seem as much like a songwriter as an art-house auteur, crafting the soundtrack and scenery for a non-existent movie. (Fittingly, Bollinger studied film in college, and she also directed the striking music video for Jessica Pratt’s recent single “World on a String.”) Several highlights from the record were co-written with Spacebomb Records mastermind Matthew E. White, such as the jangle-pop gem “Any Day Now” and the theatrical “I See It Now.” After months of writing in Richmond and Los Angeles, Bollinger traveled to upstate New York to record with producer Sam Evian (Big Thief, Blonde Redhead, Cass McCombs), with whom she developed a similar kinship. Alongside her longtime friend and drummer Jacob Grissom, she formed a group of tight-knit collaborators able to match her wide-ranging inspiration, spanning from ’60s icons like Françoise Hardy and the Velvet Underground to ’90s touchpoints like No Doubt and Pavement. "In some way, this album feels like my musical debut. I feel that I’ve finally been able to express all sides of myself in one record." For Bollinger, the connective tissue between this disparate material is often unspoken but always deeply felt. “Songwriting is kind of like dreaming,” she explains. “They both tend to reveal to me what I don't yet consciously know. I thought of the album title before most of the songs were written, but it became a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way that tends to happen in a lot of my music.” As a lyricist, Bollinger expresses herself through subtle imagery and surrealist stream-of-conscious narratives, allowing listeners to arrive at their own interpretation. When she touches on the rise and fall of romantic relationships, there is an almost therapeutic quality to her writing. In the lilting, empathetic “To Your Own Devices,” she follows a sunswept melody to deliver a series of hushed, second-person observations: “Now you’re in a pinch/The mirror makes you flinch,” she sings. “And all this time, were you not making sense?” In the baroque swirl of opener “What’s This About (La La La La),” Bollinger and her band conjure a sense of cartoonish whimsy that places her in league with the mystical pop greats of the Elephant 6 Collective, a scene whose idiosyncratic spin on the classic rock era helped inform the patchwork sprawl of her record. In sharing this music with listeners, Bollinger took inspiration from her own formative encounters with art: quietly worshiping the early musical projects of her older brothers, attending local shows in Charlottesville and feeling empowered to write songs of her own, inheriting burned CDs from older classmates and finding a portal to another world. (Working with her friends Emma Collins and Evangeline Neuhart on the visual accompaniment, Bollinger assures the entire project feels equally communal and intuitive.) Some endings have clarity. You graduate. You breakup. You leave a job. You board a flight. Others are harder to define. The boundaries of a particular period are amorphous and resist delineation.&nbsp;The Ending Of An Age, the debut album of Austin-based Holy Wire, pieces together such an era through fact and fiction. Through fuzzy synth hooks, glassy guitar tones, and self-conscious crooning, Holy Wire takes inventory of a personal history, drawing up a map of an era of life and negotiating with all the starts and ends therein.&nbsp;Holy Wire is the project of Alain Paradis. Towards the end of the pandemic, Paradis relocated from Brooklyn to Austin, going through a break-up and giving up drinking within the first month. Alone and sober without friends, family, or community, in an unfamiliar city barely beginning to emerge from lockdown, Paradis’ songwriting turned towards reflection, spurred by the process of grieving a life he left behind.&nbsp;At its least auto-biographical, The Ending Of An Age‘s titular track describes fear fantasies of love during a planetary crisis, where the era of human dominion comes to a close. But elsewhere, in tracks like Other Lives and Twenty Six, it’s a farewell to the golden age of youth and all its faded potential. In songs like Worse For Wear and A War I Never Win, it’s a rumination on love in the past, and an acceptance of its lasting imprint on the present.&nbsp;The production is high-energy, relying on propulsive drum machines and swaggering post-punk basslines to cut through the tide of melancholy. Frenetic sequencers weave throughout, recalling Vince Clarke-via-LCD Soundsystem. Lyrically, The Ending Of An Age favors earnest sentiment over irony, but delivers a wink and a nod by pitting its somber lyrics against danceable synth-pop.&nbsp;Holy Wire joins a small but growing local scene for synth music in Austin, playing alongside local breakout acts Urban Heat and Haunt Me, and fitting more broadly into the ranks of modern bands excavating the recesses of 80s post-punk and cold-wave to create their own vehicles for expression; bands like Black Marble, Teleman, Automatic, Nation Of Language, and late-night TV titans Future Islands. In less than a year performing, Holy Wire has shared the stage with The KVB and New York minimal wave act Xeno And Oaklander. The Ending of an Age was released on June 5, 2024. Holy Wire can currently be found playing shows in Austin and expanding their radius of touring outside of Texas.Dutch Experts was born out of the Covid Pandemic amidst the crumbling of societal infrastructure. This destruction mirrored singer/songwriter Hannah Hoffman’s own experiences during lockdown. Turning one of her lowest and most challenging points into a revisitation of her approach to sound, Hoffman began experimenting with layering synths and electronic drum beats in Garageband, creating a sonic landscape that bore the fruits of Dutch Experts and the creation of a debut EP, ‘Bound by This’. Inspired by her personal challenges, the gothic landscape of The Cure, and melodic choices informed by Kate Bush and Cocteau Twins, Hoffman locked into a sound that became uniquely modern yet captured an 80s sonic sensibility: synth pop with a darkwave edge. Recorded, mixed &amp; mastered by Mikey Allred (All Them Witches, Inter Arma), Dutch Experts' debut EP, 'Bound By This' released on February 24, 2023, available both digitally and on vinyl.

It’s a resume almost anybody in country music would be proud to have. Butdespite all of this, the GibsonBrothers are not yet household names.Their latest album,“Darkest Hour,” produced by dobro master Jerry Douglas might just change that.As soon as you hear Leigh singing withAlison Krauss [“I FeelTheSameWayAsYou”] on the new project you realize that his voice is as good as anyone inmusic today.Add the brother harmony to that and they have something trulyunique.While “Mockingbird” featured gorgeous production, recreating the sound onstage was difficult. “We put together a little band to go out and try to recreate it,” Erictold me, but we couldn't.We would have to have such a huge band to try to recreate thatrecord, but we did the best we could.”Douglas—who has won 14 Grammy awards and backed up everyone from RayCharles to PaulSimon and George Jones—wanted to make a record they could actuallyplay on the road. So he picked the best songs (out of dozens) and squirreled them awayin Sound Emporium’s Studio B.But then the pandemic hit. “We did our last shows inMarch of 2020,” Eric told me. “We were inNashville the week everything was shuttingdown. It was surreal, but Jerry was like, ‘Guys, the world's going crazy. We wanted to see what hewould do with us as singer-songwriters.We respect him that much. Some of my favoriterecords are Jerry Douglas produced records. He didn’t disappoint.”If the Gibson Brothers had stayed in Nashville in 1999 they might possibly beGrand Ole Opry members by now. At the very least they would be hit songwriters onMusic Row. But, just like their buddy Del McCoury, they chose family over success(McCoury was in his 50s when he moved to Nashville and didn't really see majorsuccess until he was approaching 60).All they need is someone to shine a light onthem.Their talent level is well-established, the only producers they have ever workedwith are Ricky Skaggs, DanAuerbach, David Ferguson andJerry Douglas. I dare say notmany musicians can stack up a list of producers that strong. For theGibson Brothersthough, they just want to keep writing, singing, and standing on a stage
