I start with sketches: Who are the characters? What are they doing? I write some words, sketch some more. As I change the words, I change the pictures. As I change the pictures, I might decide to change the words again. I put everything on the wall so I can see the whole story. The process can take months.”“Art for picturebooks is sequential art; one picture leads to the next. I make dummies of the books to see how the illustrations work as I turn the pages. Do the surprises occur when I turn the page?”“Until 2010 I worked with water colors, acrylics, water color crayons, pencils, and pens. And then I discovered Photoshop and Wacom tablets. Why use a computer? I can move characters around and I can change colors without having to redo the entire illustration. Sol y Canto is the award winning Pan-Latin ensemble led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and percussionist Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist, singer and composer Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice and Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and inventive compositions, Sol y Canto is known for making their music accessible to Spanish- and non-Spanish speaking audiences of all ages. On occasion the group is accompanied by virtuoso musicians from Latin America and the U.S.Sol y Canto’s original songs are distinguished by poetic, often quirky lyrics set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. They can make you dance, laugh, cry and sigh all in one concert. Their arrangements of classic and contemporary Latin tunes are always fresh and original. Next Stage Arts and Twilight Music present multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and singer Keith Murphy with The Band Of Amber (Ty Gibbons, Anand Nayak, Richie Barshay) and their special guest Jenna Moynihan at Next Stage on Friday, April 11 at 7:30 pm. Since their debut performance at Next Stage in June, 2024, the quartet has expanded its repertoire and refined its ensemble sound, adding Scottish fiddler phenomenon Moynihan to the mix for this show. Keith Murphy began forging a distinctive sound in the world of traditional song at an early age, growing up surrounded by the rich tradition of folk songs, ballads, and dance music of his native Newfoundland. Over the years, and through his travels as a musician, he's incorporated elements of many other traditions, including the repertoire of his adopted home in Vermont. He is a noted instrumentalist and well known for his playing with Nightingale, Childsplay, Boston Revels, Tony Barrand, Hanneke Cassel, Yann Falquet, and his most enduring collaborator - his wife and fiddler, Becky Tracy. He is also the founder and artistic director of the Brattleboro Music Center’s Northern Roots Festival.Formed to support Murphy's most recent solo project “Bright As Amber," The Band Of Amber incorporates bass, drums, and electric guitar over his fingerstyle acoustic guitar and singing of old songs. Anand Nayak (Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem) is a Grammy nominated producer and multi-instrumentalist who crafts beautifully sensitive and atmospheric textures on electric guitar. Richie Barshay who has played with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Natalie Merchant, Bobby McFerrin, and is a member of the Klezmatics, is a drummer of astounding range and musicality. Ty Gibbons is an acclaimed composer for film and TV and a member of the Vermont indie folk band Red Heart the Ticker. As an acoustic bass player, he melds an understanding of traditional folk song with his other wide ranging musical talents. A versatile and inventive 5-string fiddler and vocalist, Jenna Moynihan will open the show with a solo set, and then sit in with The Band of Amber. Born to a well-known Djeli family in Kita, Mali, Yacouba started learning the kora and the oral traditions associated with it from his grandfather at the age of 9. For centuries, Djelis have been the musical storytellers, a position that is inherited through a family bloodline. Highly respected within their communities, they are the keepers of the factual history and the fictional fables of past rulers, nobles, social groups and families. Circling about bassist/composer Mike Rivard and drummer Dean Johnston, each Club d'Elf performance features a different line-up, drawn from a constellation of some of the most creative improvisers from the jazz, DJ, rock &amp; world music scenes of Boston, NYC and beyond. The band's music draws from a startlingly wide spectrum of styles, including jazz, hip hop, electronica, avant garde, prog-rock and dub. Under the tutelage of member Brahim Fribgane (who hails from Casablanca) the band has absorbed Moroccan trance music, which is now an essential part of the mix. Club d'Elf

Artist Statement:Time is a critical element of photography. From exposure to development to printing, each step in the process is defined by time. At each step time is taken to allow the chemical and physical processes to create the final image. I have chosen to have an element of water in each photograph as a way to depict the passing of time to draw attention to change that is often overlooked. I’m trying to narrow the gaze, to focus in on these particulars, on how time changes our view of the environment, because it’s happening incrementally, and we often don’t have the time to notice. But if you pause, as a photograph asks you to do, you can see that the force and power of the water, just like time, offers change.These images are hand made prints using the palladium printing process and are known as palladiotypes. This process dates back to the early days of photography in the 19th century. To create the print, a sheet of cotton rag paper is sensitized by hand coating a mixture of ferric and palladium salts onto its surface. When the coated paper has dried, the paper and a negative is sandwiched in a frame and exposed to ultraviolet light. When the exposure is complete, the print must then be developed to complete the chemical reaction necessary to convert the palladium salts to palladium metal which forms the image. Since this process requires the use of ultraviolet light, enlarging is not possible, and large format negatives must be used. While it is possible to create negatives using digital methods, I only use large format film negatives as a way to stay true to this historical process and to create a deeper connection to my subjects without electronic intervention. About the Artist:Nick Ellison is a mechanical engineer and lives in Putney with his wife and daughter. His love of photography began in childhood. His interest grew into a passion that has led him to experiment with many different forms. Artist Statement:The large format camera is limited in a sense. It takes time to set up the camera, to focus, compose, calculate exposure time, and finally make the exposure. But within that limitation I’ve found room for deep exploration and connection between my choice of equipment, the natural world, and myself. I only have a set number of exposures, sometimes only one or two, forcing me to really look and try to understand what I see. The print itself is precious metal; it will not fade, it will not discolor, so long as the cotton paper base survives so will the image. Each print is unique. No two are exactly alike due to their hand made nature. When viewing each photograph I am brought back to each place I stood. I can feel the cold wind, see the mist from the falling water, hear the rushing torrent or gentile burble.I have chosen to have an element of water in each photograph as a way to depict the passing of time to draw attention to change that is often overlooked. I’m trying to narrow the gaze, to focus in on these particulars, on how time changes our view of the environment, because it’s happening incrementally, and we often don’t have the time to notice. But if you pause, as a photograph asks you to do, you can see that the force and power of the water, just like time, offers change. About the Artist:Nick Ellison is a mechanical engineer and lives in Putney with his wife and daughter. His love of photography began in childhood. His interest grew into a passion that has led him to experiment with many different forms. Over the last 16 years of creating a buzz at festivals and concert halls across the world, they have truly set the standard for fiddle and cello in traditional music. This seemingly unlikely pairing of instruments is the fulfillment of a long-standing musical dream for Fraser. His search eventually led him to find a cellist who could help return the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music, where it stood for hundreds of years before being relegated to the orchestra. Alasdair and Natalie blend a profound understanding of the Scottish tradition with cutting-edge string explorations. In addition to performing, they both have motivated generations of string players through their teaching at fiddle camps across the globe.Fraser has a concert and recording career spanning over 30 years, with a long list of awards, accolades, radio and television credits, and feature performances on top movie soundtracks (Last of the Mohicans, Titanic, etc.). OneBeat begins with an opening residency, when Fellows collaborate to create original material, record new musical ideas, and incubate their projects. OneBeat Fellows then go on tour across a region of the U.S., performing for a wide array of American audiences, collaborating with local musicians, and leading workshops with youth and community organizations. During the month, each OneBeat musician also sets out their plans for the future, further developing projects in their home countries that embody the OneBeat mission of collaboration and engagement.The Bandwagon Summer Series is a family-friendly outdoor cultural performance series running from early May through mid-October. 20 performances ranging from a diverse group of musical styles, circus arts, dance, and theater will take place at ballfields, farms, and parks throughout Windham County. They toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Europe, playing hundreds of clubs, theaters, and festivals. In 2012, Jacob won the National Mandolin Championship in Winfield, Kansas, and two years later, joined the progressive bluegrass jam group Yonder Mountain String Band, releasing three albums and touring with the band until the end of 2019. In 2022, Jacob was called on by world famous banjo player Béla Fleck to tour as part of My Bluegrass Heart. He performed around the country alongside Béla and some of the very best musicians in the genre - Bryan Sutton, Cody Kilby, Justin Moses, Mark Schatz, Michael Cleveland, Stuart Duncan and Billy Contreras. Jacob's main focus now is The Jacob Jolliff Band - an ensemble of virtuosic pickers who play his original instrumentals, and showcase his singing.
