In a world that has faced its share of challenges, they strive to spread joy, hope, peace, and love through our performances.Hans Kruger is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the choir. He is a musician with a unique journey and a heart full of passion! Growing up in Southern Brazil, Hans faced limited opportunities to pursue his musical dreams. It wasn't until his late teens that he discovered his love for singing and the harmonies that touched his soul. His musical flame ignited in college during the late '70s and early '80s, leading him to study conducting with the inspiring Dr. William (Bill) Baerg in Winnipeg.Throughout his musical career, Hans has conducted choirs in Canada and Lisbon, Portugal. For 13 years, he led the Evensong Chamber Singers in Chilliwack, nurturing their voices and creating beautiful harmonies. In early 2023, Hans and Ewa founded Freedom Celebration Singers.Hans has also shared his voice with other renowned choirs, such as the Valley Festival Singers, Fraser Valley Chamber Choir, West Coast Mennonite Chamber Choir (featured on 11 recordings), Jubilate Vocal Ensemble in Vancouver, and The Watchmen Four (a delightful male quartet). Together with Ewa, he is the driving force behind the creation of Freedom Celebration Singers.As a local business owner, Hans approaches music as a cherished hobby, pouring his heart and soul into every note.Ewa Telega is their pianist and Co-Founder. Her piano playing is passionate and captivating. Ewa Telega enchants audiences with vivid performances of the works of Frederic Chopin and others. Originally from Poland, she has graced the stages of her native country, Switzerland, the USA, and Canada.As a regular performer, Ewa has showcased her musical talent with performances of Mozart’s Double Piano Concerto KV 365, the captivating two-piano part of Brahms' German Requiem, and many others.Ewa's extraordinary artistry extends beyond the stage. She had the honour of giving a command performance for the leader of the Polish Solidarity Movement, Lech Wałęsa, in Los Angeles.Dedicated to sharing her knowledge and expertise, Ewa is a collaborative pianist and a teacher. She has guided numerous students to success in festivals, exams, and recitals.

Folkert-Hans Tolsma returns to the stage but this time his performance is for kids, moms and dads, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, the whole family!He will be visiting some elementary schools during the Lynden Music Festival week so many younger children will have seen him and will definitely want to bring the family along to enjoy a time of fun music, laughter and free ice cream together!<hr>Folkert-Hans Tolsma - Born into a musical family in The Netherlands, Folkert-Hans Tolsma grew up listening to the music of Phil Collins, and he started playing trumpet at an early age. He has had a passion for music all of his life, and he is very much looking forward to be returning to the Lynden Music Festival again this year!Folkert-Hans developed his musical style while playing with a Bicycle “Show Band” named Crescendo, then with Mealox, and finally with Lays and The Tailgators. There’s no better way to start your Saturday morning than listening Jazz Standards and enjoying a cup of coffee.<hr>Etsuko Tomeda studied classical and jazz piano and has entertained all ages for all occasions. She received strict classical training during her childhood. After a while of teaching and performing classical music, Etsuko got drawn to jazz and studied jazz improvisation with Dan Lawrence, a composer and a staff pianist at Atlanta’s Ritz Carlton Hotel. Etsuko has performed in several states including Washington and around Japan as a soloist and a member of combos. Etsuko and Doub Pearce have been performing together as a duo in the Lynden area since 2023.

Singer/rhythm guitar player, Jacob Brouwer and drummer/singer Jon Brouwer are brothers and met bassist J Young playing on a local church worship team and lead guitar/singer Cole Kuplent was recruited at the group’s inception to finalize this line up of close friends. The inspiration that keeps the band performing is the thrill of live performance. Dial-Up’s live shows are an opportunity to bring high-energy performances of the music that inspired them with a mission to transport audiences both young and old(‘ish) back to the 90’s. Swing Connection hosts a big band event every summer, Big Band Bonanza, with two other bands: A’Town Big Band and Skagit Swings. The group has a strong following of people who enjoy music of the Big Band era, and several original members are still playing!The band was started nearly 20 years ago by local jazz enthusiasts Bob Sanders and Kelvin Smith under the name Fourth Corner Jazz Band. The Bellingham Senior Center and Bellingham High School provided rehearsal space in those years, and as the band grew, it has since held rehearsals at the First Baptist Church where one of the trombonists, Jeff Flint, is the Pastor. As time has passed, talented local directors have taken the conducting reins: Matt Cole, Bob Storms, and currently Phil Heft. When Don Phillips joined the band, he brought with him a comprehensive library of Big Band music, and he programmed and occasionally conducted the group.The band operates with an active and dedicated Board, which is made up exclusively of band members. The current board includes Phil Heft, David Sattler, Tim Buckley, Bob Hiorns, and Curt Veldhuisen. Julianne and Nathaniel Olson, Baritone and SopranoTerhi Miikki-Broersma, piano<hr>Nathaniel Olson, baritone, is currently based in Lynden and is delighted to perform with the Lynden Music Festival. Career highlights include premiering the role of Tomasz in the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s The Property, solo recitals for the Carnegie Hall Great Singers III Series and the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series, Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti at the Ravinia Festival, as Don Giovanni for the Oklahoma Mozart Festival, a solo WTVP Public Television Special entitled “The American Songbook,” a concert of laments by Monteverdi and Weckmann at Duke University for the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music 2019 Annual Meeting, and solo appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra, and the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic.Nathaniel and his professional vocalist wife Jules have performed and taught together across the world including for a Rhein Riverboat Cruise, on tour with the Far East Broadcasting Company in South Korea, many concerts across Indonesia, and ongoing concerts across the USA. Nathaniel holds degrees from Wheaton College, Indiana University Bloomington, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Central Washington University. Nathaniel is currently a full-time Choir Director at Lynden Christian School, part-time faculty for Lee University Online, and a member of the 208th Army Reserve Band. Apart from teaching and performing, Nathaniel enjoys spending quality time with his beloved Jules and their daughter Freya.<hr>Dr. Julianne Olson, has performed on four continents and nearly 20 countries as a professional singer. After graduating from Mt. Baker High School in 2004, Julianne left Whatcom County to attend Boston Conservatory. Since then, she has worked with such companies as Lyric Opera of Chicago in the world premiere of The Property with Lyric Unlimited, Opera Roanoke, Triad Stage, Hungarian National Theater of Szeged and Pécs in The Crucible, Princeton Festival in Threepenny Opera and concertized with Ashville Lyric Opera, Seattle International Artists Series, with Ravinia in Concert am Rheim/Ravinia in concert in Tuscon, Scottsdale and Palm Springs, at Rose Theater, Lincoln Center NYC, Peoria Symphony as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Denver International Festival of Arts and Technology, and as a vocal soloist on tour throughout South Korea, England, China and Indonesia. Julianne has twice been awarded from the Metropolitan Opera National Council and has performed such roles as Butterfly in Madame Butterfly, Mimi in La Boheme, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Antonia in Tales of Hoffman, Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, the Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd, and Musetta in La Boheme. An active cross over artist, Julianne was the house jazz singer for 4 years at Mambo Italian in NYC.As a professor/voice instructor, Julianne has served on the faculties of Elon University (one of the finest Musical theater programs in the country), Radford University, University of North Carolina Greensboro, Averett University, Lee University and as the Coordinator of Contemporary Voice at Universitas Pelitas Harapan in Indonesia. As a guest clinician, she has taught at Kangnam University in South Korea, throughout the archipelago of Indonesia and central Africa. Formerly, Julianne has held such positions as Teaching Artist at Chicago Opera Theater Opera for All, Midori and Friends NYC, Singer's Forum NYC/ cabaret voice teacher for Don’t Tell Mama’s NYC, Project Leader with Sing for Hope NYC and recently as the Director of Musical Theater at Opera Viva in Verona, Italy. An active scholar and researcher, Julianne recently presented her dissertation at the National Society of Ethnomusicology Conference at Indiana University on a panel entitled, “Sounding Environmental Justice: Music as Eco-activism on Land and at Sea.”Julianne holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts with a Cognate in Vocal Pedagogy from The University of North Carolina in Greensboro. In addition, Dr. Olson also holds voice degrees from Boston Conservatory, New Jersey City University, and Indiana University.Longing for a simpler life after welcoming their miracle child into the world last year, Julianne and her husband Nathaniel returned to Julianne’s “home” after living away for nearly 20 years. Now, Julianne runs a full private home voice studio in Lynden, WA.<hr> Terhi Miikki-Boersma is a multi-talented musician who earned a Master’s Degree in Music at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and worked full-time as a cantor-organist before moving to the United States Chamber music has always been close to her heart, either accompanying on piano, organ or cembalo or playing bassoon. Terhi is also an accomplished and enthusiastic organizer of numerous music events and concerts both in Finland and in the United States. She is the founder of Lynden Music Festival.

The Festival's Opening Night will be a great celebration of our 15 year Festival journey in our community. Our very first opening concert was with the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra October 6th, 2009! All of these years, we have been celebrating a lot of different genres of music with hundreds of musicians from near and far. Tonight Folkert-Hans brings greetings from the Netherlands and&nbsp;Dmitri Matheny Group will bring us to the lovely world of Henri Mancini's music. Lynden Music Festival is humbled and grateful that pianist Judith Widrig and violinist Carolyn Canfield will be amongst our musicians this year.&nbsp;&nbsp; Carolyn Canfield, violin and Judith Widrig, pianoCarolyn Canfield - Heralding from Seattle with studies at the Univ of Wash, Fulbrights to Cologne Hochschule, Germany, and Early Music studies at Tafelmusik in Toronto, Carolyn Canfield enjoys a diverse career as a performer, adjudicator, and teacher/coach for all ages. Recent teaching has included the Sooke Adult Chamber Music Workshop on Vancouver Island, B.C., and upcoming performances include the Bellingham Festival of Music summer season 2024.Violin teachers have included the infamous pied piper from Everett, WA, Eugene Nastri; Denes Zsigmondy (UofW); Max Rostal (Germany); Nathan Milstein (Switzerland); Aaron Rosand (France), and Jeanne Lamond (Toronto, CAN).After a 36-year career with the Vancouver Symphony first violin section, Vancouver Opera, CBC Radio Orchestra, Carmel Bach Festival, CA, and many chamber music sessions, Carolyn moved to New York. Performances included New Haven Symphony Orchestra, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, Pitstop Players, OMNI, and Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. She was on the faculty of Bronx House. Covid hit, so she and her partner drove across the country and are now settled in Ferndale, WA.Carolyn’s passions include teaching, staying fit, and gardening. Her heart-centered work revolves around her <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://ViolinforWellness.org">ViolinforWellness.org</a> program, born in Langley, BC. for a therapeutic riding facility. Ahead of the curve, it has proved to be a precursor of the now universally recognized Music as Medicine. Carolyn also had the recent pleasure of presenting her "Why Does Music Make Me Cry?" talk, tying in her years of creativity and outreach.Judith Widrig - Pianist Judith Widrig is a native of Syracuse, New York, earning piano performance degrees from The Hartt School of Music, The University of Minnesota, and a doctorate in piano from the University of Colorado. She is active in the Northwest as a solo and chamber musician, and she is a founding member of the Bellingham Chamber Players. Judith frequently performs with the faculty from the Western Washington University Music Department, and has performed as soloist with symphony orchestras on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Steinway Artist Sandra Wright Shen has been described as a classical “pianist of the first order”. With her passion, musicality, and inspiration, she aims to move hearts through music. Sandra has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in 14 countries and throughout US, at prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Music Center in DC, the Chicago Cultural Center, Monte Carlo Opera House, Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, Frankfurt Cultural Center in Germany, the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, Taiwan National Concert Hall, Korea Seoul Arts Center, Hong Kong City Hall, Granada Intl Music Festival, Recontres Musicale de Chaon in France, Brevard Music Festival and Masterworks Music Festival. As a guest artist, she has appeared with Charleston Symphony, Hilton Head Symphony, Redlands Symphony, Brevard Festival Sinfonia, New Millennium Orchestra, Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Formosa Philharmonic Orchestra, Taiwan National Symphony, Taipei Symphony and others. Shen is the Artist-In-Residence of the Charleston Symphony for the 2017-18 season. She has played chamber concerts with Vesselin Paraschkevov, former concert master of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and performed on tour in Asia with cellist Nina Kotova.

Son is a unique blend of Spanish guitars and harmony, Afro-Cuban percussion and swing, call-and-response singing, and trumpet improvisation. From the 1930's in Havana to the present moment, Cuban septets like SuperSones have inspired people around the world to dance and celebrate.SuperSones represent this rich musical tradition with a wide range of classic and original songs in the many genres within the Son family: bolero, chachacha, guaracha, and son montuno among others. The group plays songs written by some of the greatest composers of Cuban popular music including Compay Segundo, Miguel Matamoros, Isaac Oviedo, and Arsenio Rodriguez. SuperSones recreate these songs with their own arrangements and improvisations to bring the Son alive in the Pacific Northwest. The group also regularly features original compositions firmly rooted in the Son tradition.&nbsp;Since 2001, SuperSones&nbsp;have performed for a wide range of audiences. The group plays private functions such as parties, weddings, and corporate events. Depending on the unique needs of each occasion, SuperSones play in a range of instrumentations from a trio up to a septet. In Seattle, public performances have included the following venues: The Triple Door, Club Sur, Northwest Folklife Festival, Sea Monster Lounge, Tractor Tavern, Nectar, Seattle Folklore Society, Seattle City Hall, and Seattle Art Museum. In addition, the group has taught workshops and performed at several Seattle-area schools, Whitman College in Walla Walla, and the Seattle World Rhythm Festival. In May of 2006, the SuperSones toured Belgium and Holland.

Etsuko Tomeda, PianoDoub Pearce, Bass Studied classical and jazz piano, Etsuko Tomeda entertains all ages for all events, from concerts to private parties. Etsuko's passion for music started developing from mimicking the Beatles and the Carpenters by ear while studying Mozart &amp; Beethoven during her childhood. She has also performed with chamber music groups and an orchestra as well as jazz combos in Atlanta, GA. Etsuko enjoys striving for creating sounds with different temperature - cool to warm and fun to graceful. Her jazz listener recalled his youth and said " the song you played made me cry and brought back memories I didn't know I had...”.

Classically trained at the Academy of Music in Voronezh, Russia, Sergei Teleshev has won many international accordion competitions. Being a founding member and accordion player of Trio Voronezh, Classic Klezmer Trio, Valinor Quartet and East-West International Project, he collaborates with many internationally recognized artists, ensembles, and orchestras, composing and arranging music, participates in recording projects of different genres. Sergei’s personal YouTube channel (Sergei Teleshev) has close to three hundred music videos with his participation, and the most popular of them are gaining millions of views. Sergei is a jury member at international accordion competitions in Canada, USA, France, Italy, Russia and Ukraine. In 2013, Sergei won the U.S. National V-Accordion Competition. As the champion, Sergei represented the United States at the 7th Roland International V-Accordion Festival, in Rome, Italy, where he received a special prize for most online votes on the festival’s webcast. In July 2017 he won in two categories (Solo Open, and Ensemble) at the International Accordion Competition in Victoria, Canada. In May of 2020, Sergei Teleshev won two 3rd prizes in PIF Castelfidardo World Accordion Competition in Italy (Categories JAZZ Music, and Astor Piazzolla Music Award). In October 2020, Sergei was ranked #2 in the “International Open Trophy” World Accordion Contest in France. From Bach to Rock 'n Roll

The Pearce Family Bluegrass Band was initially formed in 1986, when Traci put out an ad for a bass player in the Little Nickel and Doub responded. They were soon married, and added band members Wil, Molly and Cate who joined the stage as soon as they could hold their instruments and were sufficiently potty-trained. The family began touring together in 2004, playing shows all over the United States. Wil is now based in Nashville, writing, producing, and touring with many different groups including well-known Rend Collective. Molly lives in Lynden, and when she is not chasing her 3 young boys you can occasionally catch her at various venues around town. Cate lives in Rocky Mount, NC,&nbsp;with her two little girls, and brings her husband John to the group as a welcome addition. Cate and John perform regularly as a duo, drawing from their unique and beautiful backgrounds musically. Southern Californian pianist, Jason Stoll, enjoys a multifaceted career as concerto soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, educator, and collaborative artist. Past concert highlights include giving the U.S. premiere of Benjamin Britten’s Rondo Concertante for piano and strings, numerous solo recitals and chamber music throughout his native California, across the United States and internationally, and has appeared with numerous orchestras as soloist including the Santa Monica Symphony, the Loyola Law School Symphony, the MUSE/IQUE Orchestra, the North Charleston Pops, Midland-Odessa Symphony, Victoria Symphony, Miami Music Festival Orchestra, the Westlake Village Symphony, the California State University, Northridge Symphony, the Antelope Valley Symphony, the York Symphony Orchestra, and the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Stoll has also competed internationally and was named a Semi-finalist in the 2015 Dublin International Piano Competition and Finalist in the 2013 American Paderewski Piano Competition.In addition to a busy schedule of performing as a solo artist, Mr. Stoll is also a lover of chamber music. He has been actively involved over the years in a various amount of ensembles including ACE Trio (flute, clarinet, and piano) as well as a multitude of duos, trios, quartets, etc. all with unique instrumentation and repertoire.

Spencer Hoveskeland, Cello and BassSpencer Hoveskeland is a musician and composer with over three decades of experience.&nbsp;Spencer’s work as a performer has been featured in numerous films, TV shows, and commercials, including the Netflix original series “Love is Blind”. His unique ability to create music that perfectly captures the mood and tone of any project has made him a sought-after composer.With a passion for music that began at a young age, Spencer has worked with some of the most respected names in the business, including Grammy-winning producers and renowned musicians.Despite his success, Spencer remains grounded and committed to his craft. He continues to explore new musical styles and techniques, always striving to push the boundaries of what is possible.

Past concert highlights include giving the U.S. premiere of Benjamin Britten’s Rondo Concertante for piano and strings, numerous solo recitals and chamber music throughout his native California, across the United States and internationally, and has appeared with numerous orchestras as soloist including the Santa Monica Symphony, the Loyola Law School Symphony, the MUSE/IQUE Orchestra, the North Charleston Pops, Midland-Odessa Symphony, Victoria Symphony, Miami Music Festival Orchestra, the Westlake Village Symphony, the California State University, Northridge Symphony, the Antelope Valley Symphony, the York Symphony Orchestra, and the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Stoll has also competed internationally and was named a Semi-finalist in the 2015 Dublin International Piano Competition and Finalist in the 2013 American Paderewski Piano Competition.In addition to a busy schedule of performing as a solo artist, Mr. Stoll is also a lover of chamber music. He has been actively involved over the years in a various amount of ensembles including ACE Trio (flute, clarinet, and piano) as well as a multitude of duos, trios, quartets, etc. all with unique instrumentation and repertoire.
