Death Lens is an alternative/punk band from East Los Angeles, CA comprised of Bryan Torres, Matt Silva, Jhon Reyes, and Eduardo Contreras. They have been a punk staple in LA for years playing numerous sold out shows around the city and Souther California, doing a split EP with The Frights and opening for Enjoy, Together Pangea, Cherry Glazerr, Sad Girl and many more. With their 2022 album ‘No Luck’, the band expanded their sound to a new place. Inspired by the turmoil and racial injustice of 2020, Death Lens set out to make an honest album that encapsulates the anxieties and hardships of life, while ultimately conveying a positive message that there is light at the end of the tunnel. They are living proof of this themselves. Growing up as minorities in a place with constant harassment by police and heavy gang violence, their path could have gone another way, but they’ve chosen positivity and strive to be a light for their communities, their fans and each other. In this two day workshop we'll spend the first day at Holland Project learning how to properly construct and stretch canvases from scratch and prepare them for painting. In collaboration with local musician and whiz Brandon Nguyen, we are hosting a workshop going over all the basic concepts of Modular Synth. Participants will learn how to make a simple sequence and afterwards, will even have a chance to show off what we learned at NOISE NIGHT if they want.Noise Night is open to all noise musicians (taking the workshop or not). There are limited slots and each musician will have up to 10 minutes (max) to play. Come make some noise with us! In this workshop, participants will get a crash course introduction to modular synth patching. Our instructor, Brandon Nguyen will cover all the basic concepts like voltage control, voltage controlled oscillators, LFOs, ADSRs, VCAs, etc. Participants will learn what all these things are and how they all work together to make a simple sequence. Everyone will get hands on experience using a nifty modular synth simulator called VCVRack. All experience levels welcome and participants will need to bring a personal laptop to work with. Holland has a few laptops available upon request for those who need one (First come first served basis. Art + Game Camp is a week long day camp happening at the Holland Project July 18th-12th, 2024 that caters specifically to ages 9-13. Campers may sign up for a full day (9AM-4PM) or, if preferred, choose just the arts &amp; crafts portion (AM) or just the games portion (PM). Different art projects will be explored each morning and a variety of contemporary tabletop board games in the afternoon led and curated by our friends at The Glass Die. Participants may also choose the “Dungeons &amp; Dragons” option to learn the role-playing game D&amp;D during game camp instead of other board games. Game camp participants will receive more info after signing up.Please note: Snacks are provided during each camp, however, if staying for a full day please have your campers bring a cold lunch! Inhabiting the fringes of Modesto, California in the toxic haze of the 1980’s, WARM BLOOD is a politically subversive, searing collage of sound, narrative, documentary, and trash B movie meta-narratives, handstitched by filmmaker Rick Charnoski in his debut feature. Red is a driven young runaway who returns to her hometown to track down her wayward father. As she wanders the streets selling stolen drugs to finance her next mission, she reflects on her early teen life through reading a journal that she finds in her old bedroom. Tom, a young drifter, possibly a figment of Red's imagination, continues to reappear in his '73 Duster and scoop her up after she runs away over and over again. There may be an ominous conspiracy about a chemical induced sickness that threatens their entire town. Is this a dream or is this just what a town full of corruption and dishonesty looks like when you leave and come home two years later and two years older? “As an artist in this time of significant upheaval, society seemingly having reached the end of its current iteration, it’s of critical importance to absorb and interpret this process of dissolution - and of the transformation that hopefully follows it” says Aaron Turner, guitarist and vocalist for the expressionistic metal ensemble SUMAC. “While I don’t believe we’re on the brink of collective destruction precisely now, this is clearly a pivotal stage in the story of humankind - and there is something that feels right about this music at this exact and very uncertain moment.” In this case, the music in discussion is May You Be Held, the latest album for the American-Canadian trio. Picking up where the band left off with 2018’s Love in Shadow, SUMAC push further into the extreme polarity of their sound with their latest collection of long-form composition and free-form exploration. Meticulously detailed and complex one moment, rudimentary and repetitive the next, and completely untethered and unscripted at seemingly random intervals—it’s an album that fluctuates between extreme discipline and control on one end and an almost feral energy on the other.SUMAC’s work has always been about transition between different states of being. Our sense of normal, and indeed our sense of life, is now being shaken. We don’t know what is coming next. We are looking for pointers towards the future, as well as things to hold onto in the moment. This is a fundamental aspect of May You Be Held’s larger theme. Musically, it’s about continual unification and divergence—and is imbued with the uncertainty inherent in that cycle. In that uncertainty there is also hope, frustration, madness, and a desire for connection. All this too is part of this moment in our history—everything happening at once, the simultaneous emergence of humanity’s best and worst characteristics. Lyrically, May You Be Held follows the humanistic themes explored on Love in Shadow, partially informed by Turner’s navigation of fatherhood and family life. “It’s clear humans have figured out many ways over the centuries to acclimate to adverse circumstances, and even to thrive in them,” Turner says. “My hope for our family, humanity and future generations, is that we find our way by doing what we have always done—invent, adapt, band together, and ideally, hold each other up through love and kindness.”This compassionate tone stands in stark contrast to the misanthropic and death-obsessed nature of most heavy metal music, and perhaps even seems diametric to the caustic and aggravated tone of May You Be Held. It may make more sense to approach the album as if it were a free jazz record or an abstract noise piece, where the emotional resonance isn’t bound up in melody as much as it is in performance. Here, Turner’s bellows and howls seem less threatening than wounded, primal, and mammalian. On guitar, his subversion of melody and penchant for noise seems less like aural punishment and more like an open horizon for frequencies and timbre. In a traditional metal context, drummer Nick Yacyshyn’s dexterous beats, exhilarating fills, and creative flourishes might seem like the pinnacle of rhythmic ferocity, but on May You Be Held there’s a kind of ecstasy in his performance, a fluidity and ability that conveys both urgency in purpose and joy in execution. Bassist Brian Cook glues it together with a heavy handedness that could be seen as hostile or malicious if it didn’t also provide the clearest path to navigating the band’s thorny arrangements.May You Be Held opens with “A Prayer for Your Path,” a composition culled from improvisational exercises centered on the interplay between Turner’s guitar drones and Yacyshyn’s bowing of a vibraphone. Threaded together with warming bass swells, it serves as the entry point for the album’s increasingly tumultuous and unpredictable strategies. The album’s title track is more in line with SUMAC’s established tactics: fusing heavy riffage, knotty structures, and expressionistic forays into an epic narrative arc that winds and weaves through so many peaks and valleys that it spills across two sides of an LP. The band’s free moments hit their apex with “The Iron Chair,” a fully unscripted spontaneous moment in the studio that sounds both completely uninhibited while also locking into some kind of alien logic. From there SUMAC launches into their second long-form orchestrated composition—the imposing “Consumed.” The track is perhaps their most ambitious work yet, morphing and evolving across multiple recording sessions at different locations over the course of several years until reaching its final form where SUMAC’s troglodyte force slowly ramps it up over its twenty-minute run time to a near panic- inducing frenzy. The album is bookended with a final improvisation exercise, the somber and subdued “Laughter and Silence.”While past SUMAC records have been concentrated efforts churned out in short flurries of activity, May You Be Held is a record that came from seemingly out of nowhere. Pieced together from vestiges of the Love in Shadow session with Kurt Ballou at Robert Lang Studio in Shoreline WA, a session at The Unknown recording studio in Anacortes with Matt Bayles at the engineering helm (where the band’s sophomore album What One Becomes was tracked), and supplementary work at House of Low Culture out on Vashon Island in the Puget Sound, May You Be Held reflects the temporal shifts and protracted scope of its genesis. It’s a record that feels more human than anything else—at times flawed and wounded, at others, triumphant, purposeful, and pensive. The music is by no means a salve or anodyne, but neither is it nihilistic. Rather, its forceful approach and challenging timbres are like a confrontation, a baptism by fire, a therapeutic razing. Ultimately, May You Be Held is a reminder of the life force that binds us together and a clarion call to be an active participant in an evolving world.

Carpool Tunnel is a band that emerged from the San Francisco music scene around 2017 and loves to put on a show. With touring being an integral part of their songwriting and functionality, the four songwriters, Ben Koppenjan (Lead vocals, Rhythm Guitar), Bradley Kearsley (Lead Guitar, Vocals), Michael “Junior” Reed (Drums, Keys, Vocals), and Kalani Faith (Bass, Vocals) released their sophomore record ‘Don’t Let Them Pass You By’ on October 20th, 2023. All four members have uniquely influenced the record with their appreciation of both classic and modern music. Although most songs have been written in a stripped-back environment, such as strumming an acoustic guitar on the porch, when the album was brought to the studio the band found themselves adding a playful sonic landscape to their music.Always All Ages.

He works in ceramic sculpture, performance, and fiber, and has curated exhibitions in Reno and Las Vegas. foamboy is a Portland-based pop duo comprised of producer Wil Bakula and vocalist Katy Ohsiek. Wil and Katy worked together for many years in other projects before creating their debut pop album, My Sober Daydream, in 2020 and releasing it in 2021. My Sober Daydream has launched this duo into a new stage of their careers. Foamboy has graced some of Portland’s favorite stages, including Mississippi Studios, Holocene, and Doug Fir Lounge. foamboy released their sophomore record Eating Me Alive in March 2024. While the new project still has that dreamy and dance-y nature to it, it paints a much darker sonic landscape, as Katy’s lyrics lament the rise and fall of a complicated and crushing relationship. The themes of the album also describe reckoning with the aftermath of public art, discovering queer identity, rejecting heteronormative narratives, surviving grad school, and giving up in a good way. The album contains a diverse offering of songs: the longer disco tracks the group is known for, short dreamy interludes, wavy electronic ballads, and distorted psych-inspired pop tunes. It is very much a reflection of the group working with a full seven-piece band for the last year, and contains a concoction of both electronic and live instruments. While the song aesthetics are varied, Wil took care in crafting the album as one unit, weaving the songs in and out of each other. Selections from Eating Me Alive have played on KCRW and KEXP, placed on Spotify and Apple Music editorial playlists, and led to press coverage from the Portland Mercury and Willamette Week, the latter describing foamboy as one of Portland’s “Best New Bands.” The band is currently playing frequent shows on the west coast and is in the process of recording the next LP. Wand formed in late 2013 in Los Angeles, CA and got right to work playing, writing, and conceptualizing a contrarian path forward–the only viable trail to follow for a rock band that formed in the twenty-teens (and audaciously named itself Wand). The original configuration of the band was Cory Hanson (guitar, vocals), Lee Landey (bass), Evan Burrows (drums) and Daniel Martens (guitar). This was the group that recorded the neuroplastic, dusk-colored Ganglion Reef. Upon hearing it, the suits at GOD? Records demanded the opportunity to release it, and the rest became irrevocable historical fact in 2014. That debut release launched a year of furious activity and near-constant touring, and included the recording and release of both their second and third albums: the strobing sledgehammer Golem (on In the Red), and the psilocybe flicker show 1000 Days (on Drag City). During this time, Daniel left to focus on raising his son, and the remaining three members of Wand regrouped as a trio, with an auxiliary fourth piece for tours. Support TBA.Always All Ages.

Emily is a celebrated action photographer and outdoor enthusiast who specializes in capturing snow sports, biking, and trail running in a very intimate documentary style. We are super excited for her to lead us on a photo adventure through the Donner Tunnels and share tips and tricks to help us hone our photo making skills and discover inspiration in the environment around us.We will meet at Holland Project at 10AM for a quick meet ‘n’ greet and presentation with Emily then we’ll caravan up to Donner to set out on our photo adventure! Participants are welcome to drive themselves or can carpool. Once we arrive at the tunnels we’ll spend and hour or two exploring and photographing the area with Emily as our guide. Any camera you have is suitable for this adventure! That includes camera phones, dSLRs, analog film cameras, point-n-shoot cams, etc. This is a fun opportunity to meet-up and hang out with other photographers from the area, share and bounce ideas off each other, and explore a cool and unique location through the lens of our cameras. Optic Sink is the post-punk project from Natalie Hoffmann (NOTS), Ben Bauermeister (Magic Kids) and Keith Cooper (Jack Oblivian &amp; The Sheiks.) Their debut album was released on&nbsp;Goner Records&nbsp;in 2020, and their second album ‘Glass Blocks’ (recorded at the home studio of Caufield Schnug of Sweeping Promises)&nbsp;was released Oct. 2023 on&nbsp;Feel It Records. Between albums, the band expanded on their electronic meets post-punk sound, adding multi-instrumentalist Keith Cooper on bass and guitar, and bringing Natalie’s no-wave guitar approach back into her synth-based setup. The result is a voyage into dynamic sonic territory, with the band’s wide array of influences—from house to punk and beyond—combining to create something vibrant and unexpected. Years of honing their jagged punk have paid off for Sculpture Club. With sounds like Echo &amp; The Bunnymen meets The Cure, Sculpture Club’s sonic palette has grown. Matched wit inventive songwriting &amp; the addition of acoustic guitars, violins, their chorus-soaked basslines and blown-out leads are a masterful evolution. They speak to the power of community, form &amp; function. Led by Chaz Costello, Sculpture Club has entered its rightful place as one of America's most exciting bands. They have had their share of ups and downs since their formation in 2016. Sculpture Club made a name for themselves as party-punks, pure and simple, throwing the kinds of glitter-coated shows that their hometown of Salt Lake City (Now Dallas) had never seen before, and would not soon forget. While cannon-blasting confetti onto crowds at th climax of a set, Sculpture Club was also crafting an “all-in” kind of rock ‘n’ roll that both distinguished them stylistically from other bands in the scene and paved the way for the project to confidently grow and evolve. Core member Chaz Costello generously applied sparkly driving guitar parts and irresistibly thundering drum beats to the foundation of their sound. 2016’s album A Place to Stand is full of riptide bass lines rippling with the sweeping, crashing urgency of post-punk, while also recalling the glamor of classic goth. On 2021’s Worth, open-hearted melodies lend a tender hue to the songs, making for a Sculpture Club that’s softer around the edges. Even so, their colorful, partying roots are not behind them, but still present in deftly driving guitars that recall glitter on the floor. Meanwhile, the darkly wandering experimentalisms they’ve honed along the way are transformed into a vehicle for Sculpture Club to relax into shimmery melancholy. It’s a deserved —if not momentary—resting posture for a band that’s spent nearly a decade playing the hell out of every stage they’ve chanced to visit. In the time since that release, Sculpture Club has expanded. A new vision for Sculpture Club has been realized—one where the band finds more complexity by diving into something like delicacy. The band has honed their live performance with their ever-changing lineup of players and released a live album &amp; composition book of their art and music. All while opening for the bands like Xiu Xiu, The Ocean Blue, Tamryn, Riki &amp; Soft Kill and continuing to make new music.

Hand Wash Only explores the handmade, homespun, self-fashioned, and co-created practice of contemporary regional fiber artists. Skills and crafts that have been passed down through chosen and actual family lineages make way for a new generation of fiber artists with a common thread: if you can sew it, weave it, felt it, bind it, knit it, quilt it, or more, it’s art. Often most associated with quilts and other functional objects, fiber art is no longer limited by use, and the exhibited works reflect a diverse range of techniques, interests, and materials, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches to sculpture, painting, ceramics, and more. The work on view is influenced by personal histories and family and each artist has chosen additional work from their fiber lineage to display. Surely Tempo consists of Alex Martinez, Raymond Pardo, Paul Florindo, and David Ismodes. The group formed in 2020 releasing their first single “ I don’t talk” in August and later in that same year releasing their debut EP “ Days so Bitter, Yet so sweet” Following that the group has been consistently releasing singles that are recorded&nbsp; and mixed by their producer and audio engineer Bryan Farrell.Tony Jupiter is a dynamic Chicano surf goth band hailing from El Paso, Texas, founded in 2018. At this workshop participants will learn the fundamentals of their sewing machines and essential techniques for functional mending. From troubleshooting common issues to exploring different stitching methods. Participants can bring their own sewing machines from home or holland will provide a limited amount of sewing machines available to borrow during the workshop. Small Crush began in Logan Hammon’s bedroom when she was 13 years old writing songs on her dad’s old guitar and recording covers on Garage Band. In her sophomore year of high school, she found some friends in jazz band class to help fulfill her dream of playing her songs in a full band. Together the band began playing little shows at 924 Gilman and other DIY spaces. In 2018 the band released an EP that caught the attention of a local Bay Area label Asian Man Records and recorded a full length the year after. Since then the band has grown to touring and playing venues she has always admired. Through it all the band has made the joy of playing music and having fun the most important thing.Always All Ages
