Musical Style: Big Band Jazz - A Tribute to Woody Herman

Woody Herman, born Woodrow Charles Herman on May 16, 1913, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was an American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, singer, and big band leader. His father’s love for show business influenced him from an early age, leading him to perform as a singer and tap dancer in vaudeville by age six. Herman began playing the clarinet and saxophone at 12 and joined his first band, the Tom Gerun band, in 1931.

He led several successful bands known as “The Herd,” which were known for their cutting-edge and experimental music. Herman was active in the music scene from the late 1930s until his death on October 29, 1987, in West Hollywood, California. His bands received numerous Grammy nominations, and he won a Grammy for Best Jazz Performance – Large Group in 1963 for “Encore: Woody Herman, 1963.”
