His band Tom Rigney and Flambeau–specializes in blazing Cajun and Zydeco two-steps, low-down Blues, funky New Orleans grooves, Boogie Woogie piano, and heartbreakingly beautiful ballads and waltzes. Much of the repertoire is composed by Rigney, but they mix in some classics from the Cajun/New Orleans songbook. For years we attended our lessons, practiced until the wee hours of the morning, and formed bands with our friends, all the while dreaming of rock stardom. But that was a long time ago….One night in the summer of 1993, we were hanging out after a late rehearsal talking about teaching music. We had each been teaching private lessons for a number of years, and agreed that the biggest problem facing our students was that they didn’t have the opportunity to play with other musicians. We talked about wanting to create a venue where our students could play together – one where we could offer them the kind of practical, hands-on musical advice that we wished we had gotten as younger players, but had to learn the hard way over years of working as professional musicians. What’s more, after a few weeks of practice, our students could even show off their skills at a live concert in front of family and friends.From that inspired conversation, the idea for BandWorks was born. After a few months of planning, we set up shop in a small room at a women’s shelter in Berkeley, where we had to move furniture for 20 minutes every class just to make enough room to play – and load in all of the equipment and pack it up and take it home every class! We started with just six students, whose enthusiasm and rapid progress showed us right away that we were onto something really cool. The first BandWorks concert took place in a tiny room at Jackson St. Studios in Oakland, with a packed house of about 25 people. Our students and their families and friends loved the show. We could hardly wait to do it again….Since then, BandWorks has grown into a substantial community of musicians and teachers all around the San Francisco Bay Area. Our summer camp program now includes classes in Audio Recording, Introduction to Rock Band Instruments, Rock Band, and the Music of… series, and is offered at additional locations during the summer months. We offer after-school programs at several different schools in the Bay Area, and plan to expand our programs to many more communities.…and the philosophy that grew out of itThe idea for BandWorks was born out of a desire to help musicians find other people to play with. But as the program evolved, we realized that we weren’t just connecting musicians with one another to share in the experience of playing in a band ­– we were also teaching values.At the core of the experience of playing in a band are listening and cooperation, and collaboration toward a common goal. At BandWorks we stress the importance of this collaborative process, and the need for communication, respect (for ones’ self and for others) and ownership. Playing in a band means being responsible for your part, investment in the outcome, and not letting your bandmates down. It’s a commitment to trying to sound your best, to your own improvement as well as that of the whole band. And when it works, the rewards are profound.Throughout BandWorks’ evolution, we have remained committed to offering a fun and encouraging environment for musicians to play in a rock band, meet other musicians, develop their skills, and perform live on-stage. We have made it our priority to offer an inclusive and fun program and to build the supportive community of musicians that has become heart of BandWorks. What distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies, western instruments, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan.Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed newideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip.Alash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the OpenWorld Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning,” quipping that after the performance“audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.”Alash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. Each of the members comes from a different ethnical background and brings musical depth and years of experience in playing a broad repertoire of classical, folkloric and contemporary Turkish, Balkan and Romani songs. The sound is a bridge between modern and traditional. They perform regularly at community events, weddings, and shows at various venues. They have been an active supporter of social projects. Through their annual signature fundraising event "Gelecege Sarkilar (Songs for the Future)", they work with non-profit organizations and support underprivileged girls' education in Turkiye. As of 2024, they have sent close to 2,000 girls to school. The ensemble, whose geographical roots range from Jamaica and South America to West Africa and the U.S., began joining together their musical forces and international backgrounds during the early 1970s.Out of such predecessors as Obeah and the Sons of Creation, the Caribbean Allstars were formed and became the founding fathers of Bay Area roots reggae. Although many musicians have come through the band since its founding, it has long been guided by its director, Trinidad-born drummer Hugh “Sweetfoot” Maynard.The Caribbean Allstars not only play Jamaican reggae with a traditional electric bass-drums-guitars-keyboards lineup, but also add steel drums to bring in South Caribbean calypso and soca styles of Trinidad and Tobago, producing rhythms that drive listeners to the dance floor. Over the years the band has performed with an array of talent sitting in, including Taj Mahal, Narada Michael Walden, and Carlos Santana.Santana played on their second album and introduced them as “my favorite band” at the 1987 Bay Area Music Awards (Bammies). A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls "the poster child for intersectionality," Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift "a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides." She is made for these times and, with the release of her new, hope-fueled, love-filled social justice album Changemakers, Matthews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of Matthews, ASCAP VP &amp; Creative Director Eric Philbrook says, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.”Matthews began performing in 2010 but cemented her acclaim at Lincoln Center as the 2017 NewSong Music and Performance Competition grand prize winner. That year she also released two new projects — her album of thoughtful songs on love and life called The Imagineers, and her EP called Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers, which tackles social justice themes. Matthews also won the People’s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. In her TedTalk about difficult conversations called "Sing, Don't Shout — An Alternative Approach" Matthews spoke about being born and raised in a small town in southeastern North Carolina by an A.M.E. preacher, and how she witnessed the power of music from an early age. A Mars Hotel show is always an energetic evening of good vibes, good music, and good community.When it became apparent that Jerry Garcia had played his final show in 1995, Stu Allen began working to keep Garcia’s music, sound, and spirit alive in the concert setting. He regularly works with Phil Lesh and has also played sets with Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann. Allen is perhaps most known for fronting Melvin Seals’ tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band from 2004 to 2011. He received more national acclaim in 2010 when he toured with Dark Star Orchestra. Allen shares the Grateful Dead’s commitment to making each performance a unique event, from preparation to execution. He will perform multiple shows before playing the same song twice, and even then, that song will not be realized in quite the same way.Mars Hotel takes this idea a step further by presenting a new band at each performance. As local string teachers, we(the organizers) noticed that many of our adult students have few opportunities to make music outside of their lessons, and many are searching for an opportunity to play where there would be both a supportive atmosphere and "strength in numbers!"&nbsp;There are other organizations of this nature in the US and abroad, but we are the first to start one in the Bay Area. The RTSO was inspired by the Really Terrible Orchestra, founded by Alexander McCall-Smith and friends in Edinburgh, Scotland.&nbsp; We are loosely affiliated by affinity and personal contacts, but are financially and organizationally independent. We and the other satellite orchestras stay in touch, share stories and trade tips on effective rehearsal and concert techniques.&nbsp;&nbsp;In a typical gathering, players come with instruments and music stands on the last Sunday evening of&nbsp; every month at St. Clement's Episcopal Church in Berkeley CA.&nbsp; We meet at 6:30pm for questions about orchestra skills and warm up, then proceed to review pieces previously played through. After the substantial break with snacks and socializing we explore new material and end at 9pm. Folks are encouraged to join in at any point in the rehearsal schedule that suits them. The musical genres cover everything from the baroque era to 19th, 20th and 21st-c. compositions and arrangements, including pop standards and new works. The mood of our sessions is upbeat, very supportive and somewhat irreverent, with lots of laughter. During the year we intend to have one or two public performance opportunities, TBA. The ensemble, whose geographical roots range from Jamaica and South America to West Africa and the U.S., began joining together their musical forces and international backgrounds during the early 1970s. Out of such predecessors as Obeah and the Sons of Creation, the Caribbean Allstars were formed and became the founding fathers of Bay Area roots reggae. Although many musicians have come through the band since its founding, it has long been guided by its director, Trinidad-born drummer Hugh “Sweetfoot” Maynard. The Caribbean Allstars not only play Jamaican reggae with a traditional electric bass-drums-guitars-keyboards lineup, but also add steel drums to bring in South Caribbean calypso and soca styles of Trinidad and Tobago, producing rhythms that drive listeners to the dance floor. Over the years the band has performed with an array of talent sitting in, including Taj Mahal, Narada Michael Walden, and Carlos Santana. Santana played on their second album and introduced them as “my favorite band” at the 1987 Bay Area Music Awards (Bammies). The Allstars were featured on Ashkenaz’s 30th anniversary CD and have for many years been one of the core bands of the extended Ashkenaz world music and dance community.

A Mars Hotel show is always an energetic evening of good vibes, good music, and good community.When it became apparent that Jerry Garcia had played his final show in 1995, Stu Allen began working to keep Garcia’s music, sound, and spirit alive in the concert setting. He regularly works with Phil Lesh and has also played sets with Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann. Allen is perhaps most known for fronting Melvin Seals’ tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band from 2004 to 2011. He received more national acclaim in 2010 when he toured with Dark Star Orchestra. Allen shares the Grateful Dead’s commitment to making each performance a unique event, from preparation to execution. He will perform multiple shows before playing the same song twice, and even then, that song will not be realized in quite the same way.Mars Hotel takes this idea a step further by presenting a new band at each performance. BPO has a surprising capacity to generate empathy with the public, bringing joy and desire to dance in every corner of the world.In their first year, Balkan Paradise Orchestra won the Projecte Cabal Musical 2015 prize from Taller de Músics de Barcelona, which allowed them to record their first ep and video clip. Later on, they were also awarded by the 1st Prize at Haizetara 2017 and the International Street Music Competition from Amorebieta-Etxano (Euskadi), Sons de la Mediterrània 2017 in Catalonia, which helped them release their first album, K’ataka. Doors at 7:30PMShow at 8:00PMWith Jon Chi, Jeremy Hoenig, JP McLean, and Mike Emerson and special guests.Wildfires, floods, quarantine and isolation, protests, riots, and raising children who are coming into awareness of these issues all influenced Jon Chi as he wrote the words and music to his 3rd solo album, River of Marigolds. “How do you take struggle and adversity and turn that into hope and love?” is a central question on the album, Chi says. The Marin County-based songwriter, guitarist, and producer coalesces disparate styles here that he has explored on prior releases. Chi’s lyrics, at times dark and moody and at others hopeful, meld with a musical blend of spacious Americana and psychedelic soul. Much of the album features Dave Schools (Widespread Panic) on bass along with long-time rhythm collaborators John-Paul McLean and Jeremy Hoenig (Melvin Seals and JGB), Jordan Feinstein and Mike Emerson on keyboards, and pedal steel ace Dave Zirbel. &nbsp;&nbsp;Jon is the former frontman for the band Rainmaker who found their fans among the jamband and world music scene.&nbsp; The band’s second album, Long Slow Fade, reached #2 on the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://jambands.com/">jambands.com</a> radio chart and featured Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart. Chi has gone on to create two solo efforts, Just For Now and Another Rising Sun which were more focused, songwriter-style records. “I love both of those styles, and I think we blended them together really well on (River of Marigolds). I feel like we’re adding a little something new to the conversation.”​While River of Marigolds is undeniably steeped in the challenges of today(“Toss us a tourniquet, send us a sage / We’ve been waiting on the wind to blow the other way”), it ultimately yields perspective and hope in lines like “She’s hanging on the hands of time, but don’t they have their way? / Let love and laughter rule your days” and invites you to “Raise a glass, come sing along / praise the earth that we’re all walking upon”.&nbsp; Chi started with 40 songs and culled them back to the 9 that were most cohesive. &nbsp;"There had to be an emotional thread that ran through the entire album," he says. The second half of the album is connected with seamless segues and there is an inviting mix of atmospheric Americana (“River of Marigolds and “Sweet Surrender”), gritty rock (“Road to Revival”), and driving soul (“Got to Give the Devil His Due” and “Cold Clear Winter”).&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Jon is also an engineer and producer and has collaborated with artists including guitar greats Erenest Ranglin, Robben Ford, and Paul Barerre of Little Feat, songwriting talents Jolie Holland and James Mercer of the Shins, and renowned session players Chris Chaney (Alanis Morisette), John Wesley McVicker Jr. (Sheila E, Usher), among many others. Their newest record is produced by Caleb Klauder (Foghorn Stringband, Caleb Klauder Country Band), and features Nokosee Fields (Western Centuries, Steam Machine) on bass. It is a committed engagement with the histories and futures of old time fiddle music. BigfootFormed in 2010 to compete in the traditional string band contest at Clifftop, they took the name Bigfoot from Rhys Jones’ swollen foot at the time, and they also took first place! The band members are Rhys Jones &amp; Cleek Schrey on fiddles, John Herrmann on banjo, Susie Goehring on guitar and Meredith McIntosh on bass. Everyone but Cleek sings.&nbsp; John Herrmann: Best known as a banjo player, John is also an expert guitarist, bassist and fiddler. He has played with many notable bands such as the Henrie Brothers, Ralph Blizzard, One Eyed Dog, the Wandering Ramblers and Songs from the Mountains. He and his partner Meredith McIntosh have been part of the Midnight Mockingbirds, Ida Red and the Rockinghams. Meredith McIntosh:&nbsp;With a degree in music education and a great love for old-time music, Meredith plays fiddle, guitar, bass, flute and piano. She has performed with Ida Red, the Heartbeats, Balfa Toujours, The Rockinghams, and The New Southern Ramblers (with John Herrmann, Gordy Hinners and Phil Jamison). She lives in Asheville NC where she is a certified massage therapist and teacher of The Alexander Technique. Rhys Jones:&nbsp; Born in Chicago, he began his fiddling in the fertile environment of the Chicago Barn Dance Company. Soon after, his family moved to southern West Virginia where he learnt from the older generation of fiddlers, including Ernie Carpenter, Melvin Wine and Wilson Douglas. Rhys has won both fiddle and band contests at The Appalachian String Band Festival (Clifftop) and has played for concerts, dances, workshops and festivals across the United States and Europe. Cleek Schrey:&nbsp; Cleek Schrey is a fiddler and composer from Virginia, now based in NYC. The journal Sound Post has noted that Cleek “possesses a rare combination of traits: deep respect for traditional music and the people who make it, and an unbounded curiosity about new directions for sound.” Susie Goerhing:&nbsp;has been playing old-time fiddle and guitar and singing Appalachian ballads and Carter Family songs since the late 1970s when she first joined forces with long time musical partners Jeff and Rick Goerhing. This musical trio formed the core of the Red Mules, an old-time string band that performed at festivals, music and dance camps, square dances and social gatherings throughout the 1980s and 90s. Susie has also performed and recorded with Rayna Gellert. The PropagatorsThe Propagators are experts in playing fiddle tunes that make you want to get up and dance! With Michelle Yu on fiddle, Evie Ladin on banjo, Rowan McCallister on guitar, and Keith Terry on Bass, The Propagators bring together four of the Bay Area’s finest old-time musicians. Susan Michaels: Susan Michaels has been calling old-time square dances, family dances, and community dances for more than 35 years, including her hometown “chicken coop” square dance on Vashon Island in Washington. She believes it is her calling in life to teach people how to hold hands in a circle and move to music. Originally from San Felipe, TX (population 868), Cedric made his first appearance at the age of 19 at the Zydeco Jam at The Big Easy in Houston, TX. Two years later, he moved to south Louisiana, immersing himself in French music and language.&nbsp; Cedric has performed French music in 17 countries and on 7 full-length albums with various groups, including the Pine Leaf Boys, Corey Ledet, Les Amis Creole with Ed Poullard and J.B. Adams, and with his own group, Bijou Creole. With an apparently bottomless repertoire of songs at his fingertips, Cedric plays everything from forgotten Creole melodies and obscure Dennis McGee reels to more modern Cajun and Zydeco songs, even occasionally throwing in a bluegrass fiddle tune or an old string band number. He is also a prolific songwriter, writing almost all of his songs on his double row Hohner accordion. Cedric’s songs channel his diverse ancestry (African, French, Native American and Spanish) to create his own brand of sounds. “We don’t want to forget that one of the biggest contributions to our culture, music and heritage was made by the Native Americans. I find that the old Zydeco rhythms sound like a mix of African and Native American ceremonial rhythms. Sept. 19. <h2>Ed Poullard</h2>Ed Poullard is regarded as the most significant Creole fiddler of his generation. Born in Eunice, Louisiana in 1952, the Poullard family relocated to east Texas in search of better work when Ed was still a baby. &nbsp;The Poullard family was rich in musicians on both sides. Ed’s father, John Poullard Sr., three uncles and Ed’s late brother, Danny Poullard, all played accordion and Ed’s grandfather was a fiddler. Ed learned the music by watching his father; his first instruments were drums, guitar and accordion. When he began to play his grandfather’s fiddle, he embarked upon a long apprenticeship with legendary Creole fiddler Canray Fontenot. &nbsp;Ed has played with Jesse Legé, Lawrence Ardoin, Preston Frank, his late brother Danny Poullard, and many others. He has recorded numerous albums, including several on the Arhoolie label. Ed worked as a cabinet builder for many years. Danny Poullard was the first to suggest to Ed that he combine his two interests by building accordions and now there’s a long waiting list to get one of these prized hand-crafted custom instruments! <h2>Thompsonia</h2>Thompsonia combines Eric &amp; Suzy Thompson’s deep devotion to Cajun, old-time, blues and bluegrass with daughter Allegra’s fresh perspective, creating feel-good music that richochets between the rowdy and the sentimental, with an abundance of groove and a bit of a quirky edge. A Mars Hotel show is always an energetic evening of good vibes, good music, and good community.When it became apparent that Jerry Garcia had played his final show in 1995, Stu Allen began working to keep Garcia’s music, sound, and spirit alive in the concert setting. He regularly works with Phil Lesh and has also played sets with Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann. Allen is perhaps most known for fronting Melvin Seals’ tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band from 2004 to 2011. He received more national acclaim in 2010 when he toured with Dark Star Orchestra. Allen shares the Grateful Dead’s commitment to making each performance a unique event, from preparation to execution. He will perform multiple shows before playing the same song twice, and even then, that song will not be realized in quite the same way.Mars Hotel takes this idea a step further by presenting a new band at each performance. Drawing from the rich music scene of the Bay Area, Allen has assembled a broad and ever-rotating group of musicians that makes each concert a once-only experience. One of the best-known African performers to grace our stage, he has appeared in the past few years in numerous settings, contributing his unique spirit, from solo to such world fusions as the World Blues Band, Symphony of Koras, Soul Union, and the Manding Band. Susso was born in Gambia, raised in Mali, and is a singer and kora master. He grew up in a compound of griots, next door to Toumani Diabate. His uncle was Ballake Cissoko. Susso played kora and performed before he was big enough to hold the instrument. He has since gone on to perform with many of Africa’s top stars and American musicians including Taj Mahal.The kora, the 21-stringed harp lute of West Africa, originated in the ancient Kingdom of Mali more than a thousand years ago. Tradition tells that djinns brought it into this world and gave it to the griots: families whose place in the culture was to sing the epics of heroes and relate histories. The griots played kora and sang in court to praise the kings, and in the villages to carry news and to celebrate traditional ceremonies. The music is intricate, elegant, and potent. It is sweet while strong, percussive while lyrical, active while calm. Centuries of complex tradition are heard in it, as are simple truths.

A Bay Area institution, Ashkenaz is a wonderful venue for listening or dancing, with a great dance floor and delicious food and drinks available for sale. Lavay will light up the dance floor with an evening of swing classics, performed by her all-star 8-piece band. One of the first and still the best of the “swing revival” bands. Lavay Smith &amp; Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers remain popular after 25 years of keeping dancers ecstatic. Along with the East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop grooves by the band, Smith swings from sultry torch songs to the grit of the great blues singers. She and the band keep adding new elements to their timeless blues-jazz-swing repertoire, including new songs as well as rotating the hits and lesser-known gems from their four CDs.

In his teenage years started his music adventures in the Ecuadorian skate punk rock scene and formed a punk band called K.O. influenced by 80’s punk bands. At the age of 18 moved to San Francisco, California pursuing a career in the music business as a singer songwriter, producer and audio engineer.In 2009 formed a punk rock band called Alcoholics where he played guitar and lead vocals after the Alcoholics band was over, In 2014 formed part of a ska, punk band called Sick Pigeon where he was the lead singer. At the same time on his way to fulfill his dreams as a musician, he was also training professionally to achieve what is also his passion as a sound engineer and producer, starting from the bottom he got the opportunity to start working at the legendary Hyde Street Studios where he currently works as a audio engineer, Producer.In January 2020, David started his new project ELeNA, lyrically Elena discusses the worlds’ social political and ecological problems, interpersonal relationships issues and love. Elena performs primary reggae music, however experiments and fusions with genres, such as punk, Ska, cumbia, latin jazz and hip hop.
